However, I will argue that the English of this period were, in many respects, even more committed to music than their continental counterparts. The problem, for England, was not that it made no music during this period, but that it made the wrong kind of music, and enjoyed it in the wrong ways. At a time when Germanic critics like E.T.A. Hoffmann and A.B. Marx were establishing grand, large-scale musical masterpieces (and the singular geniuses who created them) as the highest form of art, the English prioritized musical process over the musical work, and remained committed to music that could be played and enjoyed socially, in drawing rooms. Though her novels are widely considered classic works of fiction, their subject matter has led to them being grouped with novels by other female authors under the banner of “Women’s literature,” a sort of “special interest” genre, which, as a whole, is often overlooked as “minutiae” in the grand narrative of literary history. Although Harold Bloom groups Austen with the likes of Tolstoy and Proust as one of the greatest novelists in The Western Canon, her inclusion – unlike Tolstoy’s, for example – has nothing to do with the content of her novels and everything to do with the artistry of her novels despite the “narrowness” of their subject matter. Indeed, it would seem that her place in the canon has been contingent on the assumptions of critics since the 1820’s that Austen was happy to write within the prescribed “feminine” boundaries and never presumed or aspired to do more. 2 1 Jane Austen to Cassandra Austen, 20 May 1813. Virginia Woolf explores this tendency at length in A Room of One’s Own: And since a novel has this correspondence to real life, its values are to some extent those of real life […] Yet it is the masculine values that prevail […] And these values are inevitably transferred from life to fiction. This is an important book, the critic assumes, because it deals with war. This is an insignificant book because it deals with the feelings of women in a drawing-room. A scene in a battle-field is more important than a scene in a shop--everywhere and much more subtly the difference of value persists.3 Woolf’s description of the disregard for the “small” focus of women’s literature could also be used to describe the traditional disregard, in music history, of nineteenth- century English music, which has been similarly relegated to the sidelines of the canonical “metanarrative.” Despite overwhelming evidence that England enjoyed a vibrant musical culture during the long eighteenth century, the standard music history textbooks would have us believe that after the death of Henry Purcell the English gave up on music altogether, and that by the late eighteenth century they had to import all of their musicians and composers from Germany and Italy. I argue, however, that the problem was not that the English made no music but rather that they made the wrong kind of music. Austen’s descriptions of musical scenes in her novels will serve as a point of convergence for the various kinds of evidence that I will use to support this claim. During the time when the performance canon was being set, German music theorists such as E.T.A. Hoffmann and A.B. University of York Department of Music September 1998 Broadwood Grand Piano of 1801 (Finchcocks Collection, Goudhurst, Kent) Abstract: The Evolution of the Broadwood Grand Piano, 1785-1998 This dissertation describes the way in which one company's product - the grand piano - evolved over a period of two hundred and thirteen years. The account begins by tracing the origins of the English grand, then proceeds with a description of the earliest surviving models by Broadwood, dating from the late eighteenth century. Next follows an examination of John Broadwood and Sons' piano production methods in London during the early nineteenth century, and the transition from small-scale workshop to large factory is noted. The dissertation then proceeds to record in detail the many small changes to grand design which took place as the nineteenth century progressed, ranging from the extension of the keyboard compass, to the introduction of novel technical features such as the famous Broadwood barless steel frame. The dissertation concludes by charting the survival of the Broadwood grand piano since 1914, and records the numerous difficulties which have faced the long-established company during the present century. The unique feature of this dissertation is the way in which much of the information it contains has been collected as a result of the writer's own practical involvement in piano making, tuning and restoring over a period of thirty years; he has had the opportunity to examine many different kinds of Broadwood grand from a variety of historical periods.

    ! Abstract! The purpose of this study is to discuss the problems that occur when some of Franz Liszt’s original pedal markings are realized on the modern piano. Both the construction and sound of the piano have developed since Liszt’s time. Some of Liszt’s curious long pedal indications produce an interesting sound effect on instruments built in his time. When these pedal markings are realized on modern pianos the sound is not as clear as on a Liszt-time piano and in some cases it is difficult to recognize all the tones in a passage that includes these pedal markings. The precondition of this study is the respectful following of the pedal indications as scored by the composer. Therefore, the study tries to find means of interpretation (excluding the more frequent change of the pedal), which would help to achieve a clearer sound with the !effects of the long pedal on a modern piano.! This study considers the factors that create the difference between the sound quality of Liszt-time and modern instruments. Single tones in different registers have been recorded on both pianos for that purpose. The sound signals from the two pianos have been presented in graphic form and an attempt has been made to pinpoint the dissimilarities. In addition, some examples of the long pedal desired by Liszt have been recorded and the sound signals of these examples have been analyzed. The study also deals with certain aspects of the impact of texture and register on the clarity of sound in the case of the long pedal.

    February 14, 2019 The Power of Love Anyone who has been in a romantic relationship or has raised a child can attest to love’s undeniable ability to affect us. Although love songs and romantic comedies tend to refer to love as “matters of the heart,” it’s the brain that holds love’s mysteries. Specifically, it’s the chemicals the brain produces that are responsible for the power love has over our minds and bodies. One such chemical – oxytocin – has been the subject of many research studies. It has been linked to decreasing pain and increasing emotional attachment. Currently, researchers have focused on using it to treat a variety of mental illnesses from schizophrenia to post traumatic stress disorder. “Hugging and handholding, for example, are noted to calm the nervous system, to increase oxytocin, the love hormone, and reduce cortisol, the culprit stress hormone that negatively affects immune function,” explains Dr. Tiffany Field who heads the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Health System. “Oxytocin was first discovered in prairie voles,” says Dr. Field. “Mothers who nurtured their babies more had higher oxytocin levels.” It is released when you give birth, cuddle, have an orgasm and breastfeed. It fosters bonding and it also decreases pain, which may be why even after the painful act of giving birth women decide to have more children. Oxytocin isn’t the only love chemical, though. There are several others, each with its own special power. Condemned people were executed in public, for everyone to see. Children were not treated any differently to adults and punished in exactly the same ways. In 1823 Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel finally removed 180 crimes from the list of those punished by execution. Reading’s rowdy revellers In Georgian times Highwaymen often robbed travellers and mail coaches on the Bath Road in Reading. Thomas Lympus robbed the mail coach outside Reading in 1738 and was later executed. Reading’s Blagrave Piazza (right), beside Saint Laurence’s church, had been a smart arcade but in the 18th century it had become ‘a place of theft, drinking and fornication’. So much so that in the 1860s the Victorians finally decided to tear it down. Crime and punishment Conditions in Georgian prisons were terrible: children were housed with adults and gaolers were often corrupt. Many inmates fell ill and died. Gaolers demanded a fee from prisoners for their release and many could not afford it. Prisons were assessed by reformers and in 1823 the Gaols Act made prisons fairer. Reading County Gaol was built in 1796, on the site of Reading Abbey. There were other older prisons in the town, the Birdewell in the GreyFriar’s nave for example and another beside Saint Mary’s church (left).
