Picture a classroom full of wide- eyed 4th graders, entering a large inflatable dome set up in their school’s gymnasium. Walking through the door of the dome, they sit in the dark in $2 Day Meet a Scientist anticipation. They tour constellations, galaxies, nebulas, and the Moon, 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 discuss the possibility of humans on Mars, and learn to navigate by the stars. In 2017, OMSI worked with partners to bring a Star Party to Cooper Mountain Nature Park. More than 80 people attended, many of whom had never participated in an OMSI program or had $2 Day Meet a Scientist an opportunity to observe the night sky through telescopes. Last April, we teamed up with AKQA to take the Center for Innovation prototypes into the community. For a 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Design Week Portland event, young designers joined a “top secret” agency to participate in a full day of design challenges. 10 to 14 year-olds created solutions that helped undercover Meet a Scientist field scientists set up camp on a $2 Day OMSI 2018 GALA frozen lake in Siberia, and harvest a mineral capable of generating clean 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 energy. This workshop captured the imagination of the recruits, who worked collaboratively to design, make, and test sustainable solutions to real-world problems. In partnership with Autodesk, ChickTech, FIRST Robotics, and St. Mary’s Academy, we launched the Girls Tech Training program to prepare

30 high school students for exclusive $2 Day Meet a Scientist summer internships at Autodesk. During four weekends of collaborative 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 learning, girls became proficient at Agile Development, C#, and JAVA in intense, fun, and supportive trainings. August 1 2 3 4 As part of our planned expansion of Early Childhood Experiences, we are testing Play Lab Adventures to learn about how and why children ask questions or tell stories using The Bloopodome, a one-of-a-kind art installation created by a local artist. 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 The Bloops were an open-ended, whimsical experience for children and their families to practice and build creativity and divergent thinking skills. Based on research conducted Meet a Scientist by Dr. Erik Nilsen of Lewis and Clark $2 Day New Moon College, these autonomous robots inspired children to ask questions, 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 conduct experiments, and test the world around them. OMSI staff took the opportunity to refine our strategies for communicating current early brain development research to parents.

December 1 Beyond the 37 counties of Oregon, OMSI Outreach is invited to five other states, packing up the best OMSI has to offer and taking it on the road to schools, community fairs, and libraries.

Last March, we took to the air, traveling to Bethel, Alaska, to present 3 days of 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 OMSI programming to Alaska’s second largest rural school district, which covers roughly 22,000 square miles of roadless tundra along the coast of the Bering Sea.
