ABSTRACT This thesis explores emotions in the composition, circulation, popular cultural reception, and performance adaptations of Lew Wallace’s novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880) from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century in the United States. Initial mass consumption of the novel on an unprecedented scale gave way to a keen cultural desire to re-experience Wallace’s narrative, a desire that persists to this day, with a third major motion picture adaptation anticipated for release in 2016. Perpetuation of this ‘Ben-Hur phenomenon’ demonstrates the significance of Ben-Hur to the history of American receptions of ancient Rome, yet scholarship is only beginning to engage comprehensively with these texts and their functions within American popular culture. The aim of the thesis is to understand this phenomenon of cultural engagement with Ben-Hur through the lens of emotions. The centrality of audience perspectives in this study lies both in the analysis of the textual invitations for audiences’ emotional engagement, and in the survey of actual audience responses. The priority then is to evaluate subjective realms of audience interpretation within a complex interdependency of text, medium, reception context, and audience. This work thus speaks to current scholarly movements toward a greater concern for the audience’s experience of classical reception. Texts central to this project are Wallace’s novel and the performance adaptations that are directly inspired by the novel, and occur in immediate chronological succession, namely Klaw and Erlanger’s stageplay (1899-1920) and MGM’s film (1925). Textual analysis engages approaches from research in the history of emotions, and incorporates methods of reading representations of emotions specific to the media through which Ben-Hur is manifested in these texts. Evaluation of emotions in audience responses employs documentary evidence from a significant store of archival material that reveals evolving patterns of audiences’ engagement with the classical world in Ben-Hur. ! 5! ! 6! ! ! Mathiesen Introduction Until the 1980s, the community of musical scholars in general regarded film music-and especially music for the silent films-as insignificant and uninteresting. Film music, it seemed, was utili­ tarian, commercial, trite, and manipulative. Moreover, because it was film music rather than film music, it could not claim the musical integrity required of artworks worthy of study. If film music in general was denigrated, the theatre organ was regarded in serious musical circles as a particular aberration, not only because of the type of music it was intended to play but also because it represented the exact opposite of the characteristics espoused by the Orgelbewegung of the twentieth century. To make matters worse, many of the grand old motion picture theatres were torn down in the fifties and sixties, their music libraries and theatre organs sold off piecemeal or destroyed. With a few obvious exceptions (such as the installation at Radio City Music Hall in New (c) 1991 Indiana Theory Review 82 Indiana Theory Review Vol. 11 York Cityl), it became increasingly difficult to hear a theatre organ in anything like its original acoustic setting. The theatre organ might have disappeared altogether under the depredations of time and changing taste had it not been for groups of amateurs that restored and maintained some of the instruments in theatres or purchased and installed them in other locations. The American Association of Theatre Organ Enthusiasts (now American Theatre Organ Society [ATOS]) was established on 8 February 1955,2 and by 1962, there were thirteen chapters spread across the country.

Con- temporary sources discussing Louise’s career always begin with a mention of her gender, youth, and attractiveness, as though what was interesting about her was how much she looked like her sub- jects. As one journalist put it, “If you saw her walking across the lot you’d think that she was a star going from one set to the other. The glorification of heroes and heroines. Beautiful women, handsome men. Everything was larger than life. The diamonds were bigger, the furs were thicker and more. The silks, velvets, satins and chiffons, and miles of ostrich feath­ ers. Everything was an exaggeration of history, fiction and the whole wide extraordinary world. The basis was perfect designing and incredible workmanship — the cut of decolletage, the embroidery, the mounting of a skirt, and miles and miles of bugle beads. The eye travelled, the mind travelled, in a maze of perfection and imagination.
