Tabb — Brian Tabb is academic dean and associate professor of biblical studies at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, an elder of Bethlehem Baptist Church, and general editor of Themelios. And can there be worse sickness than to know That we are never well, nor can be so? —John Donne, “An Anatomy of the World”1 nce again, the terrifying term “pandemic” has been headline news. On 31 December 2019, Chinese health officials reported cases of serious respiratory sickness in people associated with a large market in Wuhan, China.2 This outbreak was soon linked to a “novel coronavirus” (later given the innocuous name “COVID-19”), and the World Health Organization declared “a global O 3 public health emergency” due to the deadly virus. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization characterized COVID-19 as “a pandemic,” with confirmed cases of the virus in well over 100 countries, thousands of confirmed deaths, and thousands of new cases being reported each day.4 The Center for Disease Control ominously warns that there is “no vaccine to protect against COVID-19” and “no spe- cific antiviral treatment for COVID-19.”5 Despite the stunning scientific advances in our modern age, medical providers and researchers weren’t prepared to counter this coronavirus when it burst on the scene. The global spread of the coronavirus prompted nation-wide lockdowns in Italy and other countries, severe travel restrictions, closures to schools and businesses, and cancellations of ma- jor sporting events. The president of France even declared “war” on the invisible enemy.7 Churches on multiple continents have even been forced to cancel or modify corporate worship services. The coronavirus pandemic is the latest in a long line of disease outbreaks that have wreaked havoc on humanity over the centuries, and it will very likely not be the last. This editorial offers theological, historical, and pastoral reflections on disease and sickness. 1. Disease in Biblical Perspective Disease and death have indelibly marked the human experience east of Eden. In the beginning, there were no rogue parasites or harmful germs—everything was “very good” (Gen 1:31). Then everything changed when sin entered the world and “death through sin,” and creation itself “was subjected to futility” (Rom 5:12; 8:20). Though the OT does not explicate this point, the realities of sickness and disease accompany the “thorns and thistles” of creation’s curse and humanity’s “dust … to dust” sentence. Without sin, human beings would experience neither death nor illness, which serves as “death’s prelude.”8 The OT emphasizes that Yahweh alone has the ultimate authority to “wound” and to “heal” (Deut 32:39; cf. Job 5:18). Yahweh strikes Egypt with various “diseases” yet promises to heal and protect his people if they heed his voice (Exod 15:26; Deut 7:15). Likewise, when the Philistines capture the ark, Yahweh afflicted them with tumors and caused “a deathly panic” (1 Sam 5:6–12). “Pestilence” is also one of Yahweh’s four dreadful judgments against Israel, along with war, famine, and wild beasts (Ezek 14:21; cf. Deut 32:24–26; Rev 6:8). On several occasions in the OT, Yahweh afflicts his people with pestilence because of their unfaithfulness. For example, in response to David’s sinful census, Yahweh strikes the land with his “sword” of pestilence, and 70,000 men of Israel perished (1 Chron 21:12–14). Because Jehoram “walked in the way of the kings of Israel” and led Judah into spiritual harlotry, the Lord brings “a great plague” on the people and strikes the wicked king with a severe, incurable disease in his bowels, “and he died in great agony” (2 Chron 21:12–19).

    How Christian Leaders Interact with the Twitter by Zachary Horner — 59 How Christian Leaders Interact with the Twitter Zachary Horner* Print/Online Journalism Elon University Abstract This paper explores the relationship between Christian leaders and Twitter. Twitter’s founding resulted in an outburst in the use of the social media platform. Christian leaders quickly caught on, and today they use Twitter for a number of different purposes, seeking first and foremost to challenge and inspire their follow- ers. Through the study of 30 different leaders’ tweets, as well as different blog posts, articles and interviews outlining different approaches to Twitter and other social media, the study concluded that pastors were most concerned with getting across the basic message of Christianity while adapting their methods to include the new medium of Twitter. I. Introduction Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has been a leader in the Internet socialization of the world, greatly fulfilling its mission: “To give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.” With 500 million Tweets sent per day by 241 million monthly active users, it has penetrated modern society to a degree once known only by MySpace and Facebook.1 Christian pastors, to a degree, are no different. And some of them get more interaction on Twitter than pop star Justin Bieber. In June 2012, Amy O’Leary published a story in The New York Times titled “Christian Leaders Are Powerhouses on Twitter,” writing about how influential pastors and Christian speakers such as Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen and Max Lucado were generating more reactions on Twitter than Bieber.

