Will Rogers Memorial Center opened in 1936. The prettiest color on a horse is fat. history Lesson “ —Ted Tillman, New Mexico cowman ” Horse events are commonplace at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Many participants probably get so wrapped up in the events that they don’t appreciate the history sur- rounding them. Native Texan and Fort Worth Star-Telegram founder Amon Carter and humorist Will Rogers Junior Jitters were good friends. After Rogers died in a plane crash in 1935, Carter encouraged Fort Worth leaders to construct a Will Rogers Memorial Museum. The city of Fort Worth built Will Rogers Memorial Center and dedicated it to Rogers’ memory as part of the Texas Centennial celebra- tion in 1936. in 1987, the newly expanded equestrian Center opened. The $16 million facility includes three arenas, a sale facility, meeting rooms, offices and exhibit space. it’s all located less than a mile north of interstate 30 and just blocks from downtown Fort Worth. The center also is adjacent to the city’s museum district, which includes the Amon Carter Museum; its establishment was stipulated by Carter’s will when he died in 1955. Among its exhibits is Carter’s collection of Western art and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. —SM
