India: Trade, Business and Human Rights Public Forum May 23, 2012 New York City Bar India: Remarks on a Story of Hope and Despair By Jaipat Singh Jain The story of India, as we know it, starts with a river deep in the Himalayas, called Indus. Long before the pyramids of Giza, before Mesopotamia, before the Mayan civilization – almost 10,000 years ago – there stood an enormously well-developed civilization on the banks of that river. We call it the Indus Valley Civilization. At its peak, it comprised of about 5 million people. For most of the modern times, however, the fact of the civilization was unknown to Western scholars. It was merely a subject of Indian religious scriptures, local stories and of myths. Then about a 100 years ago, its ruins were being dismantled to produce debris to lay the modern railways. Some archeologists objected. They found that Mohenjo-Daro, one of the uncovered parts of the Indus valley civilization, showed well-developed cities, with colleges, parks, communal baths, play grounds, language, arts, music, chariots, houses with kitchens, pottery and agriculture. The cities had sophisticated sewage system, with sewers large enough to walk in. All sewers were connected to city-wide drainage system. Each home had a latrine. I mention this because in today’s India, more than half of its people defecate in the open. Each city block had one or more water wells. Again, I mention this because today, almost 250 million Indians have to travel more than a quarter of a mile to get drinking water. -
Official Colours of Chinese Regimes: a Panchronic Philological Study with Historical Accounts of China
TRAMES, 2012, 16(66/61), 3, 237–285 OFFICIAL COLOURS OF CHINESE REGIMES: A PANCHRONIC PHILOLOGICAL STUDY WITH HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF CHINA Jingyi Gao Institute of the Estonian Language, University of Tartu, and Tallinn University Abstract. The paper reports a panchronic philological study on the official colours of Chinese regimes. The historical accounts of the Chinese regimes are introduced. The official colours are summarised with philological references of archaic texts. Remarkably, it has been suggested that the official colours of the most ancient regimes should be the three primitive colours: (1) white-yellow, (2) black-grue yellow, and (3) red-yellow, instead of the simple colours. There were inconsistent historical records on the official colours of the most ancient regimes because the composite colour categories had been split. It has solved the historical problem with the linguistic theory of composite colour categories. Besides, it is concluded how the official colours were determined: At first, the official colour might be naturally determined according to the substance of the ruling population. There might be three groups of people in the Far East. (1) The developed hunter gatherers with livestock preferred the white-yellow colour of milk. (2) The farmers preferred the red-yellow colour of sun and fire. (3) The herders preferred the black-grue-yellow colour of water bodies. Later, after the Han-Chinese consolidation, the official colour could be politically determined according to the main property of the five elements in Sino-metaphysics. The red colour has been predominate in China for many reasons. WHITE JADE RING AND QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST As for the foundation and succession myths of early Chinese dynasties, Allan holds that “Ancient Chinese literature contains few myths in the traditional sense of stories of the supernatural but much history” (Allan, 1981: ix) and “history, as it appears in the major texts from the classical period of early China (fifth-first centuries B.C.),has come to function like myth” (Allan, 1981: 10). While “the problem of myth for Western philosophers is a problem of interpreting the meaning of myths and the phenomenon of myth-making” as Allan remarks, “the problem of myth for the sinologist is one of finding any myths to interpret and of explaining why there are so few.” (Allen, 1991: 19) To decode why white jade enjoys a prominent position in the Chinese culture, the underlying conceptual structure and unique culture genes should be investigated. -
Introduction
INTRODUCTION The wuxia film is the oldest genre in the Chinese cinema that has remained popular to the present day. Yet despite its longevity, its history has barely been told until fairly recently, as if there was some force denying that it ever existed. Indeed, the genre was as good as non-existent in China, its country of birth, for some fifty years, being proscribed over that time, while in Hong Kong, where it flowered, it was gen- erally derided by critics and largely neglected by film historians. In recent years, it has garnered a following not only among fans but serious scholars. David Bordwell, Zhang Zhen, David Desser and Leon Hunt have treated the wuxia film with the crit- ical respect that it deserves, addressing it in the contexts of larger studies of Hong Kong cinema (Bordwell), the Chinese cinema (Zhang), or the generic martial arts action film and the genre known as kung fu (Desser and Hunt).1 In China, Chen Mo and Jia Leilei have published specific histories, their books sharing the same title, ‘A History of the Chinese Wuxia Film’ , both issued in 2005.2 This book also offers a specific history of the wuxia film, the first in the English language to do so. It covers the evolution and expansion of the genre from its beginnings in the early Chinese cinema based in Shanghai to its transposition to the film industries in Hong Kong and Taiwan and its eventual shift back to the Mainland in its present phase of development. Subject and Terminology Before beginning this history, it is necessary first to settle the question ofterminology , in the process of which, the characteristics of the genre will also be outlined. -

