Out with the Bad Air In With the Good Air

ndoor air pollution is a serious concern in Itoday’s workplaces. Buildings have been constructed airtight to conserve energy. But this often results in poor ventilation, allowing pollutants to accumulate indoors.

Poor indoor air quality has been related to a variety of symptoms such as:

• a nagging cough • persistent headache • mysterious rashes • dif culty concentrating • frequent illnesses, allergies and others.

Many times the causes and the symptoms of indoor air quality problems are vague. In other cases there are de nite links between speci c illnesses and certain biological or chemical pollutants.

These are some common sources of indoor air pollution:

• By-products of fuel combustion such as carbon monoxide. This can be emitted by a poorly vented heating system, or it can come in from a parking garage or loading area, for example. • Chemical emissions from building mate- rials and furniture.
