Welcome to Kaohsiung City

Kaohsiung is an international metropolis and the Ocean Capital of Taiwan, which lies off the southeastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Straits from Mainland China-a solitary island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean.

The long and continuous coastal line is the most precious natural resource of Kaohsiung, forming as it does the port culture and the unique expression of the river and the sea. Every day, cargo ships from around the globe bustle in and out of Kaohsiung Port. We has made a great effort to redevelop available space in order to cultivate a unique oceanic culture in Kaohsiung, such as, the docks and coastal scenic spots, can be developed. Furthermore, Kaohsiung clinched the opportunity to host the 2009 World Games. At that time, athletes, tourists, and the media will flock into the city and bring Kaohsiung into the global limelight.

It's hard to define the beauty of Kaohsiung. There are so many extraordinary scenes in Kaohsiung such as Tzaishan, Lotus Lake, Chichin Island, The Hawaii of Kaohsiung and so forth. Just follow your heart and you will find Kaohsiung a fascinating city whether it's at the harbor or in downtown. The thriving and colorful scenery of the Love River and the romantic love boats are the most beautiful attraction for both the people of Kaohsiung and tourists.

Kaohsiung, an industrial city, after winning over the right to host the eighth World Games in 2009, has been through from an "changing city" to a "healthy and exercise-friendly city." Under the emission reduction actions taken by the environment authorities, the unhealthy air quality days percentage (i.e., the air pollution standard index, PSI > 100) in Kaohsiung was 12% in 1998, descending annually to 7.34% in 2006. The monitoring station showed the same tendency especially for the main pollutant PM10 and O3,but we still need more stringent emission reduction actions to improve air quality.

“2007 The 5th Asian Aerosol Conference” brings together researchers from many countries to sharing knowledge and experience and demonstrating innovative ways to improve air quality. I’m glad to welcome all the practitioners to visit Kaohsiung City, and enjoy the short stay in Ocean Capital of Taiwan.

Chen Chu Kaohsiung City Mayor

Preface

Aerosol science has progressed over the last few decades into increasingly wider areas of societal relevance. Starting with study of natural phenomena, it is now playing a pivotal role in the areas of environmental health, climate and materials technology. The interconnectedness of the environmental issues transcending national barriers has given truly a global dimension to the subject. These global concerns can only be addressed by joint international ventures and international organizations. The Asian Aerosol Conferences (AACs) held under the aegis of Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA) constitute major efforts in this direction bringing together aerosol scientists from across the globe. Beginning with the first AAC in Nagoya, Japan in 1999, the successive AACs have grown in terms of the spectrum of international participation and the depth of the specialized topics covered under the conferences.

In addition to the plenary lectures which review the current status of a particular area of aerosol specialization, it has become traditional to have special tutorial sessions as part of the conference technical programme. These have attracted several students and aerosol researchers and helped them to sharpen their base in the subject. Both modes of presentations, namely, the platform and the poster, have been used effectively by the conference attendees in putting across their ideas and methodologies. With strong foundations laid by the previous four conferences, the AAC-2007 being organized by CAART at Kaohsiung, Taiwan, promises to carry forward this tradition with greater vigor.

At this juncture, I would specially like to remember Late Dr. Sheldon Friedlander who was a special keynote speaker at the 4thAAC-2005, held in Mumbai, India. It was a moment of great pride for delegates of AARA member associations to have interacted with him and witnessed his enthusiasm for aerosol science.

I take this opportunity to thank the organizers of the AAC-2007 for putting their best efforts in leading this conference to a successful finale. This pre-proceedings volume, summing up the current scenario in aerosol research, is a proof of the success of their team work.

I wish the delegates of the AAC-2007 a comfortable stay, stimulating technical deliberations and enriching experiences of the socio-cultural heritage of Taiwan. I wish the conference a big success.

Y.S. Mayya President, AARA

Preface

Hosted by the Chinese Association for Aerosol Research in Taiwan (CAART) under the auspices of the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA), the 5th Asian Aerosol Conference (AAC-2007) will be held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on August 26-29, 2007. The AAC-2007 brings together the aerosol scientists working in the field of aerosol science and technology both here in Asia and around the world. The Conference aims to focus on the problems and resolutions of aerosol related issues of major concern in the world. It is hoped that this conference will provide valuable answers to many unresolved aerosol related questions through the discussion of research and technical papers among different research groups and individuals here in Taiwan and abroad.

