Global pay TV fragments The top 503 pay TV operators will reach 853 million subscribers from the 1.02 billion global total by 2026. The top 50 operators accounted for 64% of the world’s pay TV subscribers by end-2020, with this proportion dropping to 62% by 2026. Pay TV subscribers by operator ranking (million) 1200 1000 143 165 38 45 800 74 80 102 102 600 224 215 400 200 423 412 0 2020 2026 Top 10 11-50 51-100 101-200 201+ Excluded from report The top 50 will lose 20 million subscribers over the next five years. However, operators beyond the top 100 will gain subscribers over the same period. Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Most industries consolidate as they mature. The pay TV sector is doing the opposite – fragmenting. Most of the subscriber growth will take place in developing countries where operators are not controlled by larger corporations.” By end-2020, 13 operators had more than 10 million pay TV subscribers. China and India will continue to dominate the top pay TV operator rankings, partly as their subscriber bases climb but also due to the US operators losing subscribers. Between 2020 and 2026, 307 of the 503 operators (61%) will gain subscribers, with 13 showing no change and 183 losing subscribers (36%). In 2020, 28 pay TV operators earned more than $1 billion in revenues, but this will drop to 24 operators by 2026. The Global Pay TV Operator Forecasts report covers 503 operators with 726 platforms [132 digital cable, 116 analog cable, 279 satellite, 142 IPTV and 57 DTT] across 135 countries.

  • Engendering ASEAN Identity: the Role of Film*
ERIA-DP-2015-75 ERIA Discussion Paper Series Engendering ASEAN Identity: The Role of Film* Jose Miguel R. de la ROSA Communication and Social Marketing Expert, Philippines November 2015 Abstract: The role of film, which is used here in generic terms to include audiovisual images as well as animation, in engendering the much-sought after Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) identity is a necessary ingredient in the general framework of development leading to the realisation of the ASEAN Community. Film is an economic tool as it brings unquantifiable benefits to sectors participating in the industry. It is an effective information mechanism translating messages in more meaningful ways that appeal to the emotions. Film mirrors the cultural lives of people and reflects their heritage, values, and traditions. With the advancement in technology, film now comes in different platforms and formats, and is not confined to cinema or theatre. It becomes accessible through personal gadgets, the Internet, television (TV), cable TV, and digital versatile discs (DVDs). Thus, the reach and influence of films are vital in the people-oriented and people- centred agenda of an identity search and ensure that stakeholders down to the community level in all ASEAN member states (AMS) benefit from this approach. The ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Blueprint clearly identifies the goals and strategies that AMS should support through the multilevel mechanisms in the Committee on Culture and Information (COCI), the Senior Officials Meeting Responsible for Information (SOMRI), and the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI). This set of goals and strategies can be facilitated and implemented by collectively engaging government agencies in charge of film development in the AMS under the management of a technical expert group for this area and referred to as FILM ASEAN.

  • Bansemer: Intelligence Reform: a Question of Balance
Brig Gen Kenneth Newton Walker Kenneth Walker enlisted at Denver, Colorado, on 15 December 1917. He took flying training at Mather Field, California, getting his commission and wings in November 1918. After a tour in the Philippines, he returned to Langley Field, Virginia, in February 1925 with a subsequent assignment in December 1928 to attend the Air Corps Tactical School. Retained on the faculty as a bombardment in- structor, Walker became the epitome of the strategic thinkers at the school and coined the revolutionary airpower “creed of the bomber”: “A well-planned, well-organized and well-flown air force attack will constitute an offensive that cannot be stopped.” Following attendance at the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1933 and promotion to major, he served for three years at Hamilton Field, California, and another three years at Luke Field, Ford Island, and Wheeler Field, Hawaii. Walker returned to the United States in January 1941 as assistant chief of the Plans Division for the chief of the Air Corps in Washington, DC. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in July 1941 and colonel in March 1942. During this time, when he worked in the Operations Division of the War Department General Staff, he coauthored the air-campaign strategy known as Air War Plans Division—Plan 1, the plan for organizing, equipping, deploying, and employing the Army Air Forces to defeat Germany and Japan should the United States become embroiled in war. The authors completed this monu- mental undertaking in less than one month, just before Japan attacked Pearl Harbor—and the United States was, in fact, at war.
