[20] "In southern Wello, there are still a few areas where indigenous trees survive in pockets of remaining forests. -- A highlight of our trip was a visit to Anabe, one of the few forests of Podocarpus, locally known as Zegba, remaining in southern Wello. -- Professor Bahru notes that Anabe was 'discovered' relatively recently, in 1978, when a forester was looking for a nursery site. In imperial days the area fell under the category of balabbat land before it was converted into a madbet of the Crown Prince. After its 'discovery' it was declared a protected forest. Anabe is some 30 kms to the west of the town of Gerba, which is on the Kombolcha-Bati road. Until recently the rough road from Gerba was completed only up to the market town of Adame, from which it took three hours' walk to the forest. A road built by local people -- with European Union funding now makes the forest accessible in a four-wheel drive vehicle. -

Box, 132, Samara, Ethiopia. 1*Email: [email protected] Article Received: 11 December 2019 Article Accepted: 07 February 2020 Article Published: 17 March 2020 ABSTRACT A cross sectional study was carried out from January to July 2014 GC in an attempt to assess and prioritize major camel diseases and identify risk factors in the selected areas of Afar region. Camel owners’ interview and retrospective data analysis were the study methods employed. Relevant collected data were organized, filtered and fed into Microsoft Excel sheet and further analyzed using SPSS statistical tools at P< 0.05. Descriptive statistics was carried to determine frequencies of camel diseases camel. Based on descriptive statistics, the study identified and prioritized 16 camel diseases. Chi-Square analysis was computed to measure the degree of association between disease occurrence and risk factors (age, sex, study area and season). Binomial and multinomial logistic regression analyzes were computed at P<0.05 to measure the significance of associated risk factors on disease occurrence. Statistically significant variations (P<0.05) were observed for sex, seasons, age, and study sites on the occurrence of disease with exception kebeles (P>0.05). Though the study duly has revealed numerous diseases of the camel, the actual existence (laboratory based confirmation) and epidemiology of each disease still demands further investigative studies. -

ETHIOPIA Food Security Outlook Update September 2013 Crops are at their normal developmental stages in most parts of the country Figure 1. Projected food security outcomes, KEY MESSAGES September 2013 • Following the mostly normal performance of the June to September Kiremt rains, most crops are at their normally expected developmental stage. A near normal Meher harvest is expected in most parts of the country. However, in places where Kiremt rains started late and in areas where some weather-related hazards occurred, some below normal production is anticipated. • Market prices of most staple cereals remain stable at their elevated levels compared to previous months, but prices are likely to fall slightly starting in October due to the expected near normal Meher production in most parts of the country, which, in turn, will also improve household-level food access from October to December. Source: FEWS NET Ethiopia • Overall, current nutritional status compared to June/July has slightly improved or remains the same with exceptions in Figure 2. Projected food security outcomes, some areas in northeastern Tigray and Amhara Regions as October to December 2013 well as some parts of East Hararghe Zone in Oromia Region. In these areas, there are indications of deteriorating nutritional status due to the well below average Belg harvest and the current absence of a green harvest from long-cycle Meher crops. CURRENT SITUATION • Cumulative Kiremt rainfall from June to September was normal to above normal and evenly distributed in all of Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR), in most parts of Amhara, in central and western parts Oromia, and in the central parts of Tigray. -

Malt barley marketing is complex and dynamic where various actors are involved in its marketing. The marketing route changes over time depending on the demands at the terminal markets. Assela Malt Factory (AMF) plays a great role in determining malt barley price while producers are price takers. Among five major malt barley marketing channels only three of them are supplying to the factory. AMF accessed to 90% of malt barley from the channel via traders and the direct supply by farmers via cooperatives was not more than 10%. The channel via cooperatives which is strategic for both producers and the factory was serving below anticipated due to the financial constraints and management skill gaps of the cooperatives. -

The objectives of this study were to estimate the current fractional cover gradient of invasive trees of the genus Prosopis in the Afar Region, Ethiopia, and to identify drivers of its invasion. We used seventeen explanatory variables describing Landsat 8 image refectance, topography, climate and landscape structures to model the current cover of Prosopis across the invaded range using the random forest (RF) algorithm. Validation of the RF algorithm confrmed high model performance with an accuracy of 92% and a Kappa-coefcient of 0.8. We found that, within 35 years after its introduction, Prosopis has invaded approximately 1.17 million ha at diferent cover levels in the Afar Region (12.3% of the surface). Normalized diference vegetation index (NDVI) and elevation showed the highest explanatory power among the 17 variables, in terms of both the invader’s overall distribution as well as areas with high cover. Villages and linear landscape structures (rivers and roads) were found to be more important drivers of future Prosopis invasion than environmental variables, such as climate and topography, suggesting that Prosopis is likely to continue spreading and increasing in abundance in the case study area if left uncontrolled. -

It is one of the areas in Ethiopia where lack of proper natural resources management is threatening unique resources. The Bale Mountains cover areas ranging from 1500 – 4377masl. The area harbors different ecological zones including moist tropical forest, afroalpine habitats, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and a large percentage of Ethiopia’s endemic plants and animals. The importance of the ecological processes of the area is significant both locally and globally. About 12 million people are estimated to be dependent on the water resources originating from the Bale Mountains. However, the rate of agricultural expansion and land degradation is highly threatening the economic and ecological potentials of this unique area. Government willingness to jointly manage natural resources with local communities, and the communities enthusiasm and capacity to work towards sustianable development are the opportunites the Bale Eco-Region Sustainable Management Programme is using to mutually enhance the unique biodiverstiy and vital ecological processes of the Bale Mountians Ecosystem.
