Frans Snyders (Antwerp 1579 - Antwerp 1657) A Buck, a Lobster on a China Plate, a Squirrel in a Basket of Fruit, Artichokes and a Boar’s Head in a Tureen, with Birds, a White Napkin and Asparagus on a Draped Table bearing a collection inventory number (lower right) oil on canvas 117 x 179 cm (46 x 70½ in) On a table draped with a scarlet cloth, the imposing figure of a dead buck deer occupies the centre of the composition. Around the magnificent animal, which has been gutted ready for quartering and hanging, manifestations of plenty take the form of overflowing baskets of fruit and vegetables, an enormous boar’s head, a red lobster, and a string of small birds. The dark, neutral wall behind the table serves as a sober backdrop to emphasize still more the exuberant feast of colour and form inherent to this still-life. A tall basket to the left of the composition overflows with grapes, peaches and apricots, their leaves and tendrils creating a swirling pattern around it: a red squirrel balances atop the fruit, stretching towards the most inaccessible apricot with delightful illogicality. To the right, another receptacle holds, among oranges and artichokes, the gigantic severed head of a wild boar, probably hunted at the same time as the buck. On the table next to the deer’s head are bunches of asparagus, and further left a dead partridge, a woodcock, and a string of small birds such as bullfinches. A black cat, bearing a peculiarly malevolent expression in its orange eyes, prepares to pounce over the stag’s neck to scavenge one of the birds.

THE IMAGE OF A QUEEN: THE REPRESENTATION OF CATHERINE DE’ MEDICI AS PENELOPE IN THE GALERIE D’ULYSSE by ELIZABETH LEHMAN MILLER (Under the Direction of Shelley Zuraw) ABSTRACT This study explores the patronage and significance of the five sixteenth-century fresco scenes illustrating the reunion of Ulysses and Penelope designed by Francesco Primaticcio in the no longer extant Galerie d’Ulysse at Fontainebleau. Correlations are drawn between the imagery represented in the frescoes and two other works of art from Primaticcio’s oeuvre: the tomb of King Henri II and Queen Catherine de’ Medici of France and a painting titled Ulysses and Penelope in the Toledo Museum of Art. Also examined in relation to the frescoes are Catherine de’ Medici’s efforts to create a positive public image of herself as Regent of France following the death of Henri II. It is argued that Homer’s Penelope was a suitable mythological character with whom Catherine de’ Medici could identify; and that the Galerie d’Ulysse frescoes of Ulysses and Penelope were a means of public propaganda for the recently widowed queen- regent. • Paul Devos Biography
ARTIST BROCHURE Decorate Your Life™ ArtRev.com Paul DeVos Born in the Flemish town of Hulst (located in the Netherlands today) around 1591, Paul De Vos belonged to a family of painters. His older brother, Cornelis De Vos, was famous for his portraits and history subjects, while his well-known brother-in-law, Frans Snyders, influenced De Vos' personal style and decision to paint mainly hunting scenes, still-life images, and animal subjects. De Vos began training in Snyders' studio sometime during the latter half of the first decade in the seventeenth century, and became a master in Antwerps significant Guild of Saint Luke in 1620. De Vos never signed his work, so it is extremely difficult to build a chronology of his development as a painter. However, he was known to have regularly completed commissions for King Philip IV of Spain. His style was similar to Snyderss, but De Voss color palette tended to be warmer, his brushwork looser, and he painted subjects, such as fighting cats, that Snyders never approached. Though much remains mystery about De Voss personal life, it seems he may have counted the painter Peter Paul Rubens among his friends, as records show that Rubens was the godfather to one of De Voss ten children. De Vos collaborated not only with Rubens but also with Anthony van Dyck.
