  • Ll Be Your Huckleberry
I’ll Be Your Huckleberry It is amazing what will spark a memory. I was transferring a client’s film today and the Christmas scene that appeared on the screen was of a young boy who had just received an inflatable punching bag in the image of Huckleberry Hound. I had one of those. And I certainly remember Hanna-Barbera’s Huckleberry Hound being a favorite cartoon when I was growing up. But my memory played a trick on me. I would have sworn that the Huckleberry Hound Show that I watched as a youngster consisted of three segments: Huckleberry himself; Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo (whose segment eventually became more popular than those of the titular star); and (I thought) Quick Draw McGraw with his sidekick “bing bing bing” Ricochet Rabbit. But I was wrong. Quick Draw had his own show. The third segment for Huck, as he is familiarly known to his young fans, involved a pair of mice, Pixie and Dixie, and the object of their abuse, the cat Mr. Jinx. Just goes to show how memories can tend to distort and blend together over time. A few trivia tidbits about this cartoon from my past: Huckleberry Hound debuted in 1958 and featured a slow moving, slow talking blue dog who held a multitude of jobs and always seemed to succeed due to either luck or an obstinate persistence. Huck was voiced by Daws Butler who also provided the voices for Wally Gator, Yogi Bear, Quick Draw McGraw, and Snagglepuss. Daws Butler fashioned the voice of Yogi Bear after Art Carney’s portrayal of Ed Norton in The Honeymooners.

This is a re-make of the first movie. As Suneo boasts about his fossil, Nobita wants to have his own dinosaur fossil. He digs a hole to search for one, and discovers an elasmosaurus’s egg. When the egg hatches, he names it Pea-suke and nurtures it in a closet, but as it grows too big, the town slips into turmoil. Doraemon and Nobita decide to take Pea-suke back to the Cretaceous period 100 million years ago. While they are on the move in a time machine, they get chased by dinosaur hunters and they send Pea-suke by mistake to North America 100 million years ago. Nobita and Doraemon follow Pea-suke and find him there, but then, their time machine breaks down and Suneo and his friends are caught by dinosaur hunters. Doraemon and Nobita somehow manage to save them, and finally arrive in Japan 100 million years ago. What awaits them there is a flock of Futabassurus suzukii, the same species as Pea-suke.

Also Brazilian boxer Adilson Rodriguez named himself Magilla after the cartoon. The description of the character Magill Gorilla (voiced by Allan Melvin) - anthropomorphic gorilla, who spends his time languishing in the window of the pet store Melvin Peebles, eating bananas and draining the finances of the businessman. Peebles (voiced by Howard Morris and then Dock Messik) significantly reduced the price of Magilla, but Magilla was invariably bought only for a short time, usually by some thieves who needed a gorilla to break into a bank or an advertising agency, looking for a mascot for their new product. Customers always end up returning Magilla, forcing Peebles to return their money. Magilla often finished episodes with his catchphrase We'll Try Again next week. Many of Hannah-Barbera's animal characters were dressed in human accessories; Magilla Gorilla wore a bow tie, suspender shorts and an unfinished derby hat. The only client really interested in getting trouble-prone Magigly was a little girl named Ogi (voiced by Gene Vander Phil and the uttering of Oh Gee!). During the theme of the cartoon song, We have a gorilla for sale, she asks, hopefully, how much is this gorilla in the window? (turn to the old standard, (How much) Is The Dog in the window?), but she's never been able to convince her parents to let her keep Magilla.

Lockley3, Hendrik Klein4, Li-Jun Zhang5, Anthony Romilio6, W. Scott Persons IV7, Guang-Zhao Peng8, Yong Ye8 and Miao-Yan Wang2 Abstract The Jiaguan Formation and the underlying Feitianshan Formation (Lower Cretaceous) in Sichuan Province yield multiple saurischian (theropod–sauropod) dominated ichnofaunas. To date, a moderate diversity of six theropod ichnogenera has been reported, but none of these have been identified at the ichnospecies level. Thus, many morphotypes have common “generic” labels such as Grallator, Eubrontes, cf. Eubrontes or even “Eubrontes- Megalosauripus” morphotype. These morphotypes are generally more typical of the Jurassic, whereas other more distinctive theropod tracks (Minisauripus and Velociraptorichnus) are restricted to the Cretaceous. The new ichnospecies Eubrontes nobitai ichnosp nov. is distinguished from Jurassic morphotypes based on a very well- preserved trackway and represents the first-named Eubrontes ichnospecies from the Cretaceous of Asia. : Doraemon, where should we start with? : Well, let’s go back to 1969, when we started out as characters in the comic strips. : At that time we were in six children's monthly magazines, aren’t we? : Yes, and each magazine is targeted to students of the six different elementary school grades and that’s why your iconic face look different in each of the magazines. The universality of your typical life attracts many young readers. : I didn’t remember that. But I remember I stayed the same as a typical Japanese forthgrade kid throughout the fortyfive series of comic books published during 19791996. : That is because we gain popularity and our cartoonist decided to focus on fourthgrade kids. In addition to those series, five extra volumes of manga with whole new episodes were published under the title Doraemon+ . : Could you explain the word “manga”? : According to Dictionary.com, it s “a Japanese graphic novel, typically intended for adults, characterized by highly stylized art,” which implies that we are special! Ours is “gag” manga that is intended for children and the demand for this type of manga is high. : So when did we start appearing on TV? : 1979, when TV Asahi produced an anime series of Doraemon. Even more people know about our stories since our appearance on TV. Our popularity has been going up since then. : The next year we started showing the world our adventures in films, right? : Yes we started our annual animated films, which are based on the featurelength manga, since 1980.

  • Response to This Article About the Hasbro/Discovery Hub Shift In
Response to this article about the Hasbro/Discovery Hub shift in power...which turned into another my long-winded, thoughtful rants: http://online.wsj.com/articles/discovery-to-take-control-of-the-hub-network- 1410979842 Well, that's...somewhat shocking. From what I can tell, the Hasbro/Discovery partnership in The Hub has been an amazing success. I watch the channel almost every day. Most of its programming is--and has been, for the past 3.5 years--excellent. From the original series (FiM, Pound Puppies, Strawberry Shortcake, LPS, Dan Vs., Aquabats Super Show, Family Game Night, Care Bears, Transformers, Haunting Hour), to all the other wonderful shows/sitcoms (oh my goodness!! Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Goosebumps, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, Step By Step, Who's the Boss, Family Ties, The Facts of Life, Sister, Sister, Sabrina, Atomic Betty, etc.), to the extremely well-chosen family movies (I loved it when they aired the Homeward Bound films, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2...today I saw Spaceballs...and they've just made so many other great movie picks every season.) They've been an outstanding example of listening to your viewers and giving them what they want. Even their misfires and middle-of-the-road shows are more than bearable (SheZow, animated Sabrina, Teenage Fairytale Dropouts, Kid President, Parents Just Don't Understand, and such.) If Hasbro were to grow dissatisfied with controlling six hours of its toy-based cartoons daily on Hub (which seems like a fair deal they've cut, tbh), and moved them over to Cartoon Network or Disney...well, at least the shows would still continue on, and be a MASSIVE boon to either of those channels.
