Since the appearance of the first issue of the Journal, in its modest form, in Page 1 February 2009, the Journal‟s webpage has been receiving, on average, 50 hits a week from readers around the world. In the first issue we focused entirely on publishing abridged and edited versions of students‟ work-based projects; however, our aspirations as stated in the Editorial Statement were to do much more. In this issue, I am pleased to say that we have taken the first steps on the long road of fulfilling these aspirations. We have invited a number of notable academics and industry practitioners to help us on this journey by becoming the first members of the Journal‟s advisory Editorial Board, and I am humbled to state that they have all accepted our invitation and readily answered our requests for contributions to the current issue.     Week of September 15, 2014 – Emergency Egress On February 20, 2003, the Station Night Club in Rhode Island showcased the rock band, Great White (with their most famous song, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”). This show included a pyrotechnic extravaganza designed to put the icing on the entertainment cake for the evening. Just seconds into the band's opening song, "Desert Moon," the band’s tour manager ignited flammable acoustic foam on both sides of the drummer's alcove at the back of the stage. The pyrotechnics were gerbs, which are cylindrical devices that produce a controlled spray of sparks. The gerbs were set to spray sparks 15 feet for 15 seconds. However, this distance easily encompassed the ceiling and wall insulation that was comprised of urethane and polyethylene. These materials are highly flammable and yield harmful gases such as carbon monoxide when ignited. Initially the flames were thought to be part of the act, but when smoke began to billow, the audience realized there was danger and the situation was out of control. By this time, the nightclub's fire alarm had been activated, and although there were four possible exits, most people headed for the front door through which they had entered. The ensuing stampede caused people getting crushed as they frantically pushed through the narrow hallway that led to the exit. This resulted in the egress path being blocked as numerous deaths and injuries occurred to both patrons and staff. 462 people were in attendance, even though the club's official licensed capacity was 404. 100 people were killed and about half of the survivors were injured, either from burns, smoke inhalation, or being trampled.

For Great White’s Michael Lardie, nothing could be more true. Lardie joined Great White in 1985. A native of Dayton, Ohio, she and her twin sister Karen T. Borchers (also a photojournalist) took up photography in high school and refined their technique as undergraduates at Bowling Green State University. After receiving her master's degree at the Indiana University School of Journalism in 1981, Borchers worked for three years with the Topeka Capital-Journal before landing in Providence. In addition to covering general news and sports, she took on a number of special assignments and longer-form photoessays over the years in southern New England. She retired in 2015. A rich sampling from a long career in photojournalism, the collection includes photographic negatives and prints along with associated published materials. Centered primarily on her time with the Providence Journal, the collection reflects the breadth of Borchers' assignments, including general news, sports coverage, and longer-form photoessays, in both black and white and color The collection also includes five self-made books: three on long-term photographic projects for the Journal and two career retrospectives. Instinct told him staying on his side would protect his spine and airway.” CHAS NOTES: I heard this guy interviewed on The TODAY SHOW within a day or so after the fire occurred. I immediately recognized the importance of how and why he survived, and began looking for articles about his ordeal. But, couldn’t find one. It wasn’t until January of 2006 (when searching again) that I finally this account. Then, it took me another few months to get it posted (August, 2006). My apologies for the delay. During his TODAY SHOW interview, Mike talked about feeling bodies piling up on top of him. He talked about instinctively knowing that; if he stayed on his back or his stomach beneath the pile of bodies, that he wouldn’t be able to breathe. He instinctively believed that being on his side would keep his “chest” from being compressed, and allow him to continue breathing. He was very close to being absolutely correct – close enough, that his positioning DID saved his life.
