The aim of the study was to determine the diversity of arthropods and decreased seed weight in the three cocoa cultivation systems. The sampling of arthropods used pitfall traps, light trap, and Yellow Fan Trap. The found 2684 arthropod individuals represented 12 orders, 47 families and 106 species. Diversity index and abundance index were the highest for cocoa crop ecosystem A2 (2.9 and 13.1). The largest decrease in weight of cocoa seeds was found in the A1 locations (8.34%) and the lowest in the A3 locations (3.61%). We recommend that cocoa cultivation should use protective trees. Suarez ABSTRACT The following thesis comprises three parts: (1) the description of a new fossil assassin bug, (2) the use of this newly described taxon to inform the phylogenetic history of the family, and (3) a survey of previously-described extinct taxa compiled into the first taxonomic catalog of fossil Reduvioidea. The first chapter presents a new Eocene (Ypresian) fossil assassin bug, Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), described from the Green River Formation of Colorado. The specimens informing this description are marked by an extraordinary level of preservation, particularly in external and internal structures of the adult male genitalia. Following the description, discussions of phylogenetic signal and the implications for the systematics and evolutionary history of the group are presented. The second chapter uses Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. as a new calibration point in order to re-estimate the divergence dates of Reduvioidea. This analysis also utilizes a new set of fossil calibrations from previous studies. Tree topology is inferred using MrBayes and RAxML, and divergence dates are inferred using BEAST2. -

Existen regiones del país donde la riqueza entomológica ha sido poco estudiada, como el noreste del estado de Guanajuato, reconocida como una de las áreas de mayor conservación del estado. Razón por la que se analizó la diversidad de heterópteros presentes en bosque de pino-encino y matorral submontano en Victoria, Guanajuato dentro de la RBSGG. El trabajo se efectuó de marzo a septiembre del 2019. Se colectaron 343 heterópteros, pertene- cientes a 11 familias, 30 géneros y 35 especies. La familia Coreidae y Reduviidae fueron las más diversas con ocho especies, seguido de Pentatomidae con seis especies. Los estimadores no paramétricos Chao2 y Jacknife 1 indicaron la completitud del inventario del 95 % y 84 % para ambos tipos de vegetación. En el matorral submontano la diversidad H' fue de 2.5, en comparación el bosque de pino-encino con valor H' de 1.9. -

Ectrichodiinae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), the millipede assassin bugs, are a speciose group (>660 species) of assassin bugs that appear to be specialist predators on Diplopoda, or millipedes. Apparently capable of coping with the noxious defensive com- pounds produced by many millipedes, Ectrichodiinae are engaged in a predator-prey relationship with millipedes realized only by few other arthropods. Unfortunately, feeding behaviors of Ectrichodiinae are inadequately documented, rendering this exciting phe- nomenon largely inaccessible. We here present a literature review on ectrichodiine prey selection and feeding behaviors, with sup- plemental original observations on Rhiginia cinctiventris (Stål, 1872) in Costa Rica. Thirteen species in 12 genera have been observed to feed on millipedes. The majority of diplopod prey species were reported from the orders Spirostreptida and Spirobolida, whereas Polydesmida are rarely attacked. Ectrichodiinae insert their stylets at the millipede’s intersegmental membranes on the ven- tral and ventro-lateral trunk area or between the head and collum. Communal predation was observed among conspecific nymphs, among groups of nymphs with a conspecific adult, and more rarely among adults. Immature ectrichodiines were rarely observed to engage in solitary predation. -

University of Florida Entomology and Nematolgy Insect Classification ENY 4161/6166 Fall 2002 Sean Bierle, Esther Dunn, Sasha Frederick, Sandy Garrett, Justin Harbison, David Hoel, Ben Ley, Scott Weihman A Literature-based Key to REDUVIIDAE (Heteroptera) of Florida (Assassin Bugs, and Thread-Legged Bugs [This manuscript is the result of research by the above listed students. It is intended to provide dichotomous keys to species of Reduviidae listed as occurring in Florida. Records are based on literature only. Figures are mostly from Blatchley's Heteroptera of Eastern North America.] This is a large group (more than 160 North American species) of predaceous bugs, and many species are fairly common. They are often blackish of brownish in color, but many are brightly colored. The head is usually elongate with the part behind the eyes neck like. The beak is short and three-segmented, and its tip fits into a stridulatory groove in the prosternum. The abdomen in many species is widened in the middle, exposing the lateral margins of the segments beyond the wings. Most species are predaceous on other insects, but a few are bloodsucking and frequently bite people. Many species will inflict a painful bite if carelessly handled. One of the largest and most easily recognized assassin bugs is the wheel bug, Arilus cristatus (L.), a grayish bug 28-36 mm in length, with a semicircular crest on the pronotum that terminates in teeth and resembles a cogwheel. This species is fairly common in the East. The Masked hunter, Reduvius personatus (L.) is a brownish black bug 17-22 mm in length that is often found in houses.
