Q: Do volunteer liquor servers require RSA certification? A: The Act requires those employed in the service of alcohol to have undergone RSA training. In the case of unpaid volunteers RSA training is not strictly required but is strongly encouraged. Poker Tournaments and Gaming Premises

It has come to the attention of the Tasmanian Gaming Commission that some of the poker tournaments being conducted around the state may be occurring in the restricted gaming area of hotels/clubs that hold a Licensed Premises Gaming Licence for the operation of electronic gaming machines. Tasmanian Gaming Commission Rules 2.1 and 2.3 state: GAMING MACHINE AREA 2.1 A Restricted Gaming Area must be physically discrete and separated from other areas of the Licensed Premises. 2.3 Pool tables, bingo ticket machines, machines commonly known as “arcade amusement machines” and any gaming equipment which is not of a type approved by the Tasmanian Gaming Commission under the Gaming Control Act 1993 must not be placed or operated within a Restricted Gaming Area.

The Commission may take disciplinary action against the Licensed Premises Gaming Licence holder if it discovers either a poker tournament being conducted or poker tournament equipment located within a restricted gaming area. Provided the game of poker is played with no entry fee and no money changing hands between participants it can be conducted in any premises however those premises with licensed gaming areas must ensure they comply with the requirements as detailed above.
