    INS Distinguished Career Award Atlanta Alexandre Castro-Caldas Alexandre Castro-Caldas has had a prolific scientific career, and has made important contributions in several areas of investigation in the areas of Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychology including Parkinson ’s Disease, illiteracy, and the effects of dental amalgam. He has published nearly 200 papers and book chapters. He has had a major leadership role within INS as well as other national and international organizations. Dr. Castro-Caldas was a member of the INS Board of Governors from 1984-1986; organizer of the 1983 meeting in Lisbon and the 1993 mid-year meeting in Madeira, and was elected president of INS from 2001-2002. Kuhl (University of Washington, Seattle, USA) for her work that played a major role in the understanding of language acquisition and the neural bases of language. Infants are born with innate abilities to easily identify every sound of every language, however, by the end of the first year of life, infants show a perceptual narrowing of their language skills. Their ability to discern differences in the sounds that make up words in the world’s languages shrinks. Nonnative sounds are no longer differentiated. This developmental transition is caused by two interacting factors: the child’s computational skills and their social brains. Computational skills allow rapid statistical learning and social interaction is necessary for this computational learning process to occur. Neuroimaging using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) may help explain the neuroplasticity of the child’s mind versus the more expert (but less open) mind of the adult, and account for the “critical period” for language. She also studied the early development of the brain of bilingual children. By 10 to 12 months bilingual infants do not show the perceptual narrowing of the monolingual children. This is another piece of evidence that experiences shape the brain.

    OBITUARY Edith Kaplan (1924–2009) guage disorders in two separate fields of clinical practice: speech pathology and neuropsychology. Many scholars view the time that Edith worked at the Boston VA, from 1956 to 1985, as the golden years of neuro- psychology. There was an uncanny coming together of brilliant minds from the fields of neuropsychology, behavioral neurology, cognitive science, and speech pathology, all working together on “7D,” the famous neurology ward on the 7th floor of the Boston VA. In addition to Kaplan and Goodglass, the multidisciplinary team included Norman Geschwind, Frank Benson, Nelson But- ters, Laird Cermak, Howard Gardner, Kenneth Heilman, Michael Alexander, Nancy Helm-Estabrooks, Margaret Naeser, Marlene Oscar-Berman, Donald Stuss, and Edgar Zurif. The convergence of these brilliant clinician–scientists, integrating their unique con- tributions in the service of a common goal, led to some of the most important early discoveries in the study of mind–brain relationships. An example of the exciting breakthroughs that were occur- ring on 7D at that time is illustrated by what happened after Edith, with her legendary clinical acumen, first discovered the patient who could perform practic (symbolic) movements (e.g., pretend to flip a coin, write meaningful words, type meaningful words) with his right hand but not with his left hand, all the while showing normal motor skills in his left hand. Following several months of intense scrutiny, testing, and retesting by Edith, this Edith Kaplan, widely regarded as the mother of clinical case continued to baffle the entire neurology and neuropsychol- neuropsychology, passed away on September 3, 2009, at ogy staff at the Boston VA until one day the chairman of the the age of 85.

His later years at the Boy’s High School in Brooklyn were instead recognized as the most profound educational experience of his life [2]. He loved literature and Latin, was attracted by mathematics and nicknamed the ‘head’ [4]. Geschwind had the credits to enroll in Columbia College and City College, but his Latin teacher convinced him to enter Harvard University on a Pulitzer Scholarship [2]. During his first two years in Boston, Geschwind’s interests turned towards medicine, but his application to Harvard Medical School was turned down. In 1944 he was drafted, and after serving for 2 years he returned to Harvard University, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree, magna cum laude [10]. Geschwind then began to study anthropology and psychology, partly through amazement by the ability of soldiers in battle to forget their own safety and attack when they were asked to [4]. His interest in psychology soon resulted in a fascination with psychiatry, and he applied again, this time successfully, to Harvard Medical School. Arbib University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA Background: The Mirror System Hypothesis offers the mirror system for grasping (i.e., neural mechanisms active for both execution and observation of grasping) as a neural ‘‘missing link’’ between the brains of our non-human ancestors of 20 million years ago and the modern human language-ready brain, stressing the importance of manual gesture in the evolution of mechanisms supporting language. Aims: To assess the view that neural mechanisms for both praxis and language share an evolutionary relationship to the ancestral mirror system for grasping. Main Contribution: The praxis system receives a new analysis based on the attempt to link human praxis to computational models of execution and observation of grasping in the macaque as well as the analysis of parallels between language and praxis. Conclusions: The conceptual analysis presented here may prove insightful for clinicians seeking to relate and differentiate aphasia and apraxia. Since humans can learn language and monkeys and chimpanzees cannot, we seek brain regions that are homologous across these species (i.e., there is evidence for a shared ancestry) so that we may infer from analysis of both their similarities and differences what might have been the brain architecture of our common ancestor, and what may have changed along our varied evolutionary paths. The present discussion is rooted in the homology between human Broca’s area, traditionally thought of as a speech area, and premotor area F5 of the macaque brain (Rizzolatti & Arbib, 1998).
