For west route to Parkachik (via Panikar), turn right just before bridge, staying on the true left of Suru River. 0.4km before the bridge is a signpost to “Guesthouse Suru Valley”. 0.8km after the bridge the “Guesthouse Nun View” signpost points into a field on the left. 75.4 km from Kargil fork East and west route join. 7.7 km from Parkachik Very stony road surface on an uphill. 78.8 km from Kargil start downhill Easy ride down to Parkachik. 4.3 km from Parkachik 80.3 km from Kargil fork Left goes to Upper Parkachik and the Alpine Hut. The service- 0.0 km from Parkachik oriented caretaker can make tea, dinner and breakfast and may also offer to guide you to Parkachik Pass (be aware that he will expect an outrageous ‘donation’). Opposite the turnoff to the Alpine Hut there are good camping sites on the valley floor. SIDE TRIP: HIKE FROM PARKACHIK ALPINE HUT (3600m) TO PARKACHIK PASS (3980m) From the Alpine Hut you can see a trail zigzagging up the opposite slope (to the NW) apparently going towards the pass. This is not the hiking route to the pass. From the Alpine Hut walk the few hundred metres back down to the main road through Upper Parkachik and cross the road to find a construction road (leading to an irrigation channel on your far right, to the N) going up the slope. 100m before the last hairpin a good animal path / hiking trail climbs up to below some cliffs, passing the cliffs on the left. The trail reaches the ridge on its lowest point, marked by a large pile of light-coloured rock and various cairns. This hike is the last part of hike #1 on the Olizane Map and is described in the Olizane Guidebook. PARKACHIK (3600m) TO RANGDUM (4000m). 38km 0.0 km from Parkachik 3600m Parkachik Alpine Hut Parkachik has a few very basic general stores, which will open if you ask around. 38.4 km from Rangdum From the Alpine Hut the dirt road runs down to the main road Kargil-Padum. 3.0 km from Parkachik 3570m junction Upper and Here the dirt road joins the main road Kargil-Padum (note the signpost “Alpine Hut 1km”, 3km away from the 35.4 km from Rangdum Lower Parkachik roads Alpine Hut). Turn left towards Padum. Basic general store in building with green window posts just past the stupa on the left, if you can find the shopkeeper. RANGDUM (4000m) TO PADUM (3580m) . 112km 0.0 km from Rangdum 4000m Rangdum Follow the main road out of Rangdum towards the east. 111.6 km from Padum 3.1 km from Rangdum 4000m fork Left is the main road which climbs above the valley floor to cross a side stream from the north over a bridge. 108.5 km from Padum Right is flatter and shorter but has some shallow (in Sep) stream crossings, possibly impassable if more meltwater flows down. Kilometres presented in this table are based on the right fork. 5.9 km from Rangdum 4000m junction The right (low) and left (high) route join just before Rangdum Monastery. 105.7 km from Padum 6.2 km from Rangdum Rangdum Gompa The Monastery is on the hill with the main road passing below. Men may be able to sleep in the monastery. 105.4 km from Padum Register your passport at the police check post. 9.2 km from Rangdum 4010m turnoff to Tashi Village on a slope on the left. 102.4 km from Padum Tongday 16.8 km from Rangdum stone building Intact deserted building with one room suitable for overnight stay.