The Proceedings of AAC-2007 include 5 invited papers and 379 submitted abstracts arranged in 6 plenary sessions, 41 regular oral sessions, 5 special oral sessions, and 4 poster sessions. The conference program runs over three and half days, whereby the oral sessions are held with 5-6 sessions running in parallel. A total of 15 issues will be discussed during the Conference, including aerosol physics and chemistry, coarse and fine aerosols, Asian dust storm, PM in Asia, air pollution and atmospheric aerosols, aerosol sampling, aerosol measurement and instrumental analysis, global warming and atmospheric aerosols, nanoparticle synthesis and applications, indoor aerosols, bioaerosols, radioactive and nuclear aerosols, health effect of aerosols, environmental and health impact, and aerosol generation. Besides, there are two special symposiums devoted to PM Supersites and Atmospheric Observations and Advanced Measuring Techniques in the Remote Areas. Moreover, a one-day tutorial course including 3 topics is also arranged for young scientists and graduate students.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the members of the Technical Program Committee and the Local Organization Committee, who were involved in reviewing the abstracts and organizing the Conference for their time and efforts. Special thanks also go to Prof. Wen-Jhy Lee (Co-Chair of AAC-2007), Prof. Yu-Chen Chang (Secretariat of AAC-2007), Prof. Long-Full Lin (Treasurer of AAC-2007), Prof. Chitsan Lin (Chair of Student Assistance Committee), Prof. Ying-I Tsai (Chair of Exhibits Committee), and Dr. Hsun-Yu Lin (AAC-2007 Assistant) for their great contribution to the Conference.

New Books on Aerosol

uary 1, 2007 January

Title: Granular Filtration of Aerosols and Hydrosols, 2nd Edition Write: Chi Tien, B. V. Ramarao Hardcover: 512 pages Publisher: Elsevier Science (July 2007) Language: English ISBN: 1856174581

Book Description Granular filtration is a technique used extensively in the water and sewage industries, and we would all be quickly aware if it did not work properly.Designing and building an effective granular filter is a science and an art: this book covers both aspects. The theoretical basis of design is given considerable exposure, as are the behavioural characteristics of particles and fluids. This new edition contains extra material on stochastic simulations and the Lattice Bolzmann approach for studying deposition in granular media; more on prediction methods for collection efficiency; a chapter on the various available software programmes and a more industrial emphasis where appropriate.

Title: Aerosol Optics: Light Absorption and Scattering by Particles in the Atmosphere Write: Alexander Kokhanovsky Hardcover: 148 pages Publisher: Springer (March, 2008) Language: English ISBN: 3540237348

58

Book Description Springer/Praxis have a successful mini program of books on various aspects of light scattering, and now have a journal "Light Scattering Review" under consideration proposed by Alex Kokhanovsky. The atmospheric air contains not only gases but also various types of airborne particles (known as aerosols) ranging from dust grains to microbes. These small particles influence atmospheric visibility, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, and they are also of great importance in any consideration of climate change problems. Aerosols may also be responsible for the loss of harvest, health problems among humans and ecological disasters. Therefore, it is of great importance to study aerosol properties on a global scale. Such studies ultimately should be based on global observations using instruments positioned on the space platforms.

Title: Fundamentals of Air Pollution, 4th Edition

Write: Daniel Vallero Hardcover: 936 pages Publisher: Academic Press (August 2007) Language: English ISBN: 0123736153

Book Description Fundamentals of Air Pollution is an important and widely used textbook in the environmental science and engineering community. Written shortly after the passage of the seminal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, the third edition was quite timely. Surprisingly, the text has remained relevant for university professors, engineers, scientists, policy makers and students up to recent years. However, in light of the transition in the last five years from predominantly technology-based standards (maximum achievable control technologies or MACTs) to risk-based regulations and air quality standards, the text must be updated significantly. The fourth edition will be updated to include numerous MACTs which were not foreseen during the writing of the third edition, such as secondary lead (Pb) smelting, petroleum refining, aerospace manufacturing, marine vessel loading, ship building, printing and publishing, elastomer production, offsite waste operations, and polyethylene terephthalate polymer and styrene-based thermoplastic polymers production. Overall, revisions will reflect the numerous changes in the understanding of air pollution and the development of new technologies that has occurred in the past twelve years

Title: Fresh Air for Lofe: How to Win Your Unseen War Against Indoor Air

Pollution Write: Allan C. Somersall, James Marsden Hardcover: 304 pages Publisher: Natural Wellness Group (February, 2006) Language: English ISBN: 0973731710

Book Description Urgent News for all of us who really care about our health, our family, and our home sweet home! The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranked indoor air pollution among the top five most significant environmental dangers to the public. Their research concluded that indoor air can be two to ten times (and sometimes as much as 100 times!) more polluted than outside air. Dr. Somersall takes you through the "Concerns you can no Longer Ignore, the Consequences You can’t Afford."
