Abstract Khat, a lucrative cash crop cultivated in and near the Horn of Africa, is gaining the interest of researchers around the globe. Despite its potential to provide excess income, economic opportunity, and access to technology to those who produce it, the conflicting legal status around the globe causes policy and trade disputes between countries. Research on the impact of khat production on household welfare is sparse. To address this, the purpose of this research is to determine what factors affect the decision to grow khat and subsequently determine the impact of khat production on labor, income, education expenditure, and food security. Data was extracted from a survey conducted in early 2017. A total of 365 households in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia were surveyed. We estimate the factors affecting the decision to grow khat by employing use of two logit models and one linear probability model to calculate marginal effects. We estimate the impact of khat production on labor, income, education expenditure, and food security through propensity score matching. Khat production appears to be adopted by households who are educated and apt to adopt improved technologies. These households are likely to own a donkey, own irrigation, and own more plots than a non-producing household. Practicing seed saving, conservation techniques, and growing more crops decreases the likelihood of growing khat. Regarding impacts, khat production increases on-farm male (41.8%) and female (62.1%) labor and income (41.7%), but decreases education expense (-10.7%), food consumption scores (-15.9%), and number of food shortage months (-16.2%). Overall, khat production uses more labor, generates higher incomes, and decreases food shortage months, but decreases expenditure on education and dietary diversity. Abstract A study was conducted from November 2007 to April 2008 in Bahir Dar zuria woreda of tsetse free and Bure woreda of tsetse infested area of Amhara region of Northwest Ethiopia to investigate the prevalence of trypanosomosis in cattle. In each study area randomly selected cattle were sampled and their blood investigated using parasitological methods. The diagnostic techniques used include PCV (packed cell volume) to measure the degree of anaemia, heamatocrit centrifugation techniques (buffy coat examination) and thin smear. A total of 600 cattle (300 from Bahir Dar zuria woreda and 300 from Bure woreda) were sampled. Among them 80 cattle 45 (15%) in Bure woreda and 35 (11.66%) in Bahir Dar zuria were positive for trypano- some infection. The species of trypanosome infected during the study were Trypanosoma vivax (64%) and Trypanosoma congolense (36%) in Bure woreda but only Trypanosoma vivax (100%) were found in Bahir Dar zuria woreda. No significance difference in susceptibility was seen between male and female but significant differences in infection rate were observed between ages. Trypanosome infections were mainly due to Trypanosoma vivax and the significantly reduced the average packed cell volume and the body condition of the animals. The study revealed that trypanosomosis in cattle is an important disease in Amhara region of Northwest Ethiopia.

This disease occurs in more than 150 countries and territories and about 55,000 people die of rabies every year, mostly in developing world despite that it is preventable disease by vaccination. Ethiopia is highly endemic for rabies; yet, a nationwide data on rabies has not been gathered to reveal the actual magnitude of the problem and public awareness levels. With a conviction that a handful of works on public knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) in rabies be done to plan, execute any control and/or eradication programs, this study was conducted in Injibara town and its surroundings from November, 2015 to April, 2016 to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) on rabies and related factors. The design was: ccommunity-based retrospective, quantitative study design to assess the KAP on rabies and related factors. The entire three kebeles of the town and its surrounding rural kebeles were considered in the study.

The objective of the study was to assess the livestock production and marketing system in smallholder systems of the area Bahir Dar Zuria district. Three kebeles were selected from Bahir Dar Zuria district based on livestock production experience and accessibility to the road. A total of 90 respondent farmers were used to conduct the assessment, and 4 key informants in each Kebele were used to get additional information. Primary data were collected using a semi- structured questionnaire and supplemented with key informants and secondary data sources. Descriptive statistics such as frequency (%) and mean were employed to present the qualitative variables obtained from the survey. The average land holding in the area was 0.73 ha of total land with 0.53 ha cropland and 0.2 ha private grazing land. With regard to labor allocation for livestock, family labor was involved in 91.18% of respondents while in the rest hired labor herded, fed, and watered livestock.

The region borders Tigray in the North, Afar in the East, Oromiya in the South, Benishangul-Gumiz in the Southwest and the country of Sudan to the west [1]. Amhara is divided into 11 zones, and 140 Weredas (see map at the bottom of this page). There are about 3429 kebeles (the smallest administrative units) [1]. "Decision-making power has recently been decentralized to Weredas and thus the Weredas are responsible for all development activities in their areas." Both primary and secondary data sources for the study were collected. Primary data were collected through personal interviews from a total of 198 producers and 34 traders. Descriptive statistics was employed to describe the socio-economic characteristics of farm households, and to analyze market related data collected from maize traders. The results show that wholesalers and rural assemblers are the most important buyers of maize from producers, accounting for 44 and 36.35% respectively. Market concentration ratio of 74.07% indicates that the maize market in the study area is characterized as oligopolistic. The result of the study also showed that, maize average production and yield were 18.03 quintals per household and 34.37 quintals per hectare, respectively. The major constraints for maize production and marketing of households in the study area include high price of fertilizers, timely availability of improved seeds, large number of unlicensed traders in the markets, climate change (occurrence of drought, pest/diseases), availability of credit access and non-transparent taxation system.
