Federal Group purchased the Wrest Point Riveria Hotel in 1956 and opened Australia’s first legal casino on the site in 1973. In 1982, Federal Group opened Country Club Tasmania, the world’s first integrated casino-resort, in Prospect Vale just outside Launceston. The company has grown to become Tasmania’s leading tourism and hospitality operator, with award-winning hotels MACq 01, Saffire Freycinetand Henry Jones. Federal Group also owns Vantage Group which has 12 community hotels across Tasmania and 20 9/11 Bottleshop retail liquor stores. While each business has its own iconic brand, together they represent the very best of Tasmanian entertainment, hospitality and tourism, and operate collectively as Federal Group Tasmania. Federal Group Tasmania employs almost 2000 people and a 2016 report by Deloitte Access Economics found the company contributed more than $343.12 million directly and indirectly to the state economy during 2015-16. The company proudly employs people across the state and its diverse team is made up of trainees and apprentices, visa holders, specialists, technicians, graduates, subject experts, new migrants and students. Hobart was originally founded in 1803 as a penal colony and now is home to approximately 250,000 people. Geographically, Hobart is Australia’s most Southern Capital city and arguably our most attractive with Mount Wellington (1,271 M) classically forming the backdrop and the Derwent River in the foreground of many photographs like the one above. The Derwent River is often thought of by Australians as the end of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, but it is also one of Australia’s great rivers with a mean flow rate of 90 cubic metres of water per second. The river originates from Lake St Claire in the central highlands and flows over 187 km to New Norfolk. From this point on (another 52 km) is the estuary portion of the river that extends to the sea and offers one of Australia’s finest deep water shipping ports. Hobart is internationally recognized as a major gateway to Antarctica and is also the home of The Australian Antarctic Division. It is also home to a number of internationally recognized brands such as Cascade Breweries, Cadbury Chocolates and Incat high speed catamarans. It is surrounded by excellent wineries particularly renowned for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines and is home to a working distillery.

SIMPSON (Serpentine-Jarrahdale) [11.50 am]: In continuing my contribution to the second reading debate on the Casino (Burswood Island) Agreement Amendment Bill 2007, I would like to set the record straight. Some members have referred to my anti-gambling stance. I am not anti-gambling, but I believe that we must take a role in protecting people from the ills of gambling. Last night after Parliament rose, I had the opportunity, along with the member for Alfred Cove, to visit Burswood Casino. We met with Michael Egan, Pam and Lauren. Pam is a social worker and Lauren is a psychologist and they work for the Burswood Casino. They took us through their responsible gambling program. It is a very good system. This bill is about increasing the funding that comes from Burswood Casino for the maintenance of the Swan River. I will provide members with some information on Australia’s casinos. Australia’s first casino opened in Tasmania in 1973. The opening of Wrest Point Hotel Casino on 10 February 1973 in Hobart marked the beginning of massive expansion of Australia’s gambling industry. The development of a casino was the subject of a referendum conducted before an act of Parliament was passed in 1968. The referendum proposal was successful by a slim majority, with 53 per cent of voters in favour of the development.

    TASMANIAN LIQUOR AND GAMING COMMISSION PREMIUM PLAYER PROGRAM RULES Effective 1 August 2016 Trim Ref 16/158912 Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission 1 PRELIMINARY 1.1 These Rules apply to the conduct of a Premium Player Program (PPP) in any casino operating under a Casino Licence (Licence) issued under section 13 of the Gaming Control Act 1993 (the Act). 1.2 These Rules are in addition to the requirements of the Act and any conditions imposed on the Licence by the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission and must be read in conjunction with the “Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission Casino Licence Rules” as issued by the Commission from time to time. 1.3 Where any of these Rules conflicts with a Rule contained within the “Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission Casino Licence Rules”, these Rules will prevail in relation to PPP related matters. For the avoidance of doubt, the following Rules will not apply to the conduct of a PPP – “Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission Casino Licence Rules” 2.5, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 9.2, 9.4, 9.5, 9.6, 9.7, 10.1(c), 10.1(e), 10.1(i), 10.1(l) and 11.1. 1.4 A casino operator and their employees (including special employees) must adhere to these Rules. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in disciplinary action against the casino operator or special employee. Disciplinary action may include a letter of censure, a fine, and/or the suspension, cancellation or amendment of a licence. 1.5 A casino operator must ensure that a copy of these Rules is available for free public inspection and must ensure that they are enforced or caused to be enforced at all times.

(Bill) WILLIAMS 1945-66 BRIAN LEWIS 1967-97 FOREWORD IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES an effort has been made to collate the records of the Sandy Bay Football Club from its inception, and renew acquaintances with all the great players who have worn the Club’s Blue and White Guernsey. Months of research have resulted in the compilation of this comprehensive record, and if perchance some name or names or facts have been omitted the writers offers their apologies. During the years of the Second World War and particularly 1942-43 seeds were sown for the introduction of district football in Hobart and sub- urbs. Many were sceptical of the success, but it was obvious that now was the time to implement the scheme if district football was to succeed. The big barrier was the breaking of old club ties, but with the suspension of League football during the war years and the retirement of most of the pre- war champions the powers that be decided in favour of the new scheme. In 1945 we saw four district Clubs provide the football namely Sandy Bay, North Hobart, New Town and Hobart. In 1947 Clarence and New Norfolk were admitted to the competition. The teams remained unchanged until 1986 when East and North Launceston were admitted. In 1987 the Burnie Hawks and the Devonport Blues were also admitted to form a Statewide League. The number of teams remained the same until the 1994 season when Launceston was admitted, thus creating a bye. No further change occurred until 1997 when all teams handed in their licenses and unfortu- nately the rest is history.
