Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time. -

Disraeli and Gladstone: Opposing Forces By Robert Blake Disraeli and Gladstone were both politicians of extraordinary ability - but their personalities clashed and they heartily loathed each other. Robert Blake, the British constitutional historian, compares their political careers, and charts their stormy relationship. Mutual dislike In the general election of 1 April 1880, the Conservative party under Benjamin Disraeli was crushingly defeated by the Liberals (known as Whigs) - under William Gladstone. Lord Granville, a moderate Whig, wrote to Queen Victoria who would, he knew, be bitterly disappointed by the decision of the electorate: 'Lord Beaconsfield [Disraeli] and Mr Gladstone are men of extraordinary ability; they dislike each other more than is usual among public men. Of no other politician Lord Beaconsfield would have said in public that his conduct was worse than those who had committed the Bulgarian atrocities. He has the power of saying in two words that which drives a person of Mr Gladstone's peculiar temperament into a state of great excitement.' There is no doubt that the two statesmen hated each other. There is no doubt that the two statesmen hated each other. Disraeli referred to his rival in a letter to Lord Derby as '...that unprincipled maniac Gladstone - extraordinary mixture of envy, vindictiveness, hypocrisy and superstition'. And Gladstone more moderately said of his old enemy, 'the Tory party had principles by which it would and did stand for bad and for good. All this Dizzy destroyed'. When Lord Granville wrote to Queen Victoria, Disraeli, born in 1804, had one more year to live; Gladstone, who was born in 1810, had another eighteen. -
The Corn Laws
The Corn Laws After the end of the Napoleonic Wars it was feared that cheap foreign grain would flood the British market and that domestic producers would suffer financially. The first of the Corn Laws was introduced by the British Government in 1815 to protect domestic landowners and farmers from this threat. The high tariffs imposed made it too expensive to import grain, even when domestic supplies were in short supply. The price of bread increased and rioting was not uncommon. Eventually, despite strong opposition from his own party, Conservative Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel successfully repealed the law in 1846. On display here is a selection of documents relating to the Corn Laws, including a political cartoon and election broadsheets (the topic featured prominently in election campaigns). The Anti-Corn Law League, a political movement set up in 1836, fought to abolish the Corn Laws and produced the innovative free-trade sticker seen here on an envelope dating from 1842. All the documents presented here are held by the University of Nottingham at Manuscripts and Special Collections. The University collects archival material relating to the history of the University itself and its predecessor bodies, including the Midland Agricultural and Dairy College, the history of the East Midlands, and the research interests of the University. He aimed to integrate beauty and art to expose the art of life as promoter of “Art for Art’s Sake”. Really, he influenced London society by his great domination as a great artist with extraordinary descriptive power. So he tried to criticize traditions, beliefs, customs, behaviors, rituals, and social codes of 19 th century in upper class family in which they are well- known as Victorian morality in Victorian Era. According to him people are victims of restrictions in their life then they couldn’t take enough pleasure of it. So they have to sacrifice their desires and aspirations to rescue the frame of their family customs. Thus, Wilde tried to present all conduct contrasts among contemporary people in his literary great works. Actually he depicted his thoughts against Victorian morality in one of his prominent works; An Ideal Husband (1895). An Ideal Husband is Wilde’s third play which revolves around blackmail and political corruption and touches on the themes of public and private honor. It is one of the most serious of Wilde’s social comedies and it contains very strong political overtones, ironically and cynically examining the contemporary political landscape. -

Critics, including David Trotter, ask ‘under what generic conditions have objects appeared as objects in a literary text?’ (Trotter 2008). I argue that between the 1840s and 1880s it is frequently the reflection of the discourse of success and failure in society, reflected through objects, that gives material things symbolic value within plot and form of realist novels, where success and failure are persistent themes. -

Crime and Punishment – The Georgians Fact Sheet Learn about crimes, laws, trials and punishments in Georgian times, between 1714-1837. Harsh punishment The Georgian era was a time of mass unemployment and many people were forced into a life of crime to survive. The Georgians used capital punishment, the death penalty, for many offences including minor crimes like stealing. This was known as the Bloody Code. Condemned people were executed in public, for everyone to see. Children were not treated any differently to adults and punished in exactly the same ways. In 1823 Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel finally removed 180 crimes from the list of those punished by execution. Reading’s rowdy revellers In Georgian times Highwaymen often robbed travellers and mail coaches on the Bath Road in Reading. Thomas Lympus robbed the mail coach outside Reading in 1738 and was later executed. Reading’s Blagrave Piazza (right), beside Saint Laurence’s church, had been a smart arcade but in the 18th century it had become ‘a place of theft, drinking and fornication’. So much so that in the 1860s the Victorians finally decided to tear it down. Crime and punishment Conditions in Georgian prisons were terrible: children were housed with adults and gaolers were often corrupt. Many inmates fell ill and died. Gaolers demanded a fee from prisoners for their release and many could not afford it. Prisons were assessed by reformers and in 1823 the Gaols Act made prisons fairer. Reading County Gaol was built in 1796, on the site of Reading Abbey. There were other older prisons in the town, the Birdewell in the GreyFriar’s nave for example and another beside Saint Mary’s church (left). -

Collins Examining Committee Members: Dr. Peter Logan, Advisor Temple University Department of English Dr. Priya Joshi Temple University Department of English Dr. Steven Newman Temple University Department of English Dr. Teresa Dolan Temple University Department of Art History Dr. Kate Thomas Bryn Mawr College, Department of English ii ABSTRACT This dissertation addresses how the philosophy, subculture, and sexuality of aestheticism interact with the form of the nineteenth-century novel. One primary result of this exploration is a nuanced delineation of the aesthetic novel in its formal characteristics, its content, and most notably, in the sexually charged silences that both this form and content reveal—silences made audible to invested aesthetic readers through coded doubleness. Through thus defining the aesthetic novel and seeking to articulate the unspoken sexual transgressions that are, as is argued, requisite therein, this project sheds new light both on the partially submerged sexuality of aestheticism as a movement, and on why novels account for so small a portion of the aesthetic movement’s output—topics first raised in part by Linda Dowling, Dennis Denisoff, and Talia Schaffer. By engaging Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), Vernon Lee’s Miss Brown (1884), Walter Pater’s Marius the Epicurean (1885), Robert Hichens' The Green Carnation (1894), John Meade Falkner’s The Lost Stradivarius (1895), and Aubrey Beardsley’s Venus and Tannhäuser (1895), this dissertation demonstrates that, whether politically engaged as affirmation or using sexuality as a way to communicate rejection of middle-class morality and its own fascination with the unusual, aestheticism defines itself by its inclusion of unusual sexual situations.
