Gojam Zone, Ethiopia (photo credit: Mewael Gebregiorgis, 2010 ) Please send inquiries and comments to: [email protected] and [email protected] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Great effort has been put forth to increase the number of people with access to safe water supply, adequate sanitation and effective hygiene in the developing world. However, the issues and factors of sustainability of these services are just as important and not documented very well. WaterAid has made an effort to address the challenges of sustainability by funding a project to improve the documentation of the conditions and status of 32 localities in which Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) schemes have been implemented throughout the Amhara Region. These 32 WaSH schemes have been investigated by using physical observation and checklist interviews conducted with communities, water user committees and woreda experts. Additional information was gathered through the review of five Cornell-BDU master theses concerning rural water supply and sanitation and their factors of sustainability. The findings showed that the idea of simple technology is not always a solution as two different communities (Kule and Awera Amba localities) have been able to manage for long period of time a borehole equipped with a diesel pump. However, they have encountered the major challenge of the high cost of fuel to run the diesel. In this study, it is shown that pumps powered by solar panesl can be an alternative technology in such cases where the sites are far from the electric grid system. The simple technologies such as hand pump fitted on hand dug well works well in areas where there is no alternative water supply sources as shown in Enbes Sar Mider locality and in areas where springs can be developed for multiple use of water (cattle trough and irrigation). The sustainability of developed water supply sources is often dependent on the existence of alternative water supply sources. In areas where there are a sufficient number of alternative sources, the strategy should be to develop the water point most preferred by the community, or to direct efforts towards household provision of water rather than a communal water point. Otherwise, the communities would not buy into the operation and maintenance since their preferred water source remains undeveloped but free of charge to use. The most common challenges observed at the study sites were (1) collected fees paid for maintenance only, (2) confusion about the management prevailed where there were different types of users and (3) conflict often raged between users and farmer who owned the land on which the scheme was constructed. In such cases, more complete community participation and awareness and implementation of multiple uses at a water scheme are better approaches and lead to potential solutions of these challenges. Finally, sanitation and hygiene practices are observed to be low. In most cases, the latrines have little or no walls or roofs and are not suitable for people who are disabled. Those households reported to have latrines are in most cases not the actual users of the latrine or the hand washing facilities. Reasons for not using latrines were found to be the additional work to dig a hole was excessive, the latrine was not able to be used during the summer due to runoff, the location at the homestead was far from the users’ agricultural land where they worked for most of the day and many more. Furthermore, it is important to evaluate the impact of current sanitation and hygiene practices on the water quality of the water sources and domestic water at individual households and on the overall health of the community. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select sample respondent households. In the first phase, three potential wheat grower districts namely, Bassona Worrana, Siyadebrna Wayu, and Moretna Jiru were selected purposively. In the second stage, six potential kebeles (lowest administrative level), two from each of the three districts were selected. In the third phase, proportionally with population size, 374 sample households were selected using simple random sampling techniques from each of the selected kebeles. Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier Production (SFP) function and inefficiency function were used to estimate the technical inefficiency level of wheat producers using a one-step maximum likelihood estimation procedure. The average productivity of wheat was found to be 32.60 quintals per hectare.

Abstract A study was conducted from November 2007 to April 2008 in Bahir Dar zuria woreda of tsetse free and Bure woreda of tsetse infested area of Amhara region of Northwest Ethiopia to investigate the prevalence of trypanosomosis in cattle. In each study area randomly selected cattle were sampled and their blood investigated using parasitological methods. The diagnostic techniques used include PCV (packed cell volume) to measure the degree of anaemia, heamatocrit centrifugation techniques (buffy coat examination) and thin smear. A total of 600 cattle (300 from Bahir Dar zuria woreda and 300 from Bure woreda) were sampled. Among them 80 cattle 45 (15%) in Bure woreda and 35 (11.66%) in Bahir Dar zuria were positive for trypano- some infection. The species of trypanosome infected during the study were Trypanosoma vivax (64%) and Trypanosoma congolense (36%) in Bure woreda but only Trypanosoma vivax (100%) were found in Bahir Dar zuria woreda. No significance difference in susceptibility was seen between male and female but significant differences in infection rate were observed between ages. Trypanosome infections were mainly due to Trypanosoma vivax and the significantly reduced the average packed cell volume and the body condition of the animals. The study revealed that trypanosomosis in cattle is an important disease in Amhara region of Northwest Ethiopia.

Abstract Khat, a lucrative cash crop cultivated in and near the Horn of Africa, is gaining the interest of researchers around the globe. Despite its potential to provide excess income, economic opportunity, and access to technology to those who produce it, the conflicting legal status around the globe causes policy and trade disputes between countries. Research on the impact of khat production on household welfare is sparse. To address this, the purpose of this research is to determine what factors affect the decision to grow khat and subsequently determine the impact of khat production on labor, income, education expenditure, and food security. Data was extracted from a survey conducted in early 2017. A total of 365 households in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia were surveyed. We estimate the factors affecting the decision to grow khat by employing use of two logit models and one linear probability model to calculate marginal effects. We estimate the impact of khat production on labor, income, education expenditure, and food security through propensity score matching. Khat production appears to be adopted by households who are educated and apt to adopt improved technologies. These households are likely to own a donkey, own irrigation, and own more plots than a non-producing household.

Information on the ethnobotany, food utilization and maintenance of barley landraces is valuable to design and plan germplasm conservation strategies as well as to improve food utilization of barley. Methods: A study, involving field visits and household interviews, was conducted in three administrative zones. Eleven districts from the three zones, five kebeles in each district and five households from each kebele were visited to gather information on the ethnobotany, the utilization of barley and how barley end-uses influence the maintenance of landrace diversity. Results: According to farmers, barley is the “king of crops” and it is put for diverse uses with more than 20 types of barley dishes and beverages reportedly prepared in the study area. The products are prepared from either boiled/roasted whole grain, raw- and roasted-milled grain, or cracked grain as main, side, ceremonial, and recuperating dishes. The various barley traditional foods have perceived qualities and health benefits by the farmers. Fifteen diverse barley landraces were reported by farmers, and the ethnobotany of the landraces reflects key quantitative and qualitative traits. Some landraces that are preferred for their culinary qualities are being marginalized due to moisture shortage and soil degradation.

Received 10 May, 2018; Accepted 31 July, 2018 This study analyzed the economic efficiency of smallholder farmers in barley production in the case of Meket district, Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. A cross sectional data collected from a sample of 123 barley producers during the 2015/2016 production season was used for the analysis. Two stages random sampling method was used to select sample respondents. The translog functional form was chosen to estimate both production and cost functions and OLS estimation method was applied to identify allocative and economic inefficiencies factors, while technical inefficiency factors were analyzed by using single stage estimation approach. The estimated stochastic production frontier model indicated input variables such as fertilizer, human labor and oxen power as significant variables that increase the quantity of barley output, while barley seed had a negative effect. The estimated mean levels of technical, allocative and economic efficiencies of the sample farmers were about 70.9, 68.6 and 48.8%, respectively which revealed the presence of a room to increase their technical, allocative and economic efficiencies level on average by 29.1, 31.4 and 51.2%, respectively with the existing resources.
