In the 1940s and 50s Rodríguez reorganized the son conjunto (‘son group’) and developed the son montuno, the basic template of modern-day salsa. He claimed to be the true creator of the mambo and was an important as well as a prolific composer who wrote nearly two hundred song lyrics.Early lifeRodríguez was born in Güira de Macurije in Bolondrón, Matanzas Province as the third of fifteen children, fourteen boys and one girl.As a young child, Rodríguez was blinded when a horse (or a mule) kicked him in the head.Rise to FameLater, Rodríguez became a musician, and eventually became one of the most renowned bandleaders on the island earning him the nickname El Ciego Maravilloso (the Marvellous Blind Man). His music emphasized Afro-Cuban rhythm as well as the melodic lead of the tres, which he played. In 1936 he played his own compositions with the Sexteto Boston, led by his cousin Jacinto Scull. • Oye Como Va!: Hybridity and Identity in Latino Popular Music
1 Introduction Hybridity, Identity, and Latino Popular Music ye Como Va! I selected this phrase as the main title for this book because of its exhortation to pay attention, in this instance, to the O sonic spaces that surround us and, in particular, to the rich mixture of sounds produced and consumed by U.S. Latinos. Translated as “Listen to what’s going on!” or “Listen to how it goes!”—but more succinctly as “Listen up!”—this phrase is the title of the famous song composed by the Puerto Rican mambo and salsa bandleader/percussionist Tito Puente in 1963. A veteran of New York’s glorious Latin music boom in the 1940s and 1950s, Puente borrowed the signature introduction of “Oye Como Va!” from an older piece called “Chanchullo,” composed by the Afro-Cuban bassist Israel “Cachao” López; the rest of the composition, a cha-cha, was original. Puente may not have imagined his song as being anything other than Spanish Carib- bean, but, despite its stylistic grounding in Cuba, its composer was born in New York City, raised in a multiethnic U.S. metropolis, and surrounded by an array of Latin and non-Latin styles. In 1970, a rock version of “Oye Como Va!” recorded by Carlos Santana hit number 13 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart. Unlike the U.S.-born Puente, San- tana was an immigrant, born in Mexico and raised in Tijuana before moving to San Francisco with his parents when he was an adolescent. In reconfigur- ing Puente’s cha-cha, Santana filtered Puente’s Spanish Caribbean sensibili- ties through his own deep knowledge of U.S.

Online-Publikationen des Arbeitskreis Studium Populärer Musik e.V. (ASPM) Hg. v.

  • 'Lost and Found' by Buena Vista Social Club Musician Biographies
‘Lost and Found’ by Buena Vista Social Club Musician Biographies Angá Díaz, congas (born Pinar del Rio 1961, died 2006) With his explosive soloing and inventive five conga patterns, Cuban musician Miguel ‘Angá’ Díaz was one of the world’s great congueros. Anga’s musical journey has led to him perform with the foremost experimental band in Cuba, Irakere, sojourns with innovative US jazz musicians Steve Coleman & Roy Hargrove, then back to his roots with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Rubén González, and opening doors with the great Cuban bassist Cachaíto López on his ground-breaking album ‘Cachaíto’ and subsequent tour – Anga developed upon the basis of that album on his debut release ‘Echu Mingua’ – a unique and experimental take on classics of Cuban and Jazz repertoire, original African, DJ, contemporary Argentine, and improvised music. Angá unexpectedly died of a heart attack in 2006. Ibrahim Ferrer, vocals (Born Santiago de Cuba, Cuba 1927, died 2005) Born at a social club dance, Ibrahim Ferrer always believed it was his destiny to be a singer. Yet although he was the lead vocalist for bandleader Pacho Alonso in the 1950s, sang for the legendary Beny Moré and was lead singer with Los Bocucos, for much of his life his career was a story of disappointment. As a master vocalist in both son and bolero styles, he deserved to have been far better recognised than he was. At the time of the Buena Vista sessions, he was living in retirement, augmenting his pension by shining shoes. Invited to the Buena Vista sessions by Juan de Marcos González when a bolero singer was needed, he swiftly became a pivotal figure in the project.
