Syllabus for Native American Literature – A Postgraduate Course (Spring 2016) Institute: Shanghai International Studies University, P.R. China Instructor: Prof. Zhang Tingquan Email: [email protected] Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of Native American literature; to brief them on the cultural, religious, philosophical and historical ideas that are particularly relevant to this field of study; and to examine the thematic concerns and artistic values of Native American literature. It will also explore the interaction between American Native and non-Native writings. The works to be read include novels, poetry and drama by Native American writers, along with literary criticism. Studying these works will enable students to interpret Native American literary texts of distinct features written in different eras, to have an overall understanding of the history and trend of Native American literature, and to acquire a methodology for the study of Native American literature. This course aims to help students to interpret and criticize both Native American literature and literature by other ethnic groups from multiple perspectives as well as improving their proficiency in, and awareness of, literary criticism. kheya bag RED BENGAL’S RISE AND FALL he ouster of West Bengal’s Communist government after 34 years in power is no less of a watershed for having been widely predicted. For more than a generation the Party had shaped the culture, economy and society of one of the most Tpopulous provinces in India—91 million strong—and won massive majorities in the state assembly in seven consecutive elections. West Bengal had also provided the bulk of the Communist Party of India– Marxist (cpm) deputies to India’s parliament, the Lok Sabha; in the mid-90s its Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu, had been spoken of as the pos- sible Prime Minister of a centre-left coalition. The cpm’s fall from power also therefore suggests a change in the equation of Indian politics at the national level. But this cannot simply be read as a shift to the right. West Bengal has seen a high degree of popular mobilization against the cpm’s Beijing-style land grabs over the past decade. Though her origins lie in the state’s deeply conservative Congress Party, the challenger Mamata Banerjee based her campaign on an appeal to those dispossessed and alienated by the cpm’s breakneck capitalist-development policies, not least the party’s notoriously brutal treatment of poor peasants at Singur and Nandigram, and was herself accused by the Communists of being soft on the Maoists. The changing of the guard at Writers’ Building, the seat of the state gov- ernment in Calcutta, therefore raises a series of questions. First, why West Bengal? ' ABSTRACT India owes to Lala Har Dayal a great debt of gratitude. What he did intotality to his mother country is yet to be acknowledged properly. The paradox ridden Har Dayal - a moody idealist, intellectual, who felt an almost mystical empathy with the masses in India and America. He kept the National Independence flame burning not only in India but outside too. In 1905 he went to England for Academic pursuits. But after few years he had leave England for his revolutionary activities. He stayed in America and other European countries for 25 years and finally returned to England where he wrote three books. Har Dayal's stature was so great that its very difficult to put him under one mould. He was visionary who all through his life devoted to Boddhi sattava doctrine, rational interpretation of religions and sharing his erudite knowledge for the development of self culture. The proposed thesis seeks to examine the purpose of his returning to intellectual pursuits in England. Simultaneously the thesis also analyses the contemporary relevance of his works which had a common thread of humanism, rationalism and scientific temper. Relevance for his ideas is still alive as it was 50 years ago. He was true a patriotic who dreamed independence for his country. He was pioneer for developing science in laymen and scientific temper among youths. -

India: Trade, Business and Human Rights Public Forum May 23, 2012 New York City Bar India: Remarks on a Story of Hope and Despair By Jaipat Singh Jain The story of India, as we know it, starts with a river deep in the Himalayas, called Indus. Long before the pyramids of Giza, before Mesopotamia, before the Mayan civilization – almost 10,000 years ago – there stood an enormously well-developed civilization on the banks of that river. We call it the Indus Valley Civilization. At its peak, it comprised of about 5 million people. For most of the modern times, however, the fact of the civilization was unknown to Western scholars. It was merely a subject of Indian religious scriptures, local stories and of myths. Then about a 100 years ago, its ruins were being dismantled to produce debris to lay the modern railways. Some archeologists objected. They found that Mohenjo-Daro, one of the uncovered parts of the Indus valley civilization, showed well-developed cities, with colleges, parks, communal baths, play grounds, language, arts, music, chariots, houses with kitchens, pottery and agriculture. The cities had sophisticated sewage system, with sewers large enough to walk in. All sewers were connected to city-wide drainage system. Each home had a latrine. I mention this because in today’s India, more than half of its people defecate in the open. Each city block had one or more water wells. Again, I mention this because today, almost 250 million Indians have to travel more than a quarter of a mile to get drinking water. -

The Keys to British Success in South Asia COLIN WATTERSON “God is on everyone’s side…and in the last analysis he is on the side with plenty of money and large armies” -Jean Anouilh For a period of a period of over one hundred years, the British directly controlled the subcontinent of India. How did a small island nation come on the Edge of the North Atlantic come to dominate a much larger landmass and population located almost 4000 miles away? Historian Sir John Robert Seeley wrote that the British Empire was acquired in “a fit of absence of mind” to show that the Empire was acquired gradually, piece-by-piece. This will paper will try to examine some of the most important reasons which allowed the British to successfully acquire and hold each “piece” of India. This paper will examine the conditions that were present in India before the British arrived—a crumbling central political power, fierce competition from European rivals, and Mughal neglect towards certain portions of Indian society—were important factors in British control. Economic superiority was an also important control used by the British—this paper will emphasize the way trade agreements made between the British and Indians worked to favor the British. Military force was also an important factor but this paper will show that overwhelming British force was not the reason the British military was successful—Britain’s powerful navy, ability to play Indian factions against one another, and its use of native soldiers were keys to military success. Manuscript ‘Where is Bhutan?’: The Production of Bhutan’s Asymmetrical Inbetweenness in Geopolitics Abstract In this paper, I interrogate the exhaustive ‘inbetweenness’ through which Bhutan is understood and located on a map (‘inbetween India and China’), arguing that this naturalizes a contemporary geopolitics with little depth about how this inbetweenness shifted historically over the previous centuries, thereby constructing a timeless, obscure, remote Bhutan which is ‘naturally’ oriented southwards. I provide an account of how Bhutan’s asymmetrical inbetweenness construction is nested in the larger story of the formation and consolidation of imperial British India and its dissolution, and the emergence of post-colonial India as a successor state. I identify and analyze the key economic dynamics of three specific phases (late 18th to mid 19th centuries, mid 19th to early 20th centuries, early 20th century onwards) marked by commercial, production, and security interests, through which this asymmetrical inbetweenness was consolidated.
