This indicates not only the museum’s burgeoning interest in other cultural forms but the acceptance of fashion photography into specific art contexts. This thesis examines two recent exhibitions of contemporary fashion photography: “Fashioning Fiction in Photography Since 1990” at the Museum of Modern Art (April 16- June 28, 2004), the first exhibition of fashion photography at a major North American museum of art, and “Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now” at the International Center of Photography (January 16, 2009-May 3, 2009).

  • Genderqueer Fashion Models and Their Representations of Gender in Visual Culture
GENDERQUEER FASHION MODELS AND THEIR REPRESENTATIONS OF GENDER IN VISUAL CULTURE. Anna Germaine Hickey BCI Visual Art, Hons. Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Fashion) School of Design Queensland University of Technology 2019 Keywords Fashion models Cultural intermediaries Fashion Gender Queer Genderqueer fashion models Transgender fashion models Andreja Pejić Casey Legler Hari Nef Richie Shazam Khan Genderqueer fashion models and their representations of gender in visual culture. i Abstract The rise and success oF genderqueer Fashion models in the twenty- first century indicates wider sociopolitical movements that promote equality For members oF genderqueer communities. Many high-profile genderqueer Fashion models build their careers on their gender identity and are vocal on gender rights issues, which gives them a political identity. However, these models also embody key tensions in contemporary gender discourse, as their queer identities are both made visible and commodiFied through Fashion modelling. For example, while their queer identities challenge persistent associations between cisnormative femininity and beauty, these models have also been criticised for reinforcing heteronormative beauty ideals. And while including genderqueer fashion models is widely interpreted as heralding a more socially inclusive industry, their presence might also be read as a passing trend. Drawing on Judith Butler’s ([1990] 1999) notion of ‘troubling gender’ and Pierre Bourdieu’s (1984) notion of ‘cultural intermediation’, this project examines the contemporary genderqueer fashion model by analysing fashion editorials, commercial endorsements, artistic outputs and journalistic coverage. Specifically, it focuses on the ways in which four models—Andreja Pejić, Hari Nef, Casey Legler and Richie Shazam Khan—construct and communicate contemporary notions of gender via their work in the Fashion-modelling industry.

  • Equinox Unveils “Make Yourself a Gift to the World”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE EQUINOX UNVEILS “MAKE YOURSELF A GIFT TO THE WORLD” CAMPAIGN Film directed by Floria Sigismondi and photography by Glen Luchford - champions physical, emotional and spiritual well-being NEW YORK, NEW YORK (January 6, 2020) — Equinox, the global high-performance lifestyle leader, today unveiled its 2020 brand campaign “Make Yourself a Gift to the World,” a celebration and exploration of the positive effects that come from a deep devotion to oneself. Campaign stills, shot by iconic fashion photographer Glen Luchford and an accompanying film directed by world-renowned creative Floria Sigismondi, will roll out in the U.S., Canada and London with print, digital, social, out of home and video components. Equinox, renowned for its bold, thought-provoking campaigns that channel the collective mindset, explores the theme of healthy self-obsession to provide a fresh take on a concept already central to its mission of empowering a life well lived. This year, the brand challenges people to commit to becoming the best version of themselves through self-devotion, and in so doing, become a better person, better friend, better partner — improving the world around them. “Year after year, we see the brand campaign as our opportunity to lead with a strong point of view and communicate a universal truth that is relevant to our community and reflects what’s happening in culture,” said Seth Solomons, Chief Marketing Officer of Equinox. “Our message this year, delivered in a playful, tongue-in- cheek way, is a statement about the benefits of being your best self for the benefit of others, turning the idea of self- obsession on its head.” Through the lens of Luchford for campaign stills and eyes of Sigismondi for the accompanying film, the new campaign, developed in partnership with creative agency Droga5, creates a rich visual world that promotes unwavering devotion to oneself.

  • O Conceito Genderfluid Nas Campanhas Publicitárias Da Gucci 1

  • Icons of Style: a Century of Fashion Photography
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ANNOUNCING PUBLICATION OF: ICONS OF STYLE: A CENTURY OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL MARTINEAU WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY ELIZABETH ANNE MCCAULEY, IVAN SHAW, SUSANNA BROWN, AND MICHAL RAZ-RUSSO GETTY PUBLICATIONS / JULY 10, 2018 Publication Coincides with an Accompanying Exhibition On View June 26–October 21, 2018 at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Center, Los Angeles ________________________________________________________________________________________________ In 1911, the French publisher Lucien Vogel challenged Edward Steichen to create the first artistic, rather than merely documentary, fashion photographs, a moment that is now considered to be a turning point in the history of fashion photography. As fashion changed over the next century, so did the photography of fashion. Steichen’s modernist approach was forthright and visually arresting. In the 1930s, the photographer Martin Munkácsi pioneered a gritty, photojournalistic style. In the 1960s, Richard Avedon encouraged his models to express their personalities by smiling and laughing and Helmut Newton brought an explosion of sexuality into fashion images, turning the tables on traditional gender stereotypes. In the 1970s and 1980s, Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts made male sexuality an important part of fashion photography. Today, following the integration of digital technology, teams like Inez & Vindoodh and Mert & Marcus are reshaping our notion of what is acceptable—not just aesthetically but technically and conceptually—in a fashion photograph. From glossy pages in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar to framed prints on museum walls, fashion photography encompasses both commercial advertising and fine art.
