The Armstrong Papers P6 Part I Armstrong of Moyaliffe Castle, County Tipperary University of Limerick Library and Information Services University of Limerick Special Collections The Armstrong Papers Reference Code: IE 2135 P6 Title: The Armstrong Papers Dates of Creation: 1662-1999 Level of Description: Sub-Fonds Extent and Medium: 133 boxes, 2 outsize items (2554 files) CONTEXT Name of Creator(s): The Armstrong family of Moyaliffe Castle, county Tipperary, and the related families of Maude of Lenaghan, county Fermanagh; Everard of Ratcliffe Hall, Leicestershire; Kemmis of Ballinacor, county Wicklow; Russell of Broadmead Manor, Kent; and others. Biographical History: The Armstrongs were a Scottish border clan, prominent in the service of both Scottish and English kings. Numerous and feared, the clan is said to have derived its name from a warrior who during the Battle of the Standard in 1138 lifted a fallen king onto his own horse with one arm after the king’s horse had been killed under him. In the turbulent years of the seventeenth century, many Armstrongs headed to Ireland to fight for the Royalist cause. Among them was Captain William Armstrong (c. 1630- 1695), whose father, Sir Thomas Armstrong, had been a supporter of Charles I throughout the Civil War and the Commonwealth rule, and had twice faced imprisonment in the Tower of London for his support for Charles II. When Charles II was restored to power, he favoured Captain William Armstrong with a lease of Farneybridge, county Tipperary, in 1660, and a grant of Bohercarron and other lands in county Limerick in 1666. In 1669, William was appointed Commissioner for Payroll Tax, and over the next ten years added to his holdings in the area, including the former lands of Holy Cross Abbey and the lands of Ballycahill. -

www.cranmusic.com [email protected] CRAN are a unique group in the Irish folk-music world with their highly-individualistic approach and a bewildering array of styles and repertoire. Each member of the trio already had international reputations in their own fields before the band was formed. Desi Wilkinson had become a major force in the field of Irish flute-playing, both at home and abroad; Sean Corcoran was known internationally as one of the leading singers in the Hiberno- English and Gaelic traditions and also as a researcher and teacher; Ronan Browne had not only carved out a name for himself as one of the leading lights among the younger generation of uilleann pipers but he was already giving master-classes in Europe and the U.S.A. CRAN's concert performances are a dazzling display of technical virtuosity combined with fun and humour, banter and stories. The core of their repertoire is their native Irish material - bubbling dance music or haunting slow airs on flute and pipes, and vocals ranging from the highly- ornamented sean-nós songs of Conamara to the rollicking port a'bhéil or mouth music of Donegal. Their Hiberno-English song repertoire (songs from Ireland in English) covers the entire gamut from the old story- telling "long ballads" to lively comic songs of "pure divilment and rascality". They also include material from the related Scots-Gaelic tradition and from the other Atlantic Celts, the Bretons. Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father. -

Thesis submitted for the award of M.Phil. to the Dublin Institute of Technology College of Arts and Tourism Supervisor: Dr Mark Fitzgerald Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama February 2018 i ABSTRACT Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, arrangements of Irish airs were popularly performed in Victorian drawing rooms and concert venues in both London and Dublin, the most notable publications being Thomas Moore’s collections of Irish Melodies with harmonisations by John Stephenson. Performances of Irish ballads remained popular with English audiences but the publication of Stanford’s song collection An Irish Idyll in Six Miniatures in 1901 by Boosey and Hawkes in London marks a shift to a different type of Irish song. -

O’Neill’s Waifs and Strays of Gaelic Melody This PDF document was assembled from the "abc" music transcriptions of Paul T. Kinder. His original abc files are available at http://www2.redhawk.org/irish/oneill/ I merely concatenated Paul’s abc files into a single file, converted the non−standard output from Abc2Win to standard (version 1.6) abc syntax, corrected a few minor typos, converted comments to notes and re−formatted them to fit the available page width, and created the cross−indexed PDF document. While all of that may sound very time consuming I have written software to do most of the work. The only truly time−consuming part of the conversion was adjusting the line breaks and scale to make the most of the available page space. I used my own version of abcm2ps, called jaabc2ps, to create the Postscript files that the PDF document was distilled from. Jaabc2ps is an open source program I wrote in 1999 or 2000. I hadn’t released any new versions of this program until recently when I developed the additional code to create PDF outline marks in the Postscript files. Jaabc2ps is a derived from abcm2ps which in turn was derived from the original abc2ps. Some of the features I’ve added include the capability to print tinwhistle, dulcimer, and guitar tablature; a printable index at the end of documents; and the capability to insert PDF marks for creation of cross indexed PDF link "outlines." I used James AllWright’s fine program, abc2midi, to create MIDI files of the tunes. -

Far more than its population merits, Ireland is a coun- try whose sons and daughters lead much of the world. Here in the United States men Commentary and women of Irish heritage have an enormous influence over education, politics, business, our armed forces and religious life. College presidents, chief executives, governors, senators, and other leaders are proud of their Irish heritage, and effective in their jobs. With last month’s resignation of Enda Kenny as Taoiseach and as leader of the major political party Fine Gael, Ireland is searching for new leaders while probably facing new general elections within the year. Enda Kenny is a good man; perhaps not at the top of his class when it comes to intellectual matters, but a hardworking politician with enthusiastic people skills. He was born in Castlebar, Co. MOHAWK VALLEY IRISH CULTURAL Volume 13, Issue 4 EVENTS NEWSLETTER Apr 2016 “Hel-l-o-o-o-o Central New York!” Elders Headline “An Irish Night at the Stanley” The boys – and lady -- are back! Area favorites and Great American Irish Festival perennials, the Elders, make a rare return to the area this weekend, bringing their high-energy Celtic roots show to the magnificent Stanley Theater, on Friday, April 8th; headlining “An Irish Night at the Stanley.” Kicking off the 7:30 concert will be Hair of the Dog from the Capitol District, and local favorites, the Blarney Rebel Band. Also appearing during the show will be dancers from the Butler-Sheehan Academy of Traditional Irish Dance and the Johnston School of Irish Dance. The Elders – guitarist Steve Phillips, multi-instrumentalist Brent Hoad, bassist Norm Dahlor, fiddler Diana Ladio, drummer/mandolinist Kian Byrne and indefatigable front man, Ian Byrne – captured the hearts and ears of Central New York in their first GAIF appearance in 2007, and while their lineup has seen some changes since then, their infectious energy has, if anything, gotten stronger. Since forming in 1998, The Elders have set the American music scene on its ear, thanks to a skillful mix of amped-up roots rock, augmented with powerful vocals, blazing instrumentals and top-notch song writing. Their songs are mystical, comical, political and cultural and cover a variety of topics like poverty, civil war, family bonds, spirituality, love and friendship; recounting stories of people, places and events, real and imagined. The Elders have produced seven full-length studio CDs and three live CD/DVDs, and their latest album “Story Road” cements their position as a great band at the top of their game.
