In "Cantico del Sole" he said: "The thought of what America would be like/ If the Classics had a wide circulation/ Troubles me in my sleep" (Personae 183). He came to write an 815 page poem called The Cantos in which he presents "fragments" drawn from the literature and documents of the past in an attempt to build a new world, "a paradiso terreste" (The Cantos 802). This may be seen as either a noble gesture or sheer egotism. Pound once called The Cantos the "tale of the tribe" (Guide to Kulchur 194), and I believe this is so, particularly if one associates this statement with Allen Ginsberg's concerning The Cantos as a model of a mind, "like all our minds" (Ginsberg 14-16).

Schade Gerson, The Son of Homer – Ezra Pound’s Odyssey (Syn Homera – ‘Odyseja’ Ezry Pounda). Ezra Pound was obsessed with Ulysses. He identified with him throughout his Cantos, a work Pound opens by stealthily reworking a passage from an obscure 16th-century Latin translation of Homer’s Odyssey. The son of Homer Pound, Ezra led a Ulyssean life in various senses – leaving his home country only to return after his adventures, simulating madness, telling lies. He shares the lying and the way of life with his contemporary Lawrence of Arabia. Both translated the Odyssey and both, like Ulysses, lost all their friends (or alienated nearly everyone).     HOMER AND SLOVENE CULTURE 1. The beginnings of Homer’s influence upon Slovene artistic creativity are veiled in the mists of illiteracy, spun in A net of invisible, scarcely discernible threads, which are not likely ever to be disentangled or definitely identified. These traces can be felt in many Slovene folK songs where we notice ex­ pressions, thoughts and images which are at times surprisingly similar to the Homeric ones. So for instance in A folk song St. Scholastica, who is in mortal danger froM the Turks, is suddenly covered with A thick mist and hosts of angels who come to deliver her from her enemies.1 This reminds us of Ho­ meric scenes in which Apollo saves his protégé Hector by wrapping him in A thick haze, or of Poseidon saving Aeneas in A similar way. The folK wisdom which runs in Slovene proverbs, shows similar traits to the Homeric sayings.2 Moreover, we come across real Homeric motifs in Slovene folK tradition, in most cases, of course, in A Christianized version, e.g. the motif of Polyphe­ mus,3 Psychostasis,4 Gigantomachy.5 1. Latinità in Croazia Mentre con la dissoluzione dell’Impero Romano d’Occidente dal latino parlato si sviluppano lingue romanze, nessuno di questi due processi paralleli riesce in realtà a spodestare il latino nella sua funzione di lingua di cultura.1 I classici costituirono pur sempre la base di istruzione nell’Europa medievale, e l’umanesimo rafforzò ulteriormente l’interesse per l’antichità e il desiderio di ritornare alle radici classiche. Era sottinteso che una persona di cultura imparasse il latino, lingua della Chiesa e della diplomazia da una parte, delle scienze e delle lettere dall’altra. Nel territorio dell’odierna Croazia, il latino era presente sin dall’epoca della fondazione di colonie romane sulla sponda orientale dell’Adriatico.2 Da esso germogliarono poi il dalmatico, il raguseo e il veglioto, lingue neolatine prive di produzione scritta e usate solo come mezzo di comunicazione nella vita di tutti i giorni, in un territorio piuttosto ristretto. Il latino però, nella sua variante medievale, rimase la lingua delle iscrizioni, dei documenti ufficiali (privilegi, proclami, contratti, donazioni, statuti comunali) e delle cronache (ad es. di Obsidio Iadrensis e Historia Salonitana). Diplomirao je 1975. te doktorirao 1981. na Filozofskom fakultetu u Zagrebu, gdje je od 1990. redoviti profesor, a od 1992. predstojnik Katedre za latinski jezik i književnost. Bavi se antičkom književnom teorijom, retorikom, učenjima o stilu, antičkim romanom (osobito grčkim) te grotesknom komikom u antičkim tekstovima. U Londonu otkrio Marulićev Životopis sv. Jeronima (Vita diui Hieronymi), a u Glasgowu kodeks s nepoznatim Marulićevim latinskim pjesmama (Epigrammata) te priredio njihova prva izdanja. Sudjelovao na brojnim znanstvenim skupovima u Hrvatskoj i inozemstvu (Rim, Udine, Assisi, Ferrara, Chianciano, Bonn i dr.). Suosnivač je časopisa "Latina et Graeca" (1973-), istoimene biblioteke dvojezičnih izdanja (1979-) i istoimenoga Instituta za klasične jezike i antičku civilizaciju (2006-). Urednik je zbirke Grčki i rimski klasici Matice hrvatske (1998-), urednik Građe za povijest hrvatskoga latinizma (2005-), član uredništva Sabranih djela Marka Marulića (2005-); bio je urednik za hrvatski latinizam i klasične književnosti u Hrvatskoj općoj enciklopediji (1999-2009).

