Far more than its population merits, Ireland is a coun- try whose sons and daughters lead much of the world. Here in the United States men Commentary and women of Irish heritage have an enormous influence over education, politics, business, our armed forces and religious life. College presidents, chief executives, governors, senators, and other leaders are proud of their Irish heritage, and effective in their jobs. With last month’s resignation of Enda Kenny as Taoiseach and as leader of the major political party Fine Gael, Ireland is searching for new leaders while probably facing new general elections within the year. Enda Kenny is a good man; perhaps not at the top of his class when it comes to intellectual matters, but a hardworking politician with enthusiastic people skills. He was born in Castlebar, Co. May 1 Irish Music & 2011 Bealtaine Dance Association 29th Year, Issue No. 5 The mission of the Irish Music and Dance Association is to support, coordinate, encourage and promote high quality activities and programs in Irish music, dance, and other cultural traditions within the community and to insure the continuation of those traditions. Inside this issue: 2011 Great Northern Irish Pipers' Club Tune of the Month 2 Gaelic Corner 3 Tion ól Tionol Artists 4 Odyssey to Tory Is. 7 Workshop (May 13-15) and Concert (May 14th) May Calendar 8-9 featuring An Leabhragán 10 Blackie O’Connell, Sean Gavin, Patrick DArcy Cu Ceoil 12 + surprise guests The Ceili Calendar 14 Smidirini 15 The Great Northern Irish Pipers' Club (GNIPC) will be holding its tenth tionól (uilleann pipers' gathering) this May 13th-15th in St. Paul. The tionól is a weekend crammed full of workshops and an open-to-the- public concert. To mark the special occasion of this 10th tionol, GNIPC will be bringing (from Ireland) the legendary Michael "Blackie" O'Connell. Joining Blackie will be Dubliner Pat D'Arcy (a perennial GNIPC tionól favorite!) and Chicago-based piper and flute player Sean Gavin (known to audiences for his performances with Bua and Nicgaviskey). The workshop (two days of instruction in the art and music of uilleann piping) will be aboard the Covington Inn at Harriet Island (registration available via GNIPC's website: www.gnipc.org ). The tionol workshops offer the interested and curious an intimate view of this iconic instrument and its music. Even if you don't own a set of pipes, you will find the workshops to be an occasion of fun and inspiration, an eye-opener into the original source of so much of the Irish traditional music that we cherish today. -

J. donovan SPeCIal to the BIr It seems like only yes- terday the international Irish singing and danc- ing phenomenon “River- dance” first blazed to life. Since opening in Dublin in 1995, the production has dazzled more than 25 million theatergoers across six continents. The milestone 20th An- niversary World Tour will be performing at Boston’s Citi Wang Theatre from May 10 to May 15. “Riverdance” originat- ed as a seven-minute dance number created for the 1994 Eurovision broadcast, the world’s longest-running inter- national television song competition. With a score by Limerick native Bill Whalen, the electrifying performance at Dublin’s Port Theatre was an instant hit, bringing the audience to its feet. Ironically, the extraor- dinary number was not part of the competition. Táimíd faoi chomaion ag na baill, an foireann, an bord stiúrtha agus ár lucht tacaíochta a chabhraíonn lenár spriocanna a bhaint amach. Na Píobairí Uilleann made significant progress in many areas of the Sharing the Sound Strategy 2014–2018. We are grateful to members, staff, the board and supporters who continue to help us achieve our goals. The Arts Council has confirmed our funding level of €262,750 for the period from 1st April to 31st December 2016. When the figure is annualised it represents an increase of almost 4% on the previous 12 month period and we consider this an excellent result. As always we acknowledge the efforts, commitment and teamwork of the CEO and staff at NPU, which is an essential aspect of our relationship with, and our success in securing the continued support of the Arts Council. During the year the position of Honorary President of NPU was accepted by Liam O’Flynn. This role was filled with distinction by Seán Potts from 2002 until his death in 2014. Liam was the unanimous choice of the board. -

The Arts Council has confirmed our funding level of ¤332,000 for the next twelve months to 31st March 2015. This represents a small reduction of just over 2% on the previous year and we must consider this a reasonable outcome in the current economic climate. We should acknowledge the great efforts, commitment and teamwork of the CEO and staff at NPU, which has been an important aspect of our success in securing the continued support of the Arts Council. During the year Gerry Lyons was appointed as Head of Development. This is a major step for NPU and it means that NPU now has a person dedicated to lead a fundraising drive to source funding from public and private sources to finance the development of the International Uilleann Piping Visitor Centre and Theatre at No. 16 Henrietta Street. We acknowledge the assistance of the Arts Council’s RAISE initiative in the regard. During the year NPU was successful in securing a funding award from Music Network’s Music Capital Scheme which has enabled us again to increase our Pipes-on-Loan instrument bank by a further 15 practice sets. -
