Alain SUBERCHICOT, Professeur, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 1 Résumé Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) et Eileen Chang (1920-1995), deux écrivaines du 20e siècle, ont des sources spécifiques d’inspiration : Duras, née en Indochine ; Chang, née à Shanghai. Enfance et expérience familiale constituent l’arrière-plan de la plupart de leurs œuvres. Les mondes que décrivent ces œuvres sont, en conséquence, définies par la douleur et par la souffrance – soit personnelle, soit collective. Le thème familial l’emporte dans les romans de chacun des écrivains. Il permet d’offrir une lecture psychanalytique de bien des romans des deux écrivains, et de les commenter selon le roman familial qui caractérise Duras et Chang. Mais l’enfant et les secrets de la famille, l’importance de l’image de la mère, ne sont pas le seul arrière-plan de l’œuvre de Duras et de Chang. Les deux écrivaines sont conscientes des conditions sociales et politiques qui prévalent et de la situation des femmes. En conséquence, une lecture psychanalytique des deux écrivaines ne doit pas ignorer ces conditions et la lucidité de chacune des écrivaines. Il doit rendre compte du lien entre l’histoire familiale et l’aptitude des deux écrivaines à traiter de questions plus larges. Mots clés : Marguerite Duras, Eileen Chang, écriture, famille, psychanalyse 2 Abstract Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) and Eileen Chang (1920-1995), two women writers of the 20th century show specific sources for their inspiration : Duras – was from Indochina, and Chang – was from Shanghai; childhood and family experiences offer the background of most of their works. The worlds they describe are consequently defined by pain and suffering – either individual or collective. The family theme prevails in the works of both writers. It allows to offer a psychoanalytic reading of many of their novels of each writer, and to comment them by reference to the family romance which characterizes Duras and Chang. But childhood, family secrets, importance of the mother image, etc., are not the only background of Duras and Chang’s works. Both writers were fully aware of the political and social conditions which prevailed, and of the women’s situation. Consequently, the psychoanalytic reading of both writers should not neglect these conditions and the lucidity of both writers. This reading should account for the connection between the family history of both writers and their ability to address broader issues. Fragments of a Female Self in Zhang Ailing’s Love In a Fallen City (倾城之恋) Alessandra Di Muzio Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia Abstract This article examines wreckage and war as key elements in Zhang Ailing’s novella Qing cheng zhi lian 倾城之恋 (Love in a Fallen City) exploring the strategies used by the female protagonist to engage on a nüxing 女性 ‘feminist’-oriented spatial quest for independence in a male-centered world. Analysed from a feminist perspective, these strategies emerge as potentially empowering and based on the idea of conflict/con- quest while dealing with man and romance, but they are also constantly threatened by the instability of history and by the lack of any true agency and gender-specific space for women in the 1940s Chinese society and culture. By analysing the floating/stability dichotomy and the spatial configurations of Shanghai and Hong Kong as described in the novella, the author argues Zhang Ailing’s depiction of Chinese women while dealing with history, society and the quest for self-affirmation is left in-between wreckage and survival, oppression and feminism, revealing her eccentric otherness as a woman and as a writer with respect to socially committed literature. Ihr gehören auch Stanley Kwan, Fruit Chan, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam und Tsui Hark an, deren Filme auf internationalen Festivals laufen und liefen. Im Westen sind ihre Filme in der Literatur kaum rezipiert worden – und das will der vorliegende Band ändern. Neben Wong Kar-wai ist Stanley Kwan einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der New Wave, jener Nouvelle Vague des Hongkong-Kinos, die ihren künstlerischen und politischen Anspruch aus den Wirren der 1980er und 1990er Jahre zieht, als klar wurde, dass die Kronkolonie im Jahr 1997 von Großbritannien an die Volksrepublik China zurückgehen würde. This thesis seeks to address this problem by first exploring the connections between these two prominent Shanghai authors on three levels - personal, historical/cultural, and literary - and then examining how they portray romance and urban modernity in some of their pieces. In addition to Zhang Ailing’s extensive translation work on Han Bangqing’s Sing-song Girls of Shanghai, translating it first into Mandarin Chinese from the Wu dialect and then into English, a central connection between these two authors is the preeminent position of Shanghai in their writings. This thesis examines the culture and history of Shanghai and how it affected both writers.

The conclusion is that the author-translator’s adoption of amplification and omission serves for the construction of asymmetrical power relationships, which has negative influence on cultural communication based upon equality between the west and the east. Index Terms—Eileen Chang, Chinese-English self-translation, amplification and omission, critical discourse analysis Eileen Chang was a legendary writer in Chinese literature history in 20th century but few people know that she is also an excellent translator. She has translated many English novels including Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea and some of her own works. In recent years, the research on Eileen Chang is very hot whereas the research on her translation, especially on her self-translation is limited. It is easy for us to take for granted that it should be the most faithful that the author translates his/her own works.

Introduction USIS, short for United States Information Service, is an organization established in HK by US Consulate General during the Cold War for "anti-CPC propaganda" and US policy promotion. Main methods for USIS to promote American culture include paying more remuneration than the local media, recruiting famous Taiwan and Hong Kong scholars to translate "Masterpieces of American literature" or buying out writers' copyright with "sky-high price" to foster anti-Communist propaganda work creation.

By discussinG urban narrative structures and cinematic imaGinations as evidenced in a dozen of key literary and filmic texts, this class aims to offer a new understandinG of Chinese modernity as marked by its unique urban sensibilities and confiGurations. ReadinGs of marGinal writinG, popular culture, and underGround cinemas are also included in the class. The main issues to be discussed are urban awareness, historical consciousness, individual/collective memories, and nationalist perceptions reGardinG the old and new capital BeijinG, the semi-colonial metropolis ShanGhai and its remnants, the “raped” and traumatized NanjinG, the “abandoned” capital Xi’an, the British Crown Colony HonG KonG, and Taipei under Japanese colonial rule and the subsequent Nationalist Party’s dominance. Requirements and Grading: 1) Attendance, Participation, Sakai posting and Oral presentation (40%): Since this class emphasizes focused discussions of each week’s readings, it is essential that students come to class havinG read all of the assiGned materials carefully and prepared to engage actively in the discussion. Students should bring a copy of each week’s readings. Regular attendance is thus expected. If an absence is unavoidable, the student must consult with the instructor beforehand and make-up work will be assigned. For each week’s readinGs, students will be designated to post a readinG response (approximately 300-400 words) by midniGht three days before each sessions starts.
