RELATIONSHIP CHART How to use this chart to determine the relationship between any two people in a family. 1. Identify the Common Ancestor of the two people. Locate the box in the upper left corner for the Common Ancestor. 2. Across the top row of the chart, find the relationship of one of the two people to their Common Ancestor. 3. Down the left column of the chart, find the relationship of the second person to their Common Ancestor. 4. Read down the column of the first person and across the chart on the row of the second person. Where the two intersect is the box which identifies their relationship. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Great G-G 3G 4G 5G 6G 7G COMMON Son/ Grand- Grand- Grand- Grand- Grand- Grand- Grand- Grand- ANCESTOR Daughter Child Child Child Child Child Child Child Child Grand Great Grand G-G Grand 3G Grand 4G Grand- 5G Grand- 6G Grand- Son/ Brother/ Nephew/ Nephew/ Nephew/ Nephew/ Nephew/ Nephew/ Nephew/ Nephew/ 1 Daughter Sister Niece Niece Niece Niece Niece Niece Niece Niece First Cousin First Cousin First Cousin First Cousin First Cousin First Cousin First Cousin Grand- Nephew/ Cousin Once Twice 3X 4X 5X 6X 7X 2 Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Grand First Cousin 2nd Cousin 2nd Cousin 2nd Cousin 2nd Cousin 2nd Cousin 2nd Cousin Great Grand- 2nd Nephew/ Once Once Twice 3X 4X 5X 6X 3 Child Cousin Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed G-G Great Grand- First Cousin 2nd Cousin 3rd Cousin 3rd Cousin 3rd Cousin 3rd Cousin 3rd Cousin 3rd Grand- Nephew/ Twice Once Once Twice 3X 4X 5X 4 Cousin Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed 3G G-G Grand First Cousin 2nd Cousin 3rd Cousin 4th Cousin 4th Cousin 4th Cousin 4th Cousin 4th Grand- Nephew/ 3X Twice Once Once Twice 3X 4X 5 Cousin Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed 4G 3G Grand First Cousin 2nd Cousin 3rd Cousin 4th Cousin 5th Cousin 5th Cousin 5th Cousin 5th Grand- Nephew/ 4X 3X Twice Once Once Twice 3X 6 Cousin Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed 5G 4G Grand- First Cousin 2nd Cousin 3rd Cousin 4th Cousin 5th Cousin 6th Cousin 6th Cousin 6th Grand- Nephew/ 5X 4X 3X Twice Once Once Twice 7 Cousin Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed 6G 5G Grand- First Cousin 2nd Cousin 3rd Cousin 4th Cousin 5th Cousin 6th Cousin 7th Cousin 7th Grand- Nephew/ 6X 5X 4X 3X Twice Once Once 8 Cousin Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed 7G 6G Grand- First Cousin 2nd Cousin 3rd Cousin 4th Cousin 5th Cousin 6th Cousin 7th Cousin 8th Grand- Nephew/ 7X 6X 5X 4X 3X Twice Once 9 Cousin Child Niece Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed Removed G-G = Great-Great 3G = Third Great 4G = Fourth Great… 3X = Three Times 4X = Four Times… Removed = Generations Removed. © 2011 Berks County Genealogical Society – www.berksgenes.org .
