For twenty years, he worked quietly and effectively as a teacher and principal in Sauges, an isolated village on a barren plateau in southern France. At his beatification, Pope Pius XII stressed that Benilde’s sanctification was attained by enduring “the terrible daily grind” and by “doing common things in an uncommon way.” As a young Brother, I remember listening to historian Br. Clair Battersby, FSC talk to us about St. Benilde. “There’s nothing to say” was repeated several times throughout his talk. Benilde had lived an ordinary life, but approached it with extraordinary faith and zeal. Over the years, Christian Brothers High School has been blessed with many teachers who have endured the “daily grind” of preparing classwork, correcting homework, papers and tests, coaching athletes, directing plays and concerts, accompanying students on field trips, and spending extra hours leading a variety of co-curricular activities.

GIVE BACK HOME CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2016 • June 30, 2017 1 FROM THE PRESIDENT 2 GIVE BACK HOME - CAMPAIGN FOR CBHS 3 GIFT ACTIVITY SUMMARY OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT 4 2017–2018 BOARD MEMBERS 5 ANNUAL FUND GOAL 6 ANNUAL FUND TIMELINE 7 ANNUAL FUND SUMMARY, HISTORY 8 ANNUAL FUND - PARENTS 9 ANNUAL FUND - ALUMNI 10 ALUMNI PARTICIPATION 18 PARENT PARTICIPATION 21 CBHS COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION 25 HONOR ROLL OF GIVING 38 LEGACY SOCIETY 40 ENDOWMENTS 43 ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS 44 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN GIVERS 46 MATCHING GIFTS GIFTS IN KIND 47 DESIGNATED GIFTS 50 CONSECUTIVE GIVING 55 HONORARIUMS AND MEMORIALS 64 EVENT SPONSORS Dear Friends, The sidewalk in front of the school is part of the original construction of the Walnut Grove Road campus from 1965. Over the years, it is slowly chipping away as a result of cars parking against it, weather, and the normal student traffic heading in and out of the buildings. For 15 years, I have annually found an excuse not to replace it. Parking lot resurfacing, renovations, and upcoming construction have been the reasons to not waste money on a “short-term” project. With the launch of our Give Back Home Campaign for Christian Brothers High School, we look to position CBHS and the Brothers to serve Memphis, deliver on our Lasallian mission and to remain a leader in a competitive private school landscape for years to come. This campaign is providing for academic programs and resources, new and updated facilities and resources to be shared by current and future students. With the completion of the first and silent phase of our Give Back Home Campaign, we saw the renovation to Heffernan Hall and our Brothers Residence, the construction of McEniry Hall to serve our STEMM program, and the capstone of the first phase in the Brothers Development Center that provides a first-class facility for our student- athletes.

BA ritgerð Japanskt Mál og menning The Change of tides: The advent of non-nationals in Sumo Henry Fannar Clemmensen Leiðbeinandi Gunnella Þorgeirsdóttir September 2019 Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Japanskt mál og menning The Change of Tides: The advent of non-nationals in Sumo Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Henry Fannar Clemmensen Kt.: 260294-3429 Leiðbeinandi: Gunnella Þorgeirsdóttir September 2019 1 Abstract Non-Japanese sumo wrestlers are common today, but that has not always been the case. For over a thousand years sumo tournaments were exclusively held by Japanese men, and up until the 1960s foreigners were almost unheard of in the professional sumo scene. As the world’s modernization and internationalization accelerated so did foreign interest in the National sport of sumo. Today the sport has spread to over 87 countries which have joined the International Sumo Federation. With an interest in professional sumo in Japan at an all-time low and with fewer wrestlers applying to stables than ever before, viewers of tournaments and media coverage of events has been decreasing, which is closely followed by western originated sports having overtaken sumo in popularity e.g. soccer and baseball. Yet the interest in sumo on an international scale has increased considerably. In which way has this rising internationalization affected the sumo world and the professional sumo world and how is it reflected in modern Japanese society, in what way did the wrestlers coming from overseas experience the sumo culture compared to how it is today? Today the sumo scene is largely dominated by Mongolian wrestlers, how did this come to pass and how has the society of Japan reacted to these changes.

  • 2020–21 Commencement Program
Commencement UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER MAY 6, 2021 One Hundred Forty-Fifth Year of the University NORLIN CHARGE TO THE GRADUATES The first commencement at the University of Colorado was held for six graduates on June 8, 1882, in the chapel of Old Main. It was not until 40 years later, on September 4, 1922, that the first summer commencement was held. Since the first commencement in 1882, the University of Colorado Boulder has awarded more than 350,000 degrees. The traditional Norlin Charge to the graduates was first read by President George Norlin to the June 1935 graduating class. You are now certified to the world at large as alumni of the university. She is your kindly mother and you her cherished sons and daughters. This exercise denotes not your severance from her, but your union with her. Commencement does not mean, as many wrongly think, the breaking of ties and the beginning of life apart. Rather it marks your initiation in the fullest sense into the fellowship of the university, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, as promoters of her spirit. The university is not the campus, not the buildings on campus, not the faculties, not the students of any one time—not one of these or all of them. The university consists of all who come into and go forth from her halls, who are touched by her influence, and who carry on her spirit. Wherever you go, the university goes with you. Wherever you are at work, there is the university at work.
