Nominee Biographies: 2019 Athlete of the Year

Female - Margaret Davis Award Artistic Swimmer Catherine Barrett was a member of Team Canada’s Artistic Swimming team that won a gold medal at the 2019 Pan Am Games. She and her team then finished in both fourth and seventh place at the FINA World Championship in South Korea, and finished first overall in FINA World Series points. Catherine has been named to Team Canada and will compete in the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Toyko.

Runner Kate Bazeley set a new NL marathon record twice in 2019. She was the fastest NL runner and third Canadian at the Houston Marathon in a time of 2:39:54. At the Canadian Marathon Championship and Olympic Trials in , she finished in a time of 2:36:35, which was the top NL runner and fourth overall. Kate was ranked in the top 10 for female runners in Canada.

Hockey player Maggie Connors was a member of Team Canada’s Development team that competed in August against rival USA in a 3-game exhibition series. As a member of the Princeton Tigers in NCAA Division 1 hockey, Maggie was named to the first Team All-Star Ivey League and the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s second Team All-Star and All-Rookie teams.

Male – Tom “Dynamite” Dunn Award Hockey player Tyler Boland was a member of the University of New Brunswick’s hockey team that won University Sport’s National Championship in Lethbridge, Alberta. His second seeded Varsity Reds team defeated top seeded University of Alberta 4-2. In the Atlantic University Sport hockey conference, Tyler finished fourth in both regular season and playoff scoring. Para Hockey player Liam Hickey was a returning member of Team Canada's Para Hockey team. At the IPC World Para Hockey Championship in the Czech Republic, his team won a silver medal, losing 3-2 in overtime to Team USA. His Team Canada also claimed a silver medal at the Canadian Tire Para Hockey Cup played in Paradise, NL, losing 2-1 to archrival Team USA. Hockey player Alex Newhook played with Victoria Grizzlies in the Junior A League and was named the League’s MVP and Top Scorer. He also played for both Team Canada at the U18 IIHF World Championship in Sweden and for Boston College in NCAA Division 1. In June, Alex was drafted in the NHL’s first round,16th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche.

Team of the Year - City of St. John’s Molson Coors Canada The Atlantic Rock Under-19 rugby team competed at the 2019 Canadian U19 Rugby Championship held in St. John’s at the Swilers Complex. The team went 2-1 in round robin play, defeating Quebec and the Prairies while losing to . However, the Rock would face the again in the gold medal match and would prevail by a score of 21-5, claiming the Under-19 National title. The DC Galway Hitmen competed at the 2019 Canadian Fastpitch Championship held in Grand Prairie, Alberta. The team went 6-0 in round robin play and lost the next game against Hill United Chiefs, and the Hitmen would go on to win the next three elimination games and defeat the BC Sooke Loggers 10-7 in the gold medal game to claim the National title. The NL Blackhorse men’s ball hockey team competed at the 2019 Canadian Ball Hockey Championship help at the Glacier in Mt. Pearl. The team, which also consisted of the Growlers Zack O’Brien and Marcus Power, went 4-0 in round robin play. In the gold medal match, NL Blackhorse lost a close 2-1 game to the New Tecumseth Xtreme and claimed the silver medal.
