    Exploring human experience in the North research arƟ cle “Indigenizing” the Bush Pilot in CBC’s ArcƟ c Air Renée Hulan Saint Mary’s University, Halifax Abstract When the Canadian BroadcasƟ ng CorporaƟ on (CBC) cut original programming in 2014, it cancelled the drama that had earned the network’s highest raƟ ngs in over a decade. Arc c Air, based on Omni Films’ reality TV show Buff alo Air, created a diverse cast of characters around a Dene bush pilot and airline co-owner played by Adam Beach. Despite its cancellaƟ on, episodes can sƟ ll be viewed on the CBC website, and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has conƟ nued broadcasƟ ng the popular show. Through a content analysis of Arc c Air and its associated paratext, read in relaƟ on to the stock Canadian literary fi gure of the heroic bush pilot, this arƟ cle argues that when viewed on the CBC, the program visually “Indigenizes” the bush pilot character, but suggests only one way forward for Indigenous people. On the “naƟ onal broadcaster,” the imagined urban, mulƟ cultural North of Arc c Air—in which Indigenous people are one cultural group among others parƟ cipaƟ ng in commercial ventures—serves to normalize resource development and extracƟ on. In the West, the wide-open spaces facilitated many of these sites, and a sophisticated network of airfields sprang up across the prairies almost overnight. The substantial and enduring impact of the BCATP's airfields and schools in the Canadian West is curiously overlooked by historians, who (for the most part) often focus on the Plan's overall operation at the expense of its lasting influence. The construction of the BCATP sites prompted extensive modernisation of the existing infrastructure in many of the small communities selected for schools. Moreover, the vast sums of money poured into the region and the tens of thousands of Commonwealth airmen who came to train at the airfields had a significant and long-term cultural and economic impact on the region. Along with improved infrastructure, the BCATP brought a new cosmopolitanism and a strong regional affinity for the Air Force. More importantly, the Plan influenced the perceptions and perceived roles of women in the prairies and has had an enduring effect on the Canadian women's movement. In the postwar years, the demographics of the prairies shifted as thousands of BCATP alumni returned to take-up residence in the region they had trained in, while at the same time Canadian war brides departed to be with their new husbands abroad.

Abstract To inform the development of a Comprehensive Military Family Plan, Military Family Services and Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services conducted a research study, “Understanding the Needs and Processes of Canadian Armed Forces Families during Relocations”. This research focused on better understanding: - The number of moves families experienced and to what locations; - The financial impact of moves; - How families made decisions with respect to where to live; - What relocation tasks are most important and most time-consuming; - Where they sought resources and support; - What unique challenges are associated with Imposed Restrictions; - Non-military spousal employment considerations; and - Impacts on the intimate partner relationship. Results revealed that for most military families the posting instruction confirming the need to geographically relocate comes with feelings of happiness and excitement. A smaller proportion respond to the posting instruction with fear, apprehension, anxiety or sadness.
