PROFILE

William Barbee is an architect, educator and founder of Barbee Architects, Inc., a multi-disciplinary design firm locat- ed in Austin, Texas and established in 1983. The work of the firm reflects his interests in the areas of architecture, interior architecture, and historic preservation. All work is grounded in the fundamental lessons of historic architec- ture and design: craftsmanship, human and minimalist spirit, technology, environment. The firm has received ac- knowledgement of the quality of its design through numerous awards and publications. Clients with whom we collab- orate have honored us with repeat commissions including: Wells Fargo Bank Texas, NA, LBJ Holding Company, Westwood Country Club, Gracy Title, Keller Williams, AISD.

William Barbee graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Natural Sciences in 1973 and a Master of Arts in Biomedical Science from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1975. He entered the New York School of Interior Design where he studied under Giuseppe Zambonini, Michael Kalil and George Ranalli. He received a Masters of Architecture from the Graduate School Of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 with a specialty in historic preservation and adaptive use. He studied under Professors Walter Eugene George, Drury Blakely Alexander, Lance Tatum, Wayne Bell, and R. James Coote.

William Barbee’s academic career includes a Visiting Assistant Professorship in the Department of Architecture at Texas A & M University, Lecturer in The Department of Interior Design at The University of Texas at Austin and at San Antonio, and Assistant Professor in Graduate Studies at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Courses taught were in the areas of architectural design, interior design and historic preservation.

William Barbee has conducted independent studies in the documentation of historic structures including the Puebli- tos of Dinetah in New Mexico and the Southern Chacoan Outliers at Chaco Canyon, NM. His studio won the covet- ed Charles E. Peterson Prize in 1999 from the Historic American Buildings Survey for the documentation of the Maverick-Carter Residence in San Antonio. He received the 1999 Kenneth L. Anderson Prize from the National Park Service.

Documentation of the Maverick Carter House San Antonio, Texas Architect / Faculty / Project Manager Recordation of the Maverick Carter House by Alfred Giles for the Historic American Buildings Survey. Undertaken as a course in recordation of historic structures for the University of Texas at San Antonio’s School of Architecture & Interior Design. This project which advanced the recordation by CADD procedures won the 1999 Peterson Prize from the National Park Service. William Barbee also received the Kenneth L. Anderson Prize. 1998-1999
