Peter Cullen and Frank Welker Are More Than Meets the Eye Few cartoons and actions figures are as iconic, popular and recognizable as Transformers. Whether you grew up with the ’80s TV series, the original 1988 film or even the current blockbuster franchise, you most likely know the difference between an Autobot and a Decepticon. The original voices behind the eternal foes Optimus Prime and Megatron, Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, each have been doing voice work for over 50 years, and I was excited to talk with them in advance of their appearance at RI Comic Con. Rob Duguay (Motif): When you were approached to do the voices for the Transformers cartoon in the ’80s, what was your reaction? Peter Cullen: I remember being very curious about it. It was so new, so different from anything I had ever done or seen before. That is because there were no cute funny characters of all sorts of voice ranges, but simply an assortment of metal robots that fought for good or evil. It was more real life than cartoons. I was asked to read a few characters including Prime, and that opportunity proved to be a once in a lifetime. The words were perfect, some advice from my brother Larry — who is also a personal hero of mine — and the rest is history. Frank Welker: I was not familiar with the franchise at all, but loved the characters and the art. They were different than anything I was working on at the time. It was fun to play so many characters and of course I had the opportunity to be the big bad boy and I loved doing him and still do. -

Annual Report 2014 Fueling the LGBT Movement Letter from the Board Chair & Executive Director This report is about 2014. Yet as this letter is written in 2015, it’s impossible not to start by recognizing the spectacular recent progress of the movement for the rights and dignity of LGBT people: the move to eliminate the ban on transgender people serving in the military; the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruling that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is illegal; and, of course, the grand marriage victory at the Supreme Court. As we celebrate this dramatic progress, we all know that it comes out of the passion and sacrifices of countless people and the unflagging work of thousands of nonprofit groups, large and small. A relative few make headlines or become well known, but it is the many – not just the few – who make social change happen. These triumphs belong to all of us. Horizons Foundation has had the great privilege of not only being part of many of these historic events, but helping to shape and fuel them. The foundation has been there early. It’s been there often. It’s been there again and again and again. Our first grant for work on LGBT marriage equality, for example, goes back nearly two decades. Our first grant in support of transgender rights happened nearly as long ago. Horizons made the first grant anywhere to fight HIV. As this report relates, the year 2014 – the foundation’s 34th year – built on this powerful legacy. We are especially glad to share the remarkable list of grants made to organizations in every part of the LGBT community, as well as indicators of strong financial growth. -

Another argument is that conservatives are shunned in the industry. [1] For example, Vin Di Bona, a producer responsible for many hit television shows, agreed during an interview with Shapiro that Hollywood promotes a liberal political agenda, commenting, "I'm happy about it, actually." Di Bona also said that MacGyver , the cult hit show on which he was a producer, promoted an anti-gun movement position, as the character of MacGyver does not use a gun, but rather his own intelligence. People involved with television shows M*A*S*H and Happy Days told Shapiro that they possessed pacifistic and anti-Vietnam War agendas. [2] Another example is the television show Sesame Street which is accused of deliberately spreading left-wing propaganda to children. [3] Producer Leonard Goldberg stated to Shapiro that in the industry liberalism is "100 percent dominant, and anyone who denies it is kidding, or not telling the truth", and when Shapiro asked if politics are a barrier to entry replied, "Absolutely". -

Peebles (voiced by Howard Morris and then Dock Messik) significantly reduced the price of Magilla, but Magilla was invariably bought only for a short time, usually by some thieves who needed a gorilla to break into a bank or an advertising agency, looking for a mascot for their new product. Customers always end up returning Magilla, forcing Peebles to return their money. Magilla often finished episodes with his catchphrase We'll Try Again next week. Many of Hannah-Barbera's animal characters were dressed in human accessories; Magilla Gorilla wore a bow tie, suspender shorts and an unfinished derby hat. The only client really interested in getting trouble-prone Magigly was a little girl named Ogi (voiced by Gene Vander Phil and the uttering of Oh Gee!). During the theme of the cartoon song, We have a gorilla for sale, she asks, hopefully, how much is this gorilla in the window? (turn to the old standard, (How much) Is The Dog in the window?), but she's never been able to convince her parents to let her keep Magilla. -
Our Local Is Growing, and Has Been Doing So Steadily for the Past Few Years
ANIMATION GUILD AND AFFILIATED ELECTRONIC AND GRAPHIC ARTS Los Angeles, California, September 2020 Vol. 49, No9 Our Local is growing, and has been doing so steadily for the past few years. We’ve got almost 6000 active, dues paying members on the books right now, and the majority are busier than ever as the animation sector does the heavy lifting in an entertainment industry that has been devastated by a global pandemic. But it’s not easy to keep in touch while we’re all working from home. When we don’t see each other at the studios, we miss out on casual chats in the break area and quick greetings in the halls. We forget that we’re not the only ones struggling to keep a normal schedule when there are emails coming in at all hours and kids that need attention whether we’re busy at work or not. And because we’re apart, the community feeling we experience when we’re working together seems very far away. That makes it more important than ever for all of us to fi nd new ways to stay in touch and keep our Animation Guild community strong and connected.
