Jim Cummings (Jellystone!, 2020-present) In the Universe informationSpeciesWestern lowland gorillaGenderMale Magilla Magilla Gorilla is a fictional gorilla and star of the Magilla Gorilla Show Hannah-Barbera, which aired from 1964 to 1965. Also Brazilian boxer Adilson Rodriguez named himself Magilla after the cartoon. The description of the character Magill Gorilla (voiced by Allan Melvin) - anthropomorphic gorilla, who spends his time languishing in the window of the pet store Melvin Peebles, eating bananas and draining the finances of the businessman. Peebles (voiced by Howard Morris and then Dock Messik) significantly reduced the price of Magilla, but Magilla was invariably bought only for a short time, usually by some thieves who needed a gorilla to break into a bank or an advertising agency, looking for a mascot for their new product. Customers always end up returning Magilla, forcing Peebles to return their money. Magilla often finished episodes with his catchphrase We'll Try Again next week. Many of Hannah-Barbera's animal characters were dressed in human accessories; Magilla Gorilla wore a bow tie, suspender shorts and an unfinished derby hat. The only client really interested in getting trouble-prone Magigly was a little girl named Ogi (voiced by Gene Vander Phil and the uttering of Oh Gee!). During the theme of the cartoon song, We have a gorilla for sale, she asks, hopefully, how much is this gorilla in the window? (turn to the old standard, (How much) Is The Dog in the window?), but she's never been able to convince her parents to let her keep Magilla. In Yiddish, megilla is a long tedious or embroidered account, from Hebrew megillah, a story written in a scroll. In one episode, Magilla says: Such a megilla over a gorilla. Brazilian world boxing champion Adilson Rodriguez received, accepted and recognized by the public as Maguila, in reference to the cartoon. Patricia Highsmith died in 1995 and her fiction has grown in popularity not only with readers, but with filmmakers. Since the director Alfred Hitchcock adapted Strangers on a Train in 1951, more than thirty of her novels have been made into films. The adaptation from one medium into another is an abstract process, particularly when novels are as psychologically dependent as Highsmith’s. In this paper, I examine the cinematic strategies experienced filmmakers have used to adapt Highsmith’s psychological content into a visual medium and discuss their level of success. The creative component of my application is the feature film screenplay, “Friendly Fire”, in which I make use of the same ‘psychological uncertainty’ found in Highsmith’s fiction.

  • The Musical Number and the Sitcom
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

  • Peter Cullen and Frank Welker Are More Than Meets the Eye
Peter Cullen and Frank Welker Are More Than Meets the Eye Few cartoons and actions figures are as iconic, popular and recognizable as Transformers. Whether you grew up with the ’80s TV series, the original 1988 film or even the current blockbuster franchise, you most likely know the difference between an Autobot and a Decepticon. The original voices behind the eternal foes Optimus Prime and Megatron, Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, each have been doing voice work for over 50 years, and I was excited to talk with them in advance of their appearance at RI Comic Con. Rob Duguay (Motif): When you were approached to do the voices for the Transformers cartoon in the ’80s, what was your reaction? Peter Cullen: I remember being very curious about it. It was so new, so different from anything I had ever done or seen before. That is because there were no cute funny characters of all sorts of voice ranges, but simply an assortment of metal robots that fought for good or evil. It was more real life than cartoons. I was asked to read a few characters including Prime, and that opportunity proved to be a once in a lifetime. The words were perfect, some advice from my brother Larry — who is also a personal hero of mine — and the rest is history. Frank Welker: I was not familiar with the franchise at all, but loved the characters and the art. They were different than anything I was working on at the time. It was fun to play so many characters and of course I had the opportunity to be the big bad boy and I loved doing him and still do.

  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.
