A permethrin-based technology that helps prevent the spread of insect-borne diseases by repelling insects from the body through clothing, uniforms or gear. What is Permethrin? A man-made insecticide, effective against multiple species of crawling and flying insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, ants, chiggers, flies, and midges. Application The patented process is achieved by cross linking permethrin onto fabrics before manufacturing. This binding system provides a uniform application across the fabric and unprecedented durability. Overall Safety For the general public, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends use of permethrin-treated clothing when traveling to areas where they will be exposed to disease carrying insects. Product has been registered with the EPA and tested by the United States Military. Global Threat of Infectious Diseases Internationally, there is growing concern regarding insect-borne disease. Infectious diseases remain the third leading cause of death in the United States each year, and the second leading cause of death worldwide. For many of these insect-borne diseases there are no vaccines or therapeutic drugs, and preventative measures are vital for disease protection. Performance In a field trial, persons wearing permethrin-treated uniforms and 35% Deet (on exposed skin) had more than 99% protection (1 bite/hour) over eight hours, even under conditions of intense biting pressures...unprotected persons have received an average of 1188 bites/hour. The development, testing, and fielding of combat uniforms for soldiers offer acquisition professionals an opportunity to analyze how programs progress through the U.S. defense acquisition system. This case centers on the U.S. Army’s decision to change the camouflage patterns on combat uniforms and equipment for soldiers. The “image color similarity index” (ICSI) and gradient magnitude similarity deviation (GMSD) were employed to analyze color and texture differences, respectively, between background and camouflage images. Information entropy theory was used to calculate weights for each metric, yielding an overall camouflage effectiveness metric. During the analysis process, both spatial and color perceptions of the human visual system (HVS) were considered, to mimic real-world observations. Subjective tests were used to compare our proposed method with previous methods, and our results confirmed the validity of assessing camouflage effectiveness based on perceived color difference and gradient magnitude.
