FOREIGN SAVIOURS IN IN 1944

As Hungary is commemorating , the Embassies of the Holy See, , , Portugal, , and in Hungary have initiated a program to remember the victims of the Holocaust and to honour courageous persons who opposed it and saved the life of Jewish families and individuals.

Among those persons who – often by risking their own life – saved from deportation in Hungary, has honoured 777 people as “Righteous Among The Nations”. They were mostly Hungarian citizens hiding the persecuted in their cellars or providing food. There were also a number of diplomats and other foreign personalities who used their position and influence to rescue Hungarian and foreign Jews, by protecting houses or handing out life-saving documents.

Embaixada de Portugal The program pays special tribute to (Italy); Angelo Portugál Nagykövetség Rotta and Gennaro Verolino (Holy See; Italy); Henryk Sławik (Poland); Sampaio Garrido and Teixeira Branquinho (Portugal); Angel Sanz-Briz (Spain); (Sweden), and (Switzerland) and their foreign and Hungarian helpers.

The two main elements of the program are a series of walks along the historic sites – mainly in the XIII. district of – linked to the rescue-efforts and a series of movie projections.

June 20th, Friday: 19h00: World Premiere of the documentary “Carl Lutz, the forgotten hero” (Switzerland, 2014, 91”) in the Urania Cinema (1088 Budapest, Rákóczi út 21); language: German with Hungarian and English subtitles.

June 21st, Saturday: 17h00: Inauguration of historic walk along historic sites in Budapest linked (1,5h approx.) to foreign saviours of Jews in Hungary during the Holocaust. Language: Hungarian. RSVP required: http://bupap.hu/hu/embermento-diplomatak-budapesten

19h30: Multimedia presentations: “, the first man to inform the world about the Holocaust” and “Museum of History of Polish Jews – a tribute to the common past” in the Polish Institute (1065 Budapest, Nagymező utca 15).

19h00: Premiere of the movie “El Ángel de Budapest” (Spain, 2011; 109”), language: Spanish with English subtitles, followed by the opening of exhibition about Angel Sanz Briz in the Instituto Cervantes (1064 Budapest, Vörösmarty utca 32).

20h30: Projection of the movies: "Henryk Sławik: The Polish Wallenberg" (Poland, 2004; 50”), language: Polish with English or Hungarian subtitles and “Raoul Wallenberg’s War” (Sweden, 2012; 45”), language: English with Hungarian subtitles, in the Polish Institute (1065 Budapest, Nagymező utca 15).

21h00: Projection of the documentary "A Lista de Chorin" (Portugal, 2008; 50”), language Portuguese with English subtitles in the Instituto Cervantes (1064 Budapest, Vörösmarty utca 32).

June 23rd, Monday: 18h00: Projection of the movie “Perlasca” (Italy, 2002; 118”), language: Italian with English subtitles, in the Sala Federico Fellini of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (1088 Budapest, Bródy Sándor utca 8).
