Kunstgeschichte. THE IMAGE OF A QUEEN: THE REPRESENTATION OF CATHERINE DE’ MEDICI AS PENELOPE IN THE GALERIE D’ULYSSE by ELIZABETH LEHMAN MILLER (Under the Direction of Shelley Zuraw) ABSTRACT This study explores the patronage and significance of the five sixteenth-century fresco scenes illustrating the reunion of Ulysses and Penelope designed by Francesco Primaticcio in the no longer extant Galerie d’Ulysse at Fontainebleau. Correlations are drawn between the imagery represented in the frescoes and two other works of art from Primaticcio’s oeuvre: the tomb of King Henri II and Queen Catherine de’ Medici of France and a painting titled Ulysses and Penelope in the Toledo Museum of Art. Also examined in relation to the frescoes are Catherine de’ Medici’s efforts to create a positive public image of herself as Regent of France following the death of Henri II. It is argued that Homer’s Penelope was a suitable mythological character with whom Catherine de’ Medici could identify; and that the Galerie d’Ulysse frescoes of Ulysses and Penelope were a means of public propaganda for the recently widowed queen- regent. ABSTRACT Title of Document: AMALIA VAN SOLMS AND THE FORMATION OF THE STADHOUDER’S ART COLLECTION, 1625-1675 Virginia C. Treanor, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Directed By: Professor Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr. Department of Art History and Archaeology This dissertation examines the role of Amalia van Solms (1602-1675), wife of Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange and Stadhouder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands (1584-1647), in the formation of the couple’s art collection. Amalia and Frederik Hendrik’s collection of fine and decorative arts was modeled after foreign, royal courts and they cultivated it to rival those of other great European treasure houses. While some scholars have recognized isolated instances of Amalia’s involvement with artistic projects at the Stadhouder’s court, this dissertation presents a more comprehensive account of these activities by highlighing specific examples of Amalia’s patronage and collecting practices. Through an examination of gifts of art, portraits of Amalia and her porcelain collection, this study considers the ways in which Amalia contributed to the formation of the Stadhouder’s art collection. This dissertation seeks to provide a greater knowledge not only of Amalia’s activities as a patron and collector, but also a more throrough understanding of the genesis and function of the collection as a whole, which reflected the power and glory of the House of Orange during the Dutch Golden Age. AMALIA VAN SOLMS AND THE FORMATION OF THE STADHOUDER’S ART COLLECTION, 1625-1675 By Virginia Clare Treanor Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2012 Advisory Committee: Professor Arthur K.

Jan Brueghel the Younger (Antwerp 1601 – 1678 Antwerp) How to cite Bakker, Piet. “Jan Brueghel the Younger” (2017). In The Leiden Collection Catalogue, 2nd ed. Edited by Arthur K. Wheelock Jr. New York, 2017–20. https://theleidencollection.com/artists/jan-brueghel-the-younger/ (archived June 2020). A PDF of every version of this biography is available in this Online Catalogue's Archive, and the Archive is managed by a permanent URL. New versions are added only when a substantive change to the narrative occurs. Jan Brueghel the Younger belonged to the third generation of a famous dynasty of painters. He was baptized in the St George Church in Antwerp on 13 September 1601. His parents were Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625), also known as “Velvet Brueghel,” and Isabella de Jode, daughter of the engraver Gerard de Jode.[1] His father was a famous and exceptionally successful painter who purchased a splendid house on the Lange Nieuwestraat in 1604. By that time, though, Jan had lost his mother, who had died the previous year. Soon thereafter his father took a second wife, Katharina van Marienberghe (d. 1627). Among the couple’s children was Ambrosius Brueghel (1617–75), who would also become a painter, and Anna Brueghel (1620–56), the future wife of the famous artist David Teniers the Younger (1610–90). Jan Brueghel the Younger would father Jan Pieter (1628–78) and Abraham Brueghel (1631–97), who constituted the fourth generation of this remarkable family of painters. Given his background it is hardly surprising that Brueghel became a painter. He received his first lessons from his father at the age of ten.

ABSTRACT Title of Document: MICHAEL SWEERTS (1618-1664) AND THE ACADEMIC TRADITION Lara Rebecca Yeager-Crasselt, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., Department of Art History and Archaeology This dissertation examines the career of Flemish artist Michael Sweerts (1618-1664) in Brussels and Rome, and his place in the development of an academic tradition in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. Sweerts demonstrated a deep interest in artistic practice, theory and pedagogy over the course of his career, which found remarkable expression in a number of paintings that represent artists learning and practicing their profession. In studios and local neighborhoods, Sweerts depicts artists drawing or painting after antique sculpture and live models, reflecting the coalescence of Northern and Southern attitudes towards the education of artists and the function and meaning of the early modern academy. By shifting the emphasis on Sweerts away from the Bamboccianti – the contemporary group of Dutch and Flemish genre painters who depicted Rome’s everyday subject matter – to a different set of artistic traditions, this dissertation is able to approach the artist from new contextual and theoretical perspectives. It firmly situates Sweerts within the artistic and intellectual contexts of his native Brussels, examining the classicistic traditions and tapestry industry that he encountered as a young, aspiring artist. It positions him and his work in relation to the Italian academic culture he experienced in Rome, as well as investigating his engagement with the work of the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy (1597-1643) and the French painter Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665). The breadth of Sweerts’ artistic and academic pursuits ultimately provide significant insight into the ways in which the Netherlandish artistic traditions of naturalism and working from life coalesced with the theoretical and practical aims of the academy.
