Edward Saunders was the first person to be buried in the cemetery, this occurring on 27 Nov 1861.

The Bath Chronicle of Thu 5 Dec 1861 reported the theft by three millers of sacks from the Town Mills. This has “The case is made more scandalous by the fact that the prisoners all attended the funeral of their late master on Wednesday, and each wore a new suit of clothes, received by his generosity. Mr. Saunders we understand, also left a handsome sum in the hands of his brother, for distribution amongst his workmen.” The same edition of the newspaper reported that Edward Saunders had left £100 towards the liquidation of the debt on Percy Chapel.
