The great morphological similarities with three other sympatric brocket deer species, coupled with the fact that they inhabit densely forested habitats complicate detection and prevent the use of traditional methodologies for accurate identification of species. The ability to determine the presence of this endangered species in an area is crucial for estimating its distribution range, and is critical for establishing conservation management strategies. Here we describe a fast and reliable noninvasive genetic method for species identification of Mazama species from faeces. We designed a primer set that amplifies a short 224-bp fragment of the cytochrome b and demonstrate its effectiveness in successful amplification of DNA isolated from both tissue and faecal samples. This fragment contains a BSTNI/ECORII digestion site that is unique to the endangered M. bororo. The digested polymerase chain reaction products yielded a 160-bp fragment that is clearly visible in a 2% agarose gel. Two other diagnostic sites were identified to differentiate the other three sympatric species, Sspl (M. gouazoubira) and Afllll (M. americana, and M. nana). Moreover, previous work suggested the pres- ence of intraspecific chromosome polymorphisms which may contribute to further population instability because of the reduced fertility arising from the deleterious effects of chromosome rearrangements during meiosis. We used G- and C-banding, and nucleolus organizer regions localization by silver-nitrate staining (Ag-NOR) to investigate the causes of this variation. Mazama nana exhibited eight different karyotypes (2n = 36 through 39 and FN = 58) result- ing from centric fusions and from inter and intraindividual variation in the number of B chromosomes (one to six). Most of the animals were heterozygous for a single fusion, suggesting one or several of the following: a) genetic in- stability in a species that has not reached its optimal karyotypic evolutionary state yet; b) negative selective pressure acting on accumulated rearrangements; and c) probable positive selection pressure for heterozygous individuals which maintains the polymorphism in the population (in contrast with the negative selection for many rearrangements within a single individual).

Diese Muster wurden mit verschiede- nen biologischen Charakteristika verknüpft und mit denen von freilebenden Tieren verglichen. Der Bre- itengrad des natürlichen Verbreitungsgebietes korreliert stark mit dem in Menschenobhut beobachteten BPB. Nur 11% der Spezies wechselten ihr reproduktives Muster zwischen Wildnis und Gefangenschaft, wobei für saisonale Spezies die errechnete Tageslichtlänge zum Zeitpunkt der Konzeption für freilebende und in Menschenobhut gehaltene Populationen gleich war. Rückschliessend ist festzuhalten, dass Photoperiodik, speziell die abso- lute Tageslichtlänge, genetisch fixierter Auslöser für die Fortpflanzung ist, und dass die Plastizität der Tragzeit unterstützend auf die erfolgreiche Verbreitung der Wiederkäuer in höheren Breitengraden wirkte. A dataset on 110 wild ruminant species kept in captivity in temperate-zone zoos was used to describe their reproductive patterns quantitatively (determining the birth peak breadth BPB as the number of days in which 80% of all births occur); then this pattern was linked to various biological characteristics, and compared with free-ranging animals. Globally, latitude of natural origin highly correlates with BPB observed in captivity, with species being more seasonal originating from higher latitudes.

Yet, information that is needed to guide managers and policy makers to develop effective conservation strategies is scarce in most of these countries. This thesis aimed to explore the impact of human activities on carnivore biodiversity inside and outside Tarangire National Park in Tanzania using camera traps, and to assess attitudes of agropastoralists towards carnivores using interviews. Results showed no significant difference in carnivore species richness between the park and communal grazing areas outside the park, but was a significantly different between the park and cultivated areas outside it.

    411 Endangered Mammals in Peru By Ian Grimwood Major Ian Grimwood spent two years, 1965-67, in Peru, through the British Ministry of Overseas Development, as wildlife adviser to the Peruvian Government. His recommendation in his report for the establishment of the Manu National Park, a 4800-square-mile area of forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes, rich in wildlife, was accepted by the Peruvian Government in March 1968, as reported in ORYX May 1968, and the FPS allocated £1000 from the FPS/WWF Revolving Fund for this park. In an appendix to his main report Major Grimwood made a survey of the status of some Peruvian mammals, from which the following extracts concerning the more endangered ones are made. The chinchilla he considers to be undoubtedly extinct now in Peru. l PERU, the conservation of terrestrial mammals is the responsibility rof the Servicio Forestal y de Caza (Forestry and Hunting), while marine mammals, including freshwater forms such as the two species of dolphins found in the Amazon tributaries, are in the care of the Servicio Pesqueria (Fisheries). In 1963, when the Servicio Forestal y de Caza came into being, there were no national parks or reserves to form sanctuaries for wild life and no regulations controlling hunting, other than a prohibition of the killing of vicunas, fur seals and sealions, and a regulation prohibiting the killing of certain Amazon basin forms, including both species of peccary and brocket deer, during the period December 1st to March 31st, which was introduced to prevent the mass slaughter of animals that became isolated on islands of high ground during the annual floods, but proved to be virtually unenforceable.

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT In addition to shedding light on underlying ecological processes, studies about animal diets are useful for guiding the design of species conservation projects. This study presents general characterizations of the diets of five neotropical ungulates, the lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris), the red brocket deer (Mazama americana), the grey brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira), the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) and the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari). In addition, a critical review of methodological procedures used in this field of ecology is presented. A number of methodological limitations were identified in this review, which may help guide future research in this field. The predominant types of studies reviewed focused on analyses of fecal matter and stomach contents. Direct observation of foraging, while difficult to implement, has revealed interactions among ungulates and other mammals that are otherwise difficult to observe. The general foraging patterns of various species and the main ecological roles of the species in the various environments where they occur were also observed. A list of plant species and families is also presented here to aid researchers and conservation practitioners in accessing resources about the main items in the ungulate diets discussed in this study. ReceivedMay 10, 1976 Few studies have been published of the chromosome structure of animals in the tribe Odocoileini (American deer) despite the great number of species in this group. Of at least 12 species (Morris 1965), only Odocoileus hemionus, O. virginianus (Wurster and Benirschke 1967) and Pudu pudu (Koulischer et al. 1972) have been analyzed in detail. Taylor et al. (1969) mention the finding of 2n=68 in a single specimen of Mazama americana obtained from the Philadelphia Zoo and kindly made this material available to us for inspection. We have recently had the opportunity to study a family of Mazama americana temama with very different results of those described by Taylor et al. (1969). More over, the new banding techniques now available allowed the identification of an unusual nonreciprocal translocation in one member of this family. This com munication describes the findings of these studies. Materials and methods The San Diego Zoo had a breeding pair of red brocket deer obtained from Tamaulipas, Mexico, whose subspecies identification was established as Mazama americana temama by Mr. Clyde Hill, Curator of Mammals. The female had a singleton male newborn who died and, a week later, the doe died as well from peritonitis. Skin biopsies of all three animals were cultured according to the technique of Basrur et al. (1963). Fibroblasts from all were preserved with glycerol in liquid nitrogen.