Spread of Civilizations in East Asia: Tang & Song Dynasties 500CE-1603CE NOTES Two Golden Ages After the Han dynasty (Wudi, Silk Road) collapsed in 220CE, China remained a divided land for about 400 years. During this period of division, China managed to escape the grim world that Western Europe was experiencing (plague, economic failures, etc.). Farm production in China expanded and technology slowly improved. Buddhism spread, while learning and the arts continued. Even Chinese cities survived despite invaders in the North, as the invaders would often adopt Chinese civilization rather than demolish it. Meanwhile, in the South, various Chinese dynasties rose and fell. THE TANG DYNASTY The first two Tang emperors were father (Li Yuan) and son (Li Shimin), but the son was the main force behind the dynasty. After time, Li Shimin, compelled his aging father to step down and took the throne himself, taking the name Tang Taizong. He was a brilliant general, government reformer, famous historian, and master of the calligraphy brush. He would eventually become the most admired of all Chinese emperors. The Tang Dynasty, under the leadership of Tang Taizong, carried empire building to greater heights, conquering territories deep into Central Asia, as far as present-day Afghanistan. Chinese armies forced neighboring lands of Vietnam, Tibet, and Korea to become tributary states. A tributary state is an independent state that has to acknowledge the supremacy of another state and pay tribute to its ruler. Therefore, while these states remained independent, their rulers had to acknowledge Chinese supremacy and send regular tribute to the Tang emperor. -

Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history. -

The Transcendence of the Arts in China and Beyond is a conference that will bring a wide range of new perspectives on the artistic styles changes of Chinese Arts, resulting from the artistic exchange and mutual interactions with the arts, styles and techniques of other cultures in China itself and beyond its cultural frontiers. Given to the long artistic traditions and the multicultural sediment of Chinese arts it is critical to present a selection of comparative perspectives on the legacy of other artistic traditions in the arts of China, from the Bronze Age to Modern-day, crossing through ceramics, metalwork, paint- ing, sculpture, carving, prints, textiles, drama (theatre, opera, shadow puppetry and cinema), and performing arts (music and dance). Our goals for the conference are to raise awareness of the artistic exchange and mutual influ- ences between the Han Chinese arts and the arts from different cultural backgrounds in China itself, as well as beyond its geographical and cultural boundaries. We also aim to go through the issues on the construction of artistic identity and the balance between permeability and hege- mony, tradition and innovation, convenience and misinterpretation. -
Song Dynasty (960 ‐ 1279)
SONG DYNASTY (960 ‐ 1279) The Song Dynasty was the ruling dynasty in China between 960 and 1279; it succeeded the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period, and was followed by the Yuan Dynasty. It was the first government in world history to issue banknotes or paper money, and the first Chinese government to establish a permanent standing navy. This dynasty also saw the first known use of gunpowder, as well as the first discernment of true north using a compass. The Song Dynasty is divided into two distinct periods: the Northern Song and Southern Song. During the Northern Song (960–1127), the Song capital was in the northern city of Bianjing (now Kaifeng) and the dynasty controlled most of inner China. The Southern Song refers to the period after the Song lost control of northern China to the Jin Dynasty. During this time, the Song court retreated south of the Yangtze River and established their capital at Lin'an (now Hangzhou). Although the Song Dynasty had lost control of the traditional birthplace of Chinese civilization along the Yellow River, the Song economy was not in ruins, as the Southern Song Empire contained some 60 percent of China's population and a majority of the most productive agricultural land. The Southern Song Dynasty considerably bolstered its naval strength to defend its waters and land borders and to conduct maritime missions abroad. To repel the Jin, and later the Mongols, the Song developed revolutionary new military technology augmented by the use of gunpowder. In 1234, the Jin Dynasty was conquered by the Mongols, who took control of northern China, maintaining uneasy relations with the Southern Song. -
