Alexander Corrigan John Napier of Merchiston’s Plaine Discovery: A Challenge to the Sixteenth Century Apocalyptic Tradition Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD, Ecclesiastical History The University of Edinburgh 2014 Abstract This thesis examines John Napier of Merchiston’s 1593 commentary on the Book of Revelation within the context of sixteenth century apocalyptic thought in Scotland and England. Napier is usually remembered as a mathematician and this study aims to contribute to a more complete understanding of the man. Its most important contribution to scholarship is its discussion of Napier’s identification of himself as a conduit for divine revelation, chosen by God to expose the mysteries of scripture in the final age of human history. This placed him in the tradition of reformers like Knox but he differed from them in two crucial ways. Firstly, he broke from the texts that had influenced him by controversially predicting the approximate date of the apocalypse. Some of these works, and responses to Napier’s conclusions, are considered. Secondly, he did not regard a call to ministry as a facet of his prophetic status. Instead, he saw his biblical commentary as the expression of an intellectual gift from God. He employed grandiose eschatological themes to appeal to the highest echelons of society in an attempt to affect religious change. His dedicatory epistle to James VI was a direct correspondence that revealed shared knowledge and experiences. Napier’s approaches to the apocalypse and alchemy stemmed from a worldview that presented him as belonging to an intellectual and moral elite, preordained by God to receive and disseminate hidden knowledge at appointed times. The impact of historical events on the content of his work, including the Spanish Armada, Scottish Reformation and resulting sense of unity between Scotland and England, are assessed. The current biographical understanding of Napier is critiqued. The unique aspects of the Plaine Discovery, including the explicit chronology of salvation history that framed its conclusions, are discussed in detail. i ii Declaration This thesis is of my own composition and is based solely on my own research. Canongate 1.1. Background Canongate’s close proximity to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is situated at the eastern end of Canongate Burgh, has been influential on both the fortunes of the Burgh and the establishment of Canongate Kirk. In 1687, King James VII declared that the Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse was to be used as the chapel for the re-established Order of the Thistle and for the performance of Catholic rites when the Royal Court was in residence at Holyrood. The nave of this chapel had been used by the Burgh of Canongate as a place of Protestant worship since the Reformation in the mid sixteenth century, but with the removal of access to the Abbey Church to practise their faith, the parishioners of Canongate were forced to find an alternative venue in which to worship. Fortunately, some 40 years before this edict by James VII, funds had been bequeathed to the inhabitants of Canongate to erect a church in the Burgh - and these funds had never been spent. This money was therefore used to build Canongate Kirk and a Kirkyard was laid out within its grounds shortly after building work commenced in 1688. 1 Development It has been ruminated whether interments may have occurred on this site before the construction of the Kirk or the landscaping of the Kirkyard2 as all burial rights within the church had been removed from the parishioners of the Canongate in the 1670s, when the Abbey Church had became the chapel of the King.3 The earliest known plan of the Kirkyard dates to 1765 (Figure 1), and depicts a rectilinear area on the northern side of Canongate burgh with arboreal planting 1 John Gifford et al., Edinburgh, The Buildings of Scotland: Pevsner Architectural Guides (London : Penguin, 1991).

However, it raises the question of whether Craig’s undoubted reputation as a writer has led to a misleading assessment of his prominence as an advocate in the legal profession of his day. A. INTRODUCTION Thomas Craig (c 1538–1608) is best known to posterity as the author of Jus Feudale and as a commissioner appointed by James VI in 1604 to discuss the possi- bility of a union of laws between England and Scotland.1 Following from the latter enterprise, he was the author of De Hominio (published in 1695 as Scotland”s * Lecturer in Law, University of Glasgow.     Mary Queen of Scots Mary Stuart was born on the 8th December 1542. Mary’s father was King James V of Scotland and her mother was a French Princess called Mary of Guise. Just before Mary was born, her father was injured in battle against the English. He later died of these injuries on the 14th December 1542. This meant Mary became Queen of Scotland when she was only six days old. She was known as Mary Queen of Scots. Mary was only a child when she was crowned Queen which meant that Scotland needed a regent. A regent is someone who looks after the country until a child King or Queen is old enough to rule. Mary of Guise wanted to act as regent for her daughter but the powerful Scottish Lords decided that a distant relative of Mary’s called the Earl of Arran would be regent instead. He was known to have a desire to be King. At this time Scotland was a difficult country to rule. Wars were raging between the Scottish Catholics and Protestants, and King Henry VIII of England wanted to rule in Scotland as well. His soldiers regularly invaded Scottish land. By the time Mary was born, Scotland had already lost many of its best soldiers (including King James V himself) in battles against the English. With no luck invading Scotland, Henry VIII employed a different tactic instead. He decided that his five year old son, Prince Edward, would marry Mary. This would mean both countries would be ruled by him. However, the King of France also wanted Mary to marry his son, Dauphine Francis (Dauphine means heir to the throne in French).

    CHAPTER IX FACULTIES, DEPARTMENTS, AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE GENERAL BOARD The provisions contained in this Chapter are Regulations of the General Board GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR FACULTIES 1. There shall be a Faculty in respect of each of the subjects enumerated in the Schedule appended to these regulations. Preliminary 2. In October of every year, not later than the first day of Full Term, the Registrary shall publish a lists. preliminary list of the members of each Faculty. Objections. 3. Objections to the inclusion or omission of any name may be addressed to the Secretary of the Board of the Faculty concerned, and shall be decided by that Board subject to an appeal to the General Board. Any such decision of a Faculty Board or the General Board shall be communicated to the objector and to the Registrary forthwith. Corrected lists. 4. As early as possible in the Michaelmas Term each year, and in any case not later than 28 October, the Secretary of the Board of each Faculty shall send to the Registrary the names of persons who are members of the Faculty under Regulation 1(c) of the Regulations for Faculty Membership. Promulgation 5. On the fifth weekday of November the Registrary shall promulgate the lists of the Faculties, and of lists. the lists so promulgated shall constitute the several Faculties for the purpose of the annual meetings of Annual meetings. the Faculties. Those meetings shall be held after the sixth day and before the twenty-fifth day of November. Between the promulgation of the lists and the end of the academical year the Registrary shall not be required to ascertain or to notify any change that may occur in the membership of a Faculty.