    EDWARDS AND THE NEXT GENERATION OF EVANGELICALS Piper is coming to Sydney this year, and will draw massive crowds. Driscoll isn’t coming to Sydney this year, but it is estimated that a million of his sermons will be downloaded in Australia anyway. Many of us would like Keller to visit, but he is not especially the travelling sort. These men, the Holy Trinity (as they have been called) of neo-Calvinist church-planting energy, are getting our attention, and redrawing the map of contemporary evangelicalism, not just in Australia but all around the world. Of course, they are just the tip of the iceberg. We don’t hear as much in Australia about CJ Mahaney, or Ligon Duncan, or Mark Dever, or Ed Stetzer, or Josh Harris, or Rick Holland, but they are all influential in Reformed circles in the US, and represent what Collin Hansen, journalist for Christianity Today, has dubbed the young, restless and Reformed generation. Their mega-conferences which go under the titles of “Together for the Gospel,” or “Resolved,” “Passion” or “Next,” bring together thousands of pastors and lots of wannabes to hear expository preaching and to sing contemporary music with seriously theological lyrics. What is perhaps more significant, they all drink at the same well: Jonathan Edwards. I am unabashed apologist for Edwards, a great enthusiast for understanding the eighteenth century revivals, and especially the impact those revivals have had on the foundations of Christianity in Australia, but I am nevertheless amazed by the resurgence of interest in Edwards amongst Gen Y believers. I came to Edwards by reading about Methodism and Pietism.

    GOSPEL DEFINITIONS Compiled by Trevin Wax www.trevinwax.com Last Updated: September 2012 Definitions from Christians in the Past Gilbert Beebe Like so many Bible terms, the word GOSPEL has been given various definitions contrary to its original and proper meaning. The word has its origin “in Christ before the foundation of the world.” This was contained in the “promise” God made before the foundation of the world. (Tit. 1:2) The “gospel,” the “good news” or “good tidings” is the declared fulfilment of that promise. In Isaiah 61:1-3 is found the outstanding proclamation made by the Sum and Substance of the good tidings, — Jesus Christ Himself: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the meek, He has sent Me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn. To appoint to them that mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.” The Redeemer repeated this same proclamation of Himself in the synagogue. While this prophetical statement is often quoted, its full significance is rarely understood. In this one sweeping declaration, there is encouched – not the beginning of the gospel, not a part of its fulfilment, – the grand total of what the Son of Man declared on the cross: “IT IS FINISHED”! The Greek word “evanggelion” is translated “gospel” in the King James Version.

    New Calvinism As It Relates to Salvation Comments by Jerry Collins and Dave DeWitt Perspective We are writing from the perspective of those who disagree with the ideas of the movement often labeled “New Calvinism.” The label is not important, and it may vary from place-to-place, but understanding how these people think and what they teach about salvation is crucial. It is our belief that this movement is: 1. Limiting the accomplishment of the death of Christ on the cross, by saying the cross is an insuffi- cient payment for sin 2. Denying the Biblical concept of salvation by grace through faith alone 3. Rejecting the work of evangelism which brought so many to Christ 4. Denying our freedom in Christ, bringing believers into bondage Some of the leaders in this New Calvinist movement include John Piper, John MacArthur, R. C. Sproul, Matt Chandler, Kevin DeYoung, Wayne Grudem, and Tim Keller. All leaders in the Gospel Coalition are in the New Calvinist movement. In this article, we will focus on the comments of John Piper and John MacArthur. This is not an attempt to attack the character of these men, nor is it a challenge of their relationship with God or their other teachings. But we do feel they are seriously in error about the con- cepts and implications of their doctrine of salvation. Definition New Calvinism is a movement that embraces the historical doctrines of Calvinism, while seeking to en- gage those doctrines in present-day culture. The purpose of this paper is to review the New Calvinism teaching on salvation and sanctification, which from their perspective is all about obtaining, maintain- ing, and developing a faith which may or may not get us to heaven.

These three nationally recognized leaders declared C.J. Mahaney fit for ministry and a model to be followed after doing a superficial investigation in less than two weeks that was terribly rigged. It is another egregious example of the corruption that has surrounded Mahaney for so very long. The following events took place in 2011. Chronological Overview July 6 - I send out The Documents to the pastors in Sovereign Grace Ministries and C.J. steps down as President of SGM. July 7 - A new puppet Board is put into place by C.J., Dave Harvey and Jeff Purswell.
