Canadian Journal of Action Research Volume 14, Issue 3, 2013, pages 59-71 A REFLECTIVE SELF-INQUIRY INTO MY TEACHING PRACTICES WITH NON-ENGLISH-MAJOR TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS Chiu-Kuei Chang Chien, WuFeng University, Taiwan Kuo-Jen Yu, Nanhua University, Taiwan Lung-Chi Lin, Kao Yuan University, Taiwan ABSTRACT Action research allows teachers to evaluate and gain insight into their own practices in their teaching contexts through reflection, and inquire into ways to improve their practices and student learning outcomes. This study is a reflective self-inquiry in which the research team engages in a deliberate and retrospective analysis of the principal investigator’s teaching practices. The purpose is to identify possible factors that cause the low performance of non- major “English as a Foreign Language” students in her university English classes and propose alternative instructional practices and evaluative measures to manage their learning problems. INTRODUCTION Action research allows teachers to gain insight into their own practices in their teaching contexts through reflection and evaluation, and to inquire into methods that can help improve student practices and learning outcomes. It comprises a broad spectrum of approaches to action, change, and inquiries. One form of action research is self-reflective inquiry by which practitioners seek to solve problems, improve practices, and enhance their understanding of their own contexts (Kemmis & McTaggart, 1988; Nunan, 1992). OYO RMS, OYO, and ERS reconnaissance team members jointly presented preliminary findings at a seminar in Tokyo on October 11. RMS joined Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and members of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering (TCLEE) on October 10 in a week-long mission to further investigate power disruption and associated business interruption impacts, and collect additional loss data. Many of the team members, particularly our Taiwanese colleagues, have continued investigations of this earthquake. -

A Study of Marketing and Advertising Strategies of Academic Organizations in Taiwan Adult Learning I-Fang Wang, Assistant Professor of Applied English, Southern Taiwan University, Taiwan Guang-Han Chung, Assistant Professor of Leisure and Information Management, Taiwan Shoufu University, Taiwan Cheng-Ter Kuo, Associate Professor of Sport Management, Aletheia University, Taiwan ABSTRACT The birthrate declined, but the number of the universities increased. Many schools faced the decrease of students, and teachers had the difficulties to find jobs. Recruiting students became the big challenge for schools, especially for education program. Therefore, in order to compete effectively, ascertaining how to successfully attract and recruit students to the program has become and important part of successfully maintaining education programs. The purpose of this research was to determine what advertising strategies were effective and which marketing approach was optimal for the institution to use when promoting its education program. Moreover, the study can be used to help determine the relationship between advertising strategies, marketing approach, and the demographic profile of adult learners. This research will assist institutions in develop practical strategies for effectively recruiting adult learners to choose the respective program offered by the respective institution. Various advertising and marketing strategies were analyzed in this study. The random sampling technique was used to achieve more reliable results. The Education Marketing (Kuo, 2004) was the instrument used in this research. The t-test, the Mann-Whitney U test, the Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and the Pearson Correlation Coefficients were used to analyze the data (Frankel & Wallen, 2006). The results of the study indicated: (1) The most popular and effective advertising strategy was media advertising, followed by oral advertising, then advertising recognition. -

Overview of the International Higher Education Scholarship Program International education and training has always been one of the core operations among the TaiwanICDF’s many functions. Human resource development programs play a vital role in assisting partner countries achieve sustainable development, and education is one of the crucial mechanisms in training workforces in developing countries. When the TaiwanICDF implements any cooperation project, it pays attention to education and training for program sustainability. The TaiwanICDF does this to ensure that its work will result in tangible long-term benefits and help as many people as possible. The TaiwanICDF’s early human resource training programs consisted primarily of short- term workshops with specialized topics. These workshops focused on the most relevant and advantageous elements of Taiwan’s development, transmitting Taiwan’s successful experiences to government officials and professionals of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies. The plan to promote the TaiwanICDF Scholarship Program was first started with the intent to train agricultural professionals. This was later extended to other research fields to diversify the overall scholarship program. Consumer satisfaction and loyalty is very important for beauty SPA management. The objectives of this thesis were to pursue female consumer behavior at a beauty SPA shop such that beauty shop management can be taking right market prescriptions and marketing strategy can be profitable and sustainable. SWOT analysis for beauty SPA industry used to identify factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve management goals. Staff recruit had been identified as one of the key issues. Sampling and questionnaire had been performed and 200 effective samples had been collected. The SPSS statistical package was used for descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANAOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and principal component analysis. The main components consisting of lifestyle of consumers, consumer behavior, and promotion of beauty SPA service have been discussed. Reliability analysis with Cronbach’s alpha indicated that the three components are suitable for this study. Female consumer is more financially independent and they can decide their beauty SPA activities by their own. Promotion of beauty SPA service is a good marketing strategy as well.
