Carmine Appice's rock and roll life - The Maine Edge Remember Me. The result is 'Stick It! The book is co-written with Ian Gittens with a forward written by Rod Stewart. When psychedelic blues band Vanilla Fudge issued their debut album inthey were an immediate smash. The album shot to number six on the Billboard chart and Appice quickly found himself on a rock rollercoaster ride. Girl fans all over you. I had cool clothes, a cool car a Jaguar XKE. The Ludwig drum company asked me to do drum-clinics for them and I refused because I was too much of a pop star laughs. Only a decade removed from his Vanilla Fudge days at that point, Appice says his recall of specific details were still sharp. After handing the cassette stash to his manager to transcribe into some usable form, the project was put on hold after Appice's manager somehow lost eight of the tapes. Timing is everything as any drummer will tell you; Appice believes that the early 80s was not the right time for a salacious rock star tell-all. Now, Drums and Rock n Roll time is right. A sequence in Appice's book has taken on new significance in the wake of the loss of one of music's most revered icons. In the early Carmine Appice: Stick it!: My Life of Sex, a freshly divorced Appice needed a temporary residence and bought into a house in Los Angeles owned by a friend who also happened to manage a young and innovative musician on the rise. It was Prince. He was very timid and very shy, a small guy and it seemed like I intimidated him. I was a loudmouth New Yorker, 6 feet and pounds. Prince's then-manager recently contacted Appice to tell him how Prince really felt about him. Appice recalls a rough night when Prince opened for The Rolling Stones at the Los Angeles Coliseum and in Carmine's words was booed off the stage' by Stones fans who had little patience for sexy cutting-edge funk. He was freaked out and in tears. Me and his manager Carmine Appice: Stick it!: My Life of Sex him through it. When he started getting successful, I couldn't believe it was the same guy. He was outrageous on stage. They invited me to the premiere of 'Purple Rain' and I went backstage. It was a really great time for him. An active participant in the infamous Led Zeppelin 'mud shark' incident, Appice delivers that account in surprisingly vivid detail as he does his hotel-trawling nights as a member of the 'Sex Police' Drums and Rock n Roll Rod Stewart. Of particular interest to musicians will be Appice's explanation of his technique, his friendship with a pre-fame Jimi Hendrix and working with the mercurial but brilliant guitar wizard Jeff Beck. Humble, hilarious and shocking, 'Stick It! None of us could even move. Bangor was our very first gig out of New York. Isn't that wild? The Maine Edge. All rights reserved. Privacy policy. Interview With Legendary Drummer Carmine Appice - XS ROCK Carmine Appice is a legend in the world of rock drummers. Dual drummers playing together throughout the album with guest appearances by performers from bands such as Whitesnake, Bulletboys, Dio, Warrant, W. Great to talk with Carmine Appice: Stick it!: My Life of Sex today. So fill me in on how recording this record came about. So we needed a budget and we got that worked out through Pledgemusic. Our manager put together the Pledgemusic campaign about a year ago Drums and Rock n Roll then we basically took it from there. By the end of January, we actually had the amount of money that we wanted. We had recorded it in by my group King Kobra and we wrote it for Ronnie James Diofor his foundation. I realized that there was no real outlet for getting that song played now. So we revamped it and put Vinny on it and then re-edited it and Carmine Appice: Stick it!: My Life of Sex it and we used that song to get us the record deal. A lot of great rocks songs on there. And we did that specifically so you can hear the two of us playing, doing fills and answering each other. It creates really nice ear candy. He pushes me and then I push him. Vinny said, maybe we should just keep the drum machine when we play it. So we played it a certain way where Vinny did the intro and I did the verse, I did the chorus, he did the next intro and verse, you know. We alternated and we both had specific amount of bars that we played. So, I go dude, I thought we were doing this like the drum machine and he said yeah, but it sounded boring when I did it so I just went off a bit. Now the original vocalist was Mark Freewhich has since undergone a transformation and is now known as Marcie Free. Do you still ever talk to each other anymore? About two or three years ago, I was doing a record deal with a label and we were just getting catalog stuff together. I just wanted to get it out there so the fans had something to watch, because we never really had any live video footage. So Mark Marcie Free says no way! So I said, you know what? Carmine: No, no. When the Frontiers thing came about. I got Paul Shortino. And we put out two of the greatest King Kobra records that I think we ever did. Most bands only have one original member now anyways… laughs. Carmine: Well, I mean… Ozzy was always a good guy until he got drunk and then he Drums and Rock n Roll like out of his mind. After the gigs, him and Sharon would take off in their own bus. I was kind of in charge there with Ozzy. We flew to England on the Concorde together and did the Bark at The Moon video and that was pretty fun. A nice guy. Everything that happened between us, happened with Sharon and not between me and him. The lawsuits and everything that Drums and Rock n Roll. He told me. And when I put King Kobra together, he was the first person to see the full show. I got a great record deal and bought some new vehicles and we were painting them. So there Drums and Rock n Roll had Ozzy up on the ladder putting up paper on the windows. Were they both supportive of you and Vinny playing in Drums and Rock n Roll Carmine: Oh totally, totally. My father used to drive me to gigs because I was too young to drive and then later he drove Vinny to gigs too. They were totally supportive. My mother loved the music. She was always singing to the radio. She was definitely a rock mom for sure. She cooked for the Carmine Appice: Stick it!: My Life of Sex. Carmine: Originally, my cousin was a drummer. So my parents saw that it kept happening so they bought me a drum set. I had the toy drum sets when I was real little, but I used to break those. A day after Christmas it was done, you know. But, then they saw that I was a little serious about it and they brought me a real drum set. A cheap set, and after a few years of playing that and I actually got some gigs with it, they realized that I was really serious. Eventually I bought my own car from the gigs that I played. My cousin Joey was first and then there was me. Carmine: Well, probably the fact that I started a style of drumming that is still going on and a drum book that has influenced a lot of people around the world. It also could be that I co-wrote a number one hit with Rod Stewart. Carmine: No. Unless I join something already established and well known. I actually do that on the side now. I have a lot of real estate ventures going. Is there anything out there that you like? This country was originally brought up listening to rock music on the radio and now everything is on the internet. If you want to play in a club they expect them to go out and sell the tickets. Give me a break! Carmine: Well, I always thank the fans for the support over the years. I hope they really like the Sinister album that me and Vinny did. Buy the Drum Wars Book Here.
