New World mockingbirdsand thrashershave usually been placed near the thrushesand/or wrens. DNA-DNA hybridization data indi- cated that starlingsand mockingbirdsare more closelyrelated to each other than either is to any other living taxon. Some avian systematistsdoubted this conclusion.Therefore, a more extensiveDNA hybridizationstudy was conducted,and a successfulsearch was made for other evidence of the relationshipbetween starlingsand mockingbirds.The resultssup- port our original conclusionthat the two groupsdiverged from a commonancestor in the late Oligoceneor early Miocene, about 23-28 million yearsago, and that their relationship may be expressedin our passerineclassification, based on DNA comparisons,by placing them as sistertribes in the Family Sturnidae,Superfamily Turdoidea, Parvorder Muscicapae, Suborder Passeres.Their next nearest relatives are the members of the Turdidae, including the typical thrushes,erithacine chats,and muscicapineflycatchers. Corresponding au- thor: [email protected] ABSTRACT.—We report an observation of an orb- weaving spider (Argiope savignyi; Araneidae) cap- turing and feeding on a proboscis bat (Rhynchonyc- teris naso; Emballonuridae) at the La Selva Biological Station in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica. This observation and others suggest that spiders prey upon small bats more frequently than has been noted previously, and that invertebrates should now be considered as regular predators on small bats. KEYWORDS.—Argiope, Chiroptera, Costa Rica, preda- tion, Rhynchonycteris, sac-winged bat Bats are preyed upon by a wide range of vertebrate predators but there are few re- cords of invertebrate predators. Gillette and Kimbrough (1970) listed five inverte- brate groups as potential predators— American cockroaches (Pariplaneta america- nus), Australian cockroaches (Pariplaneta australis), driver ants, scorpions, and large spiders. Molinari et al. (2005) documented predation on three species of bats by giant centipedes (Scolopendra gigantea) in a Ven- ms. received Aug. 29, 2006; accepted April 23, 2007 NOTES 283 ezuelan cave; the centipedes killed and consumed adult bats that were captured while they roosted on the ceiling of the cave. -

Schulenberg Based on features including boot colour and tail shape, Booted Racket-tail Ocreatus underwoodii may be as many as four species. 1 ‘Anna’s Racket- tail’ O. (u.) annae, male, Cock-of-the-rock Lodge, 30 Neotropical Birding 22 Cuzco, Peru, August 2017 (Bradley Hacker). This series focuses on recent taxonomic proposals – descriptions of new taxa, splits, lumps or reorganisations – that are likely to be of greatest interest to birders. This latest instalment includes: new species of sabrewing, parrot (maybe), tapaculo, and yellow finch (perhaps); proposed splits in Booted Racket-tail, Russet Antshrike, White-backed Fire-eye (split city!), Collared Crescentchest, Olive-backed Foliage-gleaner, Musician Wren, Spotted Nightingale-Thrush, Yellowish and Short-billed Pipits, Black-and- rufous Warbling Finch, Pectoral and Saffron-billed Sparrows, and Unicolored Blackbird; a reassessment of an earlier proposed split in Black-billed Thrush; the (gasp!) possibility of the lump of South Georgia Pipit; and re- evaluations of two birds each known only from a single specimen. Racking up the racket-tails Venezuela to Bolivia; across its range, the puffy ‘boots’ (leg feathering) may be white or buffy, Booted Racket-tail Ocreatus underwoodii is one and the racket-tipped outer tail feathers may be of the most widespread, and one of the fanciest, straight, or so curved that the outermost rectrices hummingbirds of the Andes. Cotinga31-090608:Cotinga 6/8/2009 2:38 PM Page 23 Cotinga 31 Pousada Rio Roosevelt: a provisional avifaunal inventory in south- western Amazonian Brazil, with information on life history, new distributional data and comments on taxonomy Andrew Whittaker Received 26 November 2007; final revision accepted 16 July 2008 first published online 4 March 2009 Cotinga 31 (2009): 23–46 Apresento uma lista preliminar de aves da Pousada Rio Roosevelt situada ao sul do rio Amazonas e leste do rio Madeira, do qual o Rio Roosevelt é um dos maiores afluentes da margem direta. A localização geográfica do pousada aumenta a importância da publicação de uma lista preliminar da avifauna, uma vez que ela se situa no interflúvio Madeira / Tapajós dentro do centro de endemismo Rondônia. Recentes descobertas ornitológicas neste centro de endemismo incluem a choca-de- garganta-preta Clytoctantes atrogularis, que foi encontrada na pousada e é considerada uma espécie globalmente ameaçada. Discuto porque a realização de levantamentos de aves na Amazônia é tão difícil, mencionando sucintamente alguns avanços ornitólogos Neotropicais principalmente com relação ao conhecimento das vocalizações das espécies. Os resultados obtidos confirmaram que o rio Roosevelt é uma importante barreira biográfica para algumas de Thamnophildae, família representada por 50 espécies na Pousada Roosevelt, localidade com a maior diversidade de espécies desta família em todo o mundo. Ao todo, um total de 481 espécies de aves foi registrado durante 51 dias no campo, indicando que estudos adicionais poderão elevar esse número para além de 550 espécies. Para cada espécie registrada são fornecidos detalhes sobre sua abundância, migração, preferências de hábitat e tipo de documentação na área. -

This was the central question of this study, which aimed at 29 estimating the minimum cutting cycle for native woody species from an area covered by a 30 sustainable forest management plan. Individuals (n = 240) of twelve species native to the 31 semi-arid region were measured and wood discs were taken from them to collect data relative 32 to: i) volume, by an industrial 3D scanner; ii) density, using a high-frequency densitometer; 33 iii) age, by a growth ring measuring device; and iv) the lower heating value, by an oxygen 34 bomb calorimeter and an elemental analyzer. -
