The duality of such towns and the surrounding deserts, steppes and mountains is characteristic of the basic situation. Nomads dwelling in the steppes had their own social structures and their own understanding of life, which was determined by tra- ditions that spoke of forefathers and heroes of the past who had created a state with its own divine orders and laws. Although the text is well known today as the “Doṇa Sut- ta,”7 the sutta’s colophon (uddāna) lists it as the mnemonic loke (“in the world”), which comes from the phrase jāto loke saṁvaddho at its close (A 3:39,1 f); hence, it should technically be called the Loka Sutta (A 2:44,15). The colophons of the Burmese and Siamese editions, however, give doṇo as a variant read- ing.8 The untitled Chinese version, EĀ 38.3 is unique in mentioning that Doṇa (simply referred to as 彼梵 志 póluómén, “the brahmin”), after listening to the Buddha’s instructions on the five aggregates and the six internal faculties and six external sense-objects, and practising the teaching, in due course, “attained the pure Dharma-eye” (得法眼淨 dé fǎ yǎnjìng) that is, streamwinning (T2.125.718a12). -

THE LOCUS Kumbharia Is a Small Sleepy Place Nestling in the Ridges
KUiyiBHARIA - THE LOCUS Kumbharia is a small sleepy place nestling in the ridges of Aravallis as they terminate towards the south. Apart from the natural beauty that its location endows upon it, the Jaina shrines located there make it attractive and important. Culturally too the region is significant. This is the region where the two cultures Gujarati and Rajasthani meet and mingle. And Kumbharia, is in a manner of speaking, presided over by yet another trend-Jainism. It is this location, this openness to intermingling that makes the temples of Kumbharia interesting. There is a fourth dimension as well. The region comprising of Ambaji (Abu Road) and Kumbharia was known as Arasana in medieval times. This name is obviously derived from the huge marble hills in which it abounds. 'Aras' is the name by which marble is known in Gujarati. This stone w^is exported from here and almost every struc- ture of note here is built of marble-it being the locally available stone. Mythological literature offers a number of explanations regarding the origin of the name but most of them are far-fetched and there is no reason why the most logical derivation from geographical and geological peculiari- ties should be set aside. So it is a 'Land of marble' - Arasana. Fig. 1 Kumbharia, called Arasana as stated above, lies in the modem Banaskantha district of Gujarat. It is situated about 22 km. southeast of Abu Railway station on the Ajmer- Ahmedabad section of the Western Railway. From Abu Road this distance of 22 km. can be covered up by buses, taxis which ply' between Abu Road Ambaji and Ambaji Koteswar via Kumbharia temples. -

THE AJIVIKAS A Short History of their Religion ami Philosophy PART I HISTORICAL SUMMARY Introductio n The History of the Ajivikas can broadly he divided into three periods in conformity with the three main ntasres of development through which their doctrines had passed. The general facts about these periods are summed up below with a view to indicate the precise nature of the problems that confront us in the study of each. The periods and problems are as follows: — 1. PRE-MAKKIIAM PERIOD. Problems.- -The rise of a religious order of wander- ins? mendicants called the Ajlvika from a Vanaprastha or Vaikhanasa order of the hermits, hostile alike in attitude towards the religion of the Brahmans and the Vaikhanasas, bearing yet some indelible marks of the parent asrama ; a higher synthesis in the new Bhiksu order of the three or four ilsrama* of the Brahmans. 2. MAKKHAM PERIOD. Problems.— Elevation of Ajlvika religion into a philosophy of life at the hands of Makkhali 2 THE AJIVIKAS Gosala; his indebtedness to his predecessors, relations with the contemporary Sophists, and originality of conception. 3. POST-MAKKHALI PERIOD. Problems—The further development of Ajivika religion, the process of Aryan colonisation in India, the spread of Aryan culture, the final extinction of the sect resulting from gradual transformation or absorption of the Ajivika into the Digambara Jaina, the Shivaitc and others; other causes of the decline of the faith; the influence of Ajivika religion and philosophy on Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism; determination of the general character of a history of Indian religion. 1. In 1910 van Erp made an inventory of the Indo-Javanese sculptures which King Chulalongkorn of Thailand was allowed to take back to Bangkok as a memento of his extensive state visit to Indonesia in 1896. Owing to the First World War the article was not published until 1917. In 1923 and 1927 he wrote two more articles about this group of sculptures giving additional information. The piece the loss of which he most regretted was the unique dvarapala 1 of Barabudur (see PI. 1). According to van Erp this image was first noticed by an unknown visitor to Barabudur who stayed as a guest with the Resident, C. L. Hartmann, in May 1840.2 This anonymous person made the following note in his diary, which was later published in 1858 3: "A hill almost as high as that on which Boro Boedoer is situated and which rises almost immediately at its foot had for some time attracted my attention. The demang of Probolingo district, who acted as my guide, took me up this hill and told me that he wanted to show me the 'toekan' (architect) of that beautiful temple. For on the top of this hill stood a solid image of the same appearance and in the same attitude as the guardians at Prambanan but considerably smaller (i.e. -

They preached the world, known as the Dharma.