My title begins with a citation from Dante, quoted in the call for papers for this Homerizon conference. The citation comes from Inferno 4.86 – 88: “Mira colui con quella spada in mano, / che vien dinanzi ai tre sì come sire; / quelli è Omero poeta sovrano” (Note him there with sword in hand who comes before the other three as their lord. He is Homer, sovereign poet). Homer is the first of “quattro grand’ ombre” (four great shades, 83), followed by “Orazio 3 satiro,” “Ovidio,” and “Lucano” (89 – 90). Horace and Homer merit an adjective, Ovid and Lucan do not; Virgil is present in this scene, and as Dante’s guide speaks the lines 86 – 93, so 4 most of what I’ve quoted. In this list, Homer stands out for four reasons: first, he heads this list, which although chronological also has qualitative implications—Homer is the “first” poet in the full polysemy of the term—and leads the other three as “sire” (lord); second, Homer is remarkable for his sovereignty (to follow Singleton’s translation); third, Homer is the only Greek 1 This paper is itself a re-writing of an earlier conference paper.     The Homeric Versio Latina ROBIN SOWERBY This study examines the versio Latina of Homer's Iliad, first made in the 1360s, from its initial printing in 1537 through all its subsequent revisions up to the end of the seventeenth century.' All complete Graeco-Latin editions of the Iliad available in British libraries have been examined. A stemma listing these editions and indicating the editor or reviser of the versio in each case can be found below (page 189). After its initial printing, the versio was revised eight times in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Conclusions about the process of revision are drawn from a collation of the first book of the Iliad; a sample comprising the first sixteen lines of the versio in its various revisions is also given in an appendix. Many of the examples in the discussion that follows are taken from this sample; the rest are drawn from various parts of Book 1. While the focus is on the Iliad, a historian of the versio Latina cannot ignore the Odyssey, to which frequent reference is made in the early stages of this study. However, no systematic collation of the versio in the Odyssey lies behind anything said of it here. Conclusions drawn from a collation of only one book of the Iliad may be thought to have only a limited validity. There is no reason to suppose that editors were consistent in their practice throughout twenty-four books. On the one hand is the tendency on the part of a less than diligent editor not to sustain the effort put in at the beginning, on the other is the capacity of the diligent and conscientious to improve with practice in performance of the task.

THE HOMERIC HYMNS AND GEORGE CHAPMAN’S TRANSLATION Stephen Scully George Chapman’s Renaissance translation of the Homeric Hymns is its first rendering into English. Chapman’s efforts stride with robust Shakespearean vigor and are a source of delight even for modern readers, both as poems in our tongue and as lovely stories of the Greek gods. The Hymns are a col­ lection of thirty-three poems celebrating the gods and god­ desses of the Greek Pantheon from Mother Earth, the Sun, and Moon to Zeus, his children, and his children’s children. Though gathered under Homer’s name, they are anonymous compositions, varying in length and excellence, the best hav­ ing the concentration and splendor of Homer’s own achieve­ ments. Like all Greek narrative poems, they are composed to entertain and enthrall even as they also reveal and honor a deity’s deeds and powers. The many modern translations of these hymns testify to the pleasure they continue to bring both to students of Greek literature and to the general reader. The Hymns, like the poems of Homer and Hesiod, are epea: epic songs in dactylic hexameter in an artificial poetic dialect. The hybrid collection, consisting of five long poems followed by twenty-nine short ones, vary in length from six hundred lines to just three.
