From Sexploitation to Canuxploitation (Representations of Gender in the Canadian ‘Slasher’ Film)

Maple Syrup Gore: From Sexploitation to Canuxploitation (Representations of Gender in the Canadian ‘Slasher’ Film) by Agnieszka Mlynarz A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Theatre Studies Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Agnieszka Mlynarz, April, 2017 ABSTRACT Maple Syrup Gore: From Sexploitation to Canuxploitation (Representations of Gender in the Canadian ‘Slasher’ Film) Agnieszka Mlynarz Advisor: University of Guelph, 2017 Professor Alan Filewod This thesis is an investigation of five Canadian genre films with female leads from the Tax Shelter era: The Pyx, Cannibal Girls, Black Christmas, Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS, and Death Weekend. It considers the complex space women occupy in the horror genre and explores if there are stylistic cultural differences in how gender is represented in Canadian horror. In examining variations in Canadian horror from other popular trends in horror cinema the thesis questions how normality is presented and wishes to differentiate Canuxploitation by defining who the threat is. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Paul Salmon and Dr. Alan Filewod. Alan, your understanding, support and above all trust in my offbeat work ethic and creative impulses has been invaluable to me over the years. Thank you. To my parents, who never once have discouraged any of my decisions surrounding my love of theatre and film, always helping me find my way back despite the tears and deep- seated fears. To the team at Black Fawn Distribution: Chad Archibald, CF Benner, Chris Giroux, and Gabriel Carrer who brought me back into the fold with open arms, hearts, and a cold beer.

Stan was a highly motivated and creative entrepreneur, who expanded the family theatre business he took over in 1960 to become one of the largest theatre chains in the world. He is credited with many innovations that transformed the movie business, most notably, the creation of the multiplex cinema and the invention of the arm-rest cup holder. Purpose-built, multiple- screen, cinema entertainment complexes became Parkway Twin Theatres, the first Multiplex, The dominant force in exhibition in the late 20th century, growing a $2B annual industry in opened in Kansas City on July 12, 1963 1975 to a $6B industry in 1997. He was a proud son of Kansas City, where AMC is based. Welcome Back - Looking Forward to a Brighter 2021 As theatres begin to re-open and the industry comes back to life, we take stock of the positive signs of what lies ahead. The movie business has been interrupted, but it is not broken. Despite the significant challenges this year, when new movies return to theatres, audiences will follow. When circumstances permit, people are going to say to themselves, “I have been stuck at home for months watching streaming, and I’m tired of that. Now I want go out with friends and family, see other people, and experience something fantastic." Macciomei: Co-optation of the American Dream Independent cinema has been an aspect of the American film industry since the inception of the art form itself. The aspects and perceptions of independent film have altered drastically over the years, but in general it can be used to describe American films produced and distributed outside of the Hollywood major studio system. But as American film history has revealed time and time again, independent studios always struggle to maintain their freedom from the Hollywood industrial complex. American independent cinema has been heavily integrated with major Hollywood studios who have attempted to tap into the niche markets present in filmgoers searching for theatrical experiences outside of the mainstream. From this, we can say that the American independent film industry has a long history of co-optation, acquisition, and the stifling of competition from the major film studios present in Hollywood, all of whom pose a threat to the autonomy that is sought after in these markets by filmmakers and film audiences.

SCMS 2011 MEDIA CITIZENSHIP • Conference Program and Screening Synopses The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans • March 10–13, 2011 • SCMS 2011 Letter from the President Welcome to New Orleans and the fabulous Ritz-Carlton Hotel! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our members, professional staff, and volunteers who have put enormous time and energy into making this conference a reality. This is my final conference as SCMS President, a position I have held for the past four years. Prior to my presidency, I served two years as President-Elect, and before that, three years as Treasurer. As I look forward to my new role as Past-President, I have begun to reflect on my near decade-long involvement with the administration of the Society. Needless to say, these years have been challenging, inspiring, and expansive. We have traveled to and met in numerous cities, including Atlanta, London, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. We celebrated our 50th anniversary as a scholarly association. We planned but unfortunately were unable to hold our 2009 conference at Josai University in Tokyo. We mourned the untimely death of our colleague and President-Elect Anne Friedberg while honoring her distinguished contributions to our field. We planned, developed, and launched our new website and have undertaken an ambitious and wide-ranging strategic planning process so as to better position SCMS to serve its members and our discipline today and in the future. At one of our first strategic planning sessions, Justin Wyatt, our gifted and hardworking consultant, asked me to explain to the Board why I had become involved with the work of the Society in the first place.

Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No

For Exhibitors October 12, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 138 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Sparked by this year’s renewed interest in independent distributors and genre films, we celebrate the creativity of American International Pictures, the pioneer of mass-production, low-budget film making. AIP was founded in 1954 as American Releasing Corporation (ARC) by Samuel Arkoff, an entertainment lawyer, and James Nicholson, a former sales manager for Realart Pictures. They soon expanded into production so they could take full control of their product, both creatively and financially. AIP developed a checklist of creative elements to ensure a film’s appeal to their target youth audience, largely overlooked by studios of the day. Their ARKOFF formula, named after the founder, included these elements: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy and Fornication. AIP would frequently bundle multiple pictures to play as double features at the nearly 4000 drive-ins (Click to Play) operating in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. One of AIP’s famously prolific and successful directors, was Roger Corman, "The Pope of Pop Cinema", who established a cult following for himself and AIP through his adaptions of Edgar Allen Poe tales as horror films. Famously, AIP’s new project development began by creating the film’s title and movie poster, which was then market-tested to confirm interest before the screenwriter, director and cast were hired. Today’s independent producers have many lessons they can learn from the film entrepreneurs
