Book of First Samuel Chapter 1 First Samuel in the flow of Old Testament history: • Judges & Ruth – no king • 1 Samuel – man’s king (Saul) • 2 Samuel – God’s king (David) First Samuel is a book of transition: • From a time of judges to a time of kings • From a theocracy to a monarchy • Samuel was God’s bridge-builder . He was the last of the judges and the first of the prophets. He became the bridge to the kings of Israel by anointing the first two kings, Saul and David. Samuel gave spiritual leadership to the people at a critical time. The Bible describes those times in Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. There was no king, but God raised up a prophet who called the nation back to God. Samuel was a man who stood in the gap. A. T. Pierson once said: “History is His story .” God is ultimately in control of history, but God uses people to change the course of history, and in this case He used Samuel. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2019, 288 pp., $29.99. Basics of Hebrew Discourse is authoreD by Matthew H. Patton (pastor of Cove- nant Presbyterian Church in Vandalia, OH) anD FreDeric Clarke Putnam (associate professor of Bible and liberal studies, The Templeton Honors College at Eastern University) and edited by Miles V. Van Pelt (Alan Belcher Professor of OT and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological SeMinary). This is the newest aDdition to ZonDervan’s popular Basics of … language series anD maKes a significant contri- bution, not only to the series, but also to the fields of discourse analysis, Hebrew exegesis, and Hebrew language pedagogy. Written as a textbook for upper-level Hebrew students, the book is grounDbreaking in that it brings together these three fields in a way that is easy to understanD anD is useful for stuDents anD their teach- ers. The front matter for the book includes acknowledgments, a general introDuc- tion by Van Pelt, abbreviations, a table of graMMatical terMs, anD a bibliography. The authors then divide the book into two main sections, with Patton discussing Hebrew prose and Putnam covering Hebrew poetry. The Hebrew prose section begins with an introduction and a chapter that covers Discourse analysis in general. These are followed by chapters on discourse markers in Hebrew, verbal sequences in narrative and non-narrative, placing non-verbal elements before a verb, and verbless clauses. -
Sarah Coakley and the Future of Systematic Theology
Being George Eliot: An Impossible Standpoint? Janice McRandal “Coakley is the George Eliot of Theologians.”1 This claim, made by Mark Oppenheimer, has sat uncomfortably in my memory for many years now, punctuated by a perpetual question mark. Oppenheimer was most likely referring to the way prose operated in Coakley’s work, but the ambiguity, or rather the irony, of this analogy has stuck. Eliot, of course, chose to conceal her gender. It was a means to an end, a way to penetrate the literary community of the Victorian era; a choice she felt would allow her work to be taken seriously and shield her from the puritanical gaze. It was a successful strategy for Mary Ann Evans: George Eliot’s legacy is secure alongside the great writers of Western literature. But this is hardly an uncomplicated ascription, perhaps demonstrated by the lasting confusion surrounding Virginia Woolf’s famous declaring of Eliot’s Middlemarch to be “one of the few English novels written for grown- up people.”2 In Coakley’s case, writing systematic theology as a woman 1. She has been celebrated for her “erudite, challenging and eirenic theological voice,”3 her work being described as a “connoisseur’s piece,”4 while simultaneously being critiqued for her academic Fachsprache,5 an ongoing issue of concern for feminists debating the use of exclusive language in the field.6 Much of this evaluation seems to depend on assumptions regarding what constitutes a serious systematician, or a solemn feminist. -

TMSJ 18/1 (Spring 2007) 3-21 THE NATURE OF TRUTH: POSTMODERN OR PROPOSITIONAL? Robert L. Thomas Professor of New Testament Ernest R. Sandeen laid a foundation for a contemporary concept of truth that was unique among evangelicals with a high view of Scripture. He proposed that the concept of inerrancy based on a literal method of interpretation was late in coming during the Christian era, having its beginning among the Princeton theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He ruled out their doctrines related to inspiration because they were based on rational thinking which he taught was absent from earlier Christian thought. Subsequent evaluations of Sandeen’s work have disproved his assumption that those doctrines were absent from Christianity prior to the Princeton era. Yet well-known Christian writers have since built on Sandeen’s foundation that excludes rationality and precision from an interpretation of Scripture. The Sandeenists criticize the Princetonians for overreacting in their response to modernism, for their use of literal principles of interpretation, for defining propositional truth derived from the Bible, and for excluding the Holy Spirit’s help in interpretation. All such criticisms have proven to be without foundation. The Princetonians were not without fault, but their utilization of common sense in biblical interpretation was their strong virtue. Unfortunately, even the Journal of the inerrantist Evangelical Theological Society has promoted some of the same errors as Sandeen. The divine element in inspiration is a guarantee of the rationality and precision of Scripture, because God, the ultimate author of Scripture, is quite rational and precise, as proven by Scripture itself. -

