    From Boy to Man The Marks of Manhood by R. Albert Mohler Jr. President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary When does a boy become a man? That interesting question was recently posed to me, and it raises some of the most important issues facing Christians today. While the world seems increasingly confused about matters as basic as what it means to be male and female, Christians are called to frame our arguments in distinctively biblical terms. All around us, cultural developments and media messages communicate a fog of confusion over questions of gender. In reality, these issues lie right along the fault lines of today’s culture war and its most controversial points of debate. For many years, this society has been experimenting with the most fundamental realities of human existence. The essence of what it means to be male or female has been routinely discounted by a society infatuated with unlimited self-expression and assertions of personal autonomy. Women are now joined by men, who complain that traditional expectations about gender roles are oppressive, limiting and intolerant. An entire generation of young women is trying to find a way to genuine womanhood against the tidal force of ideological feminism. Similarly, boys and young men are desperately looking for models of manhood and answers to their urgent questions of male identity, male responsibility and male roles. Christians understand that God created human beings as male and female – for His glory and for our good. The differences between the sexes are not matters of evolutionary accident, but are clear indications of God’s sublime and perfect design for human happiness.

Our concern at this gathering is the assault on religious liberty now experienced within the United States and throughout Western civilization. The very civilization that paid an incalculable price through the centuries to defend and preserve human rights and human liberty now grows hostile to the most basic liberty of all. History's most courageous experiment in self-government predicated upon unalienable rights now seeks to alienate the unalienable. The cultural left now dares to use the term religious liberty only in scare quotes. How did this happen? Most conservatives in the United States have vastly underestimated the reality and comprehensiveness of the challenge we face. We see religious liberty denied when a cake baker in Colorado experiences sustained efforts to put him out of business or worse. That is accompanied nationwide by florists, photographers, and a host of others. We see the fire chief of Atlanta, Georgia lose his job because he dared to uphold a biblical standard of sexual morality, to teach it in his church, and to put it in print. That is now impossible for someone who would be the fire chief of Atlanta, Georgia. We see Christian schools and ministries confront unprecedented challenges across several fronts, and we see a continual effort to court Christians to surrender to the new regime of sexual rules, gender identity, intersectionality, and identity politics. The enemies of religious liberty are playing hardball and we were warned.

    1 The Future Of Southern Baptists: Mandates For What We Should Be In The 21st Century Southern Baptists have a colorful and fascinating history by any standard of measure. From the Convention’s humble beginnings in Augusta, Georgia on May 8, 1845 (only 293 persons attended the Inaugural Convention and 273 came from 3 states: Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia),1 the Convention’s 2004 Annual could boast of 40 State Conventions, 1,194 Associations, 43,024 Churches and a Total Membership of 16,315,050. There were 377,357 Baptisms, and other additions totaled 422,350. Cooperative Program Giving for 2002-2003 was $183,201,694.14, and Total Receipts recorded was $9,648,530,640.2 This is quite impressive any way you look at it, and for all of this and more Southern Baptists give thanks and glory to God. We are grateful to our Lord for what He has done for us and through us. However, it is to the future that we must now look. In spite of periodic blips on the cultural and moral screen, our nation grows more secular and our world more hostile to “the faith once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Southern Baptists, in the midst of the swirling tides of modernity, have attempted to stake their claim and send a clear message on who we are.
