Wisse Kelly Scott Johnson Sholem Schwarzbard: Biography of a Jewish Assassin Abstract The thesis represents the first complete academic biography of a Jewish clockmaker, warrior poet and Anarchist named Sholem Schwarzbard. Schwarzbard's experience was both typical and unique for a Jewish man of his era. It included four immigrations, two revolutions, numerous pogroms, a world war and, far less commonly, an assassination. The latter gained him fleeting international fame in 1926, when he killed the Ukrainian nationalist leader Symon Petliura in Paris in retribution for pogroms perpetrated during the Russian Civil War (1917-20). After a contentious trial, a French jury was sufficiently convinced both of Schwarzbard's sincerity as an avenger, and of Petliura's responsibility for the actions of his armies, to acquit him on all counts. Mostly forgotten by the rest of the world, the assassin has remained a divisive figure in Jewish-Ukrainian relations, leading to distorted and reductive descriptions his life. -

Numerous attempts have been made at explaining the origin of the Hun- garian word hajdú.1 In this paper another attempt is made to add – where it is possible – new data to its etymology. The origin of the discussed word is quite a complex and extraordinary case. A few years ago, besides the Hungarian etymology, another suggestion was pro- posed by M. Ivanics, who showed us a possibility of deriving hajdú from Turkic, namely the Kipchak-Turkic *haydaġ.2 Consequently, in our work we would like to compare these two suggestions. U.D.C. 930.1(091):329.733(477.64) KOTSUR Halyna H., Ph.D., docent, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv [email protected] (Kyiv) MILITARY ACTIVITY OF LAST KISH ATAMAN OF ZAPOROZ’KA SICH PETRO KALNYSHEVSKY IN TOTALITARIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY The article shows that the Soviet, including Ukrainian Soviet historiography, developed contradictorily, had its own specificity, which was conditioned by the historical conditions of the time. During the Stalinist repressions, it lost its scientific functions, turned into an ideological maid of power. During the Brezhnev period, Ukrainian historiography was influenced by the negative effects of authoritarianism, the policies of total russification, the persecution of dissent. Diaspora historians have defended the national traditions of Ukrainian historiography. It was proved that the military activity of the Cossack ataman of Zaporoz’ka Sich P. Kalnyshevsky wasn’t studied specifically, some pages of his biography were falsified or silenced. The Zaporozhian leader was mentioned in the context of the Russian-Turkish wars of the eighteenth century. The main purpose of the article is to reflect the issue of the military art of the Cossack ataman of Zaporoz’ka Sich P. Kalnyshevsky by the Soviet historiography during the time of totalitarianism. There are analyzed the features of the scientific works on this problem in the conditions of monopolization and sovietization of historiography, total introduction of the methodology of party and class interpretation of the historical process.