Sarah Coakley invites the reader to reconceive the relation of sexual desire and the desire for God, and – through the lens of prayer practice – to chart the intrinsic connection of this relation to a theology of the Trinity. The goal is to integrate the demanding ascetical undertaking of prayer with the recovery of lost and neglected materials from the tradition, and thus to reanimate doctrinal reflection both imaginatively and spiritually. What emerges is a vision of human longing for the triune God which is both edgy and compelling: Coakley’s théologie totale questions standard shib- boleths on ‘sexuality’ and ‘gender’, and thereby suggests a way beyond current destructive impasses in the churches. Womanhood If Biblical “I HATE PAUL!” I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that from my students, mostly young women scarred by how Paul has been used against them as they have been told to be silent (1 Corinthians 14), to submit to their husbands (Ephesians 5), not to teach or exercise authority over men (1 Timothy 2), and to be workers at home (Titus 2). They have been taught that God designed women to follow male headship (1 Corinthians 11), focusing on family and home (Colossians 3; 1 Peter 3), and that occupations other than family should be secondary for women, mostly undertaken out of necessity or after their children have left the house. A few years ago, a student came to my office ostensibly to discuss her class paper, but it soon became clear that what she really wanted to discuss was her vocation. She asked me: Did God call you to be a professor as well as a mom and a pastor’s wife? Was it hard? Did you feel guilty about working outside the home? Was your husband sup- portive? What did people in your church think? She shared her frustrations as a career-minded Christian woman from a conservative background who was trying to reconcile church and family expectations with her vocational calling. -

April 1, 2016 CHRISTIAN PATRIARCHY AND THE LIBERATION OF EVE Jennifer Emily Sims, B.A. MALS Mentor: Theresa Sanders, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Christian Patriarchy is a set of beliefs held by many conservative Christians that outlines gender roles based on a literal interpretation of scripture. These gender roles, also referred to as biblical manhood and biblical womanhood, dictate the hierarchy of authority where Christ is the head of the household, the husband is the head of the wife. Children are primed at a very young age to demonstrate the tenets of biblical manhood and biblical womanhood, but for young girls, their paths are strictly laid out for them to marry, birth many Godly children, and serve their husbands. The fundamentalist reading of Genesis 2-3 is used to justify female submission via Eve’s creation and subsequent role in the Fall of Humanity. This evangelical interpretation uses Genesis 2-3 as the foundational text to first justify women as subordinate based on creation order, and secondly justify women’s submission on Eve’s role in the Fall of Humanity. By using biblical interpretations to subordinate the woman’s position vis-à-vis her husband, women in these conservative Christian homes are locked into this role with little chance to follow a different path, and are often dependent on a dominant male figure for survival. -

The Elijah and Elisha Narrative Against its Ancient Near Eastern Background SHAUL BAR (UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS) ABSTRACT The Elijah and Elisha cycles have similar stories where the prophet brings a dead child back to life. In addition, in the Elisha story, a corpse is thrown into the prophet’s grave; when it comes into con- tact with one of his bones, the man returns to life. Thus the question is do these stories allude to resurrection, or “only” miraculous cures? What was the purpose of the inclusion of these stories and what message did they convey? In this paper we will show that these are legends that were intended to lend greater credence to prophetic activity and to indicate the Lord’s power over death. A INTRODUCTION There is consensus among scholars that Dan 12:2-3, which they assign to the 1 second century B.C.E., refers to the resurrection of the dead. The question be- comes whether biblical texts earlier than this era allude to this doctrine. The phrase “resurrection of the dead” never appears in the Bible. Scholars searching for biblical allusions to resurrection have cited various idioms.2 They list verbs including “arise,”3 “wake up,”4 and “live,”5 all of which can denote a return to life. We also find “take,”6 which refers to being taken to Heaven, the noun “life,”7 and “see.”8 In the present paper however, we shall examine the stories of the Elijah and Elisha cycles which include similar tales in which the prophet brings a dead child back to life: in Elijah’s case, the son of the widow of Zare- phath (1 Kgs 17:17-24); in Elisha’s, the son of the Shunammite matron (2 Kgs 4:31-37).
