Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

You know, the things that people do that make them feel just a little better, even though they know they’re not so good for them. Or maybe its something you don’t want to admit because it’s a tad embarrassing. It might be sleeping until noon on Saturday, then spending the day in your PJ’s, killing a quart of chocolate ice cream in one sitting, or, watching “Dancing with the Stars”. We all have our little secrets. I’ll come clean, for me it’s fudge, and not the kind my grandson makes with my wife at Christmas. For my money, the best fudge comes in Vanilla…... And there ain’t nothing I can do about it…….. Vanilla Fudge; the rock and roll world interpreted into psy- chedelica. You dig, or you don’t. It’s not often that what is in essence a cover band catches anybody’s at- tention, but, there are few cover bands that offer the kind of unique interpretation Vanilla Fudge gave to a pantheon of 1960’s rock and roll music. The Beatles, Donovan, Sonny & Cher, Smokey Robinson, The Im- pressions, The Zombies, and, The Supremes, band members Carmine Appice, Tim Bogert, Vince Martell and Mark Stein covered them all, and more. Little original music is found in their discography. Originally formed by Joey Brennan, Stein, Martell and Bogart, as “The Pigeons”, following the 1966 re- placement of Brennan by Carmine Appice, the band renamed itself “Vanilla Fudge”, and were discov- ered, and subsequently managed by reputed New York mobster Phillip Basile.

    NYMAG.COM THE MAGAZINE DAILY INTELLIGENCER VULTURE THE CUT GRUB STREET NEWS MAY 16, 2017 3:00 PM 50 Years Ago: The Summer of Love Brings BY FRANK MASTROPOLO Pot, Protests and Psychedelic Rock to the East Village Tompkins Square Park (Photo: James Jowers) “As the hour grew late and working people around Tompkins Square Park began turning out the lights on Memorial Day 1967, police asked several hundred music lovers to turn down the volume of a guitar-and- bongo concert in the park,” reported the New York Daily News. “The crowd’s reply … was a barrage of bottles, bricks and fists that left seven officers injured. “And thus began the Summer of Love.” “Suddenly all these freaky people who were hidden away from the world manifested,” remembers Bob Fass of WBAI Radio. “It was as though there can’t be two people like that and then suddenly there were 2,000 people.” St. Marks Place (Photo: James Jowers) April brought an early sign of the change to come. Fass and Emmett Grogan of the Diggers, a community-action group founded in San Francisco, helped organize a Sweep-In. An army of volunteers descended on Third Street with mops and brooms to do what the Department of Sanitation would not. “There was very desultory picking-up of garbage on the Lower East Side,” says Fass. “It had been going on all winter practically. There was garbage and there was snow. Naturally the uptown streets, like Park Avenue, got cleaned up much sooner than the Lower East Side. There was a wrecked Porsche on the corner of the Bowery near the entrance to the Bridge and it was there for months, for some reason, full of leaves.

    Rick Derringer Young guitar great, vocalist and entertainer Rick Derringer was just 17 when his band The McCoys TM recorded the No.1 hit "Hang On Sloopy" in the summer of 1965, knocking "Yesterday" by The Beatles out of the top spot. The McCoys had enjoyed four years of successful touring, when Rick merged his talents with Johnny Winter in 1969 forming Johnny Winter And ( And referring to The McCoys ). Rick was the only producer of all gold and platinum Winter Brothers recordings. In '71 Rick was featured on three records, "Johnny Winter And", "Johnny Winter And-Live" and "Edgar Winter's White Trash". "And" featured the first version of Derringer's "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" which was also released as a single, then selected again for "And - Live". Eventually, the busy Derringer joined Edgar Winter's White Trash full-time and produced the gold LP, "Roadwork". Derringer's solo album, All American Boy was released in '73 with the now already popular "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo ", this time as a 'hit' single. Rick was writer/producer of Johnny Winter's Still Alive and Well album and player/producer of the hit album, They Only Come Out At Night . The latter featured the No. 1, Grammy nominated monster hit, "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride". In 1976 Rick created the Derringer Band. He released four albums and in '83 returned to his solo career with the LP, Good Dirty Fun . Throughout the 70's and 80's the popular Derringer appeared on numerous albums with artists Alice Cooper, Richie Havens, Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan.
